8.3 Surface Preparation and Protective Coating Requirements

The surface preparation and coating systems nominated on the drawings are in relation to GT standard Surface
Protection Specification for Jameson Cells ESD-GT-SP0001. Final paint colours for equipment will be nominated on the
“Issued for Construction” version of the Project Specific “PJ” prefix drawings.

8.4 Rubber Lining Specification

Document ESD-GT-SP0021 is the “Glencore Technology Technical Specification for Rubber Lining” referred to in the
drawings. Section 8.4.1 below is to be read in conjunction with this technical specification. Rubber thicknesses and
hardness requirements are nominated on the drawings.
All rubber lined surfaces shall be protected from degradation by sunlight, ozone and oxidation by the use of a
preservative system recommended in the lining manufacturer’s written instructions and approved by GT.
At all stages of fabrication, the rubber lining on the equipment must be shielded from exposure to sunlight.

8.4.1 Preparation of acute and difficult access internal angles.

All rubber lining is to conform to the requirements of BS6374 Part 5 as per current scope of work.
As per BS6374:Part 5:1985 – section 2.3.8, all internal corners are to have a minimum radius of 2 times the rubber
thickness. This can be achieved by using one of the following methods:
 Weld up the corner and grind out the required radius
 Build up the corner with a steel putty (Devcon) and shape to the required radius prior to blasting.
 Using a rubber v-fillet (either extruded or cut) to create the required radius
 Any alternative method proposed by the fabricator/rubber lining applicator that is approved by GT.
Note that any method other than applying the rubber lining to a metal substrate will need additional quality checks,
i.e. putty adhesion tests (both to the substrate and the rubber), pull tests using the steel putty or rubber strips as the
base, etc. These will be clarified in the ITP for the project and will need to be performed prior fabrication being
completed and rubber lining started, adequate time must be allowed to permit change of method and including re-
test and approval should initial tests fail.
The fabricator, in conjunction with the rubber lining applicator, is to select the internal corner lining method required
for the fabrication, considering all safety, practical and financial impacts of the different methods. Details of the selected
internal corner lining method must be submitted in the fabricator’s quote to GT.

8.5 Removal of Sharp Edges & Cleaning of Welds to be Coated or Lined

There exists a high probability of the creation of a coating discontinuity when applying protective coating films - such as
paints, or linings – such as rubber or polyurethane, over sharp edges in general and pinholes and slag inclusions in
welded joints. This type of coating discontinuity may lead to premature failure of the coating and cause corrosion,
which will then be the subject of a defect liability claim against the Supplier.

For the purposes of providing a suitable substrate on which to apply protective coatings, the Supplier shall exercise care
to remove all weld scale, slag, splatter, burns and any other sharp or rough projection during fabrication. This may
require weld reinforcements inside lined tanks or pipes to be suitably rounded and / or ground flush.
In these areas the weld preparation levels will be over and above the requirements the AS1554 or AWS D1.1 Structural
Steel Welding Code. The Supplier shall make an allowance in the contract sum for the cleaning of welded joints and
adjacent areas to achieve a sound protective coating film or lining.

8.6 Factory Trial Assembly

The purpose of Trial Assembly is to ensure all items, whether they are provided by the Supplier or Free Issue, fit together
to a standard which ensures the proper trouble free installation and operation of the Jameson Cell.
The Supplier is required to provide the necessary manpower, equipment and consumables required to conduct the trial
assemblies listed in this section. This includes the receipt, temporary storage, unpacking and re-packing of the “Free
Issue” equipment supplied by the Purchaser.
The Trial Assembly shall have two witness points. One witness point is for the Purchaser followed by a separate witness
point for the End User. The Supplier shall allocate at least 1 working day for each of the above witness points in the
Contract Program.
With the exception of galvanised coatings over steel, the Trial Assembly is completed prior to the application of external
surface protective coatings (e.g. paint). Following successful completion of the trial assembly, the equipment can then
be disassembled and final protective coatings applied. All free-issued items are to be re-packaged into original
packaging.
GT will provide in detail to the fabricator at the stage of award the contract.

8.7 Application of Logos

The Supplier is required to engage the services of a suitably experienced external signage contractor, with the
appropriate manpower, tools and consumables for the supply and application of logos. The logos must be applied in the
same orientation and locations as shown on the referenced Assembly drawing. The area of application must be cleaned
of all dust and residue prior to application and after application the surface of the logos must be free of bubbles, creases
and folds.

8.8 PLATFORMS, WALKWAYS AND STAIRS

will be given to the use of FRP floor grating.
Grating shall be fixed to supports with standard Webforge clipsets with C302MG fastener (M8 x 50 long screw) at
recommended centres, or by welding as directed by The Engineer. A minimum of 4 fixings per panel shall be used.
Grating shown on the design drawings as removable panels shall be fixed using double saddle clamps at the
recommended spacings. Where grating is located in structures that are subject to vibration, the grating shall be fixed to
the supporting member by welding 25mm long 5mm fillet welds at 250mm centres.
All edges including the edges of holes and openings in grating shall be banded prior to surface treatment, except where
panel edges are supported on angles with vertical legs upward or on the inside lower flange of channel or UB or UC
sections.
130 mm x 6 mm kick plate shall be welded to the grating at locations as shown on the drawings.
