PERSONAL

CULTURAL PROJECT

By Abigail Luna-Hernandez
• My family is from different
parts of Mexico. My mother FAMILY B ACKGROUND
was born in Guerrero, Mx in a
city called Chilpancingo and my
father was born in Hidalgo de
Parral, Chihuahua.
• I have visited Hidalgo de Parral
a few times and it was amazing
to see where my family grew up
in.
• The language I was raised with
was Spanish but learned English
as I got older. I am now more
fluent in English then I am in
Spanish
Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Hidalgo de Parral, Mx
• My family is big on spending
time together and we value are EVENTS AND TRADITIONS
traditions.
• Since I was younger, we have
hosted family game nights at
least once a month to make
sure we spend time together.
• We still play games that my
parents played when they were
younger like toma todo, loteria,
and la gallinita ciega.
• We put effort to keep these
games in the family and hope to
keep doing so.

• My family celebrates two
holidays more than all the HOLIDAYS
others.Which are Christmas
and Halloween>
• We do family matching pajamas
to get pictures for memories
that go 20 years back!
• On Halloween we do themed
costumes or do best costumes
contests.
• We make our favorite foods in
a Potluck style! We usually only
listen to Spanish music at
events and speak Spanish.
VISITING MEXICO

• I went to the ranch that my dad and his family grew up in

for two months. I went with my cousins and no parents, so
it made the trip a once in a lifetime experience.
• We saw the life that they lived and what they had to do
daily. It was so different than my life.
• We had to take care of cows and moves them miles by
horse to get them to a water source.
• The food was mostly vegetables and the occasional meet.
We always had free eggs for breakfast and milk straight
from the cow.
EDU C ATION

• My educational career started a bit rough

because I struggled to speak English. I didn’t
have the best grades or motivation.
• I started to push myself and by my 8th grade I
managed to get into higher level classes, even
skipped a grade of math.
• In high school, I maintained this and knew that I
wanted to be a teacher to help with motivation
and success.
INTEREST

• I love to travel and explore new cultures, foods, music, and

scenes. I have been to many cities in California, Utah,
Mexico, and Arizona. I would love to travel farther and
outside the US which I'm hoping to do after I graduate.
• I also like to take pictures of land and pretty scenes that I
come by. The pictures to the right are in San Diego and
Utah. I haven’t had the chance to focus more on my picture
taking skills but plan to do so more in my free time.
• I also like to paint but haven’t had picture taken of my
work. Its more for fun than for the view because I’ll admit
that I'm not the best! haha
RELIGION

• I am Catholic but I follow the beliefs that I think are

right and alter to fit my life. I am not at all a strict
catholic, but I value the traditions that come with it.
• I had my baptism, first communion, and second
communion. I attend these with a few other cousins
and celebrated with a dinner after.
• I like to believe that everyone has a good heart and
there are reasons we go through hardship, It makes
us stronger people and brings unity.
PREJUDICE AND BIASES

I would say that I personally try my best to be fair and open minded to all
people I meet.
I feel like if I had any bias, it would be that I would want to focus on minority
groups because I can understand the struggles minorities face. I would like to
offer the most I can to grow opportunities for minorities but also want to be fair
to all students. I plan to do my best to make sure all my future students feel
included
As for my family biases, I think they are similar to my own. Most of my family is
already older and I think they have done great to adapt from their accustomed
views.
Short term goals:
I will get my substitute license within the next year and
begin working.
I want to move into my own apartment by the end of
this year.
Long term goals:
I want to get my bachelors degree in about 2-3 years.
My goal is to start thinking about a house after
S HORT/L ONG graduation and working for a few months.
TERM G OAL S
I would also like to further my education to a master's
degree

Dig in deeper:
When I become a teacher, my goal is to become a safe
place/person that my students can be comfortable around while
learning. I hope to teacher life skills and knowledge beyond the
books and help students to the best of my abilities.
MY CULTURAL ARTIFACTS

• There has been a white dress that has been passed down
to all the girls in the family and has been modified many
times. I wore the dress for my communion and my kids will
for their events. I hold this dress very close to my heart
because of the history it holds.
• One experience that really shaped me was when I was
walking home from school and saw a little bird on the floor
next to a tree being cut down. I looked for a nest but
couldn’t find anything, so I took the bird home. I took care
of it for a few weeks then found a bird rescue that took
the bird in. This taught me about hope and the good that
can come even for a little bird that had nothing left,
CULTURAL ARTIFACTS

• If you ask me what shaped me to be the person I am

today, I would have a simple answer: My family.
• My family have struggled with me when we had little
money to survive on, they stood with me when I
was struggling In school and were there to cheer me
on when I achieved my goals. They are my biggest
supporters and help me with every step I take. They
are what I think about when I make decisions and
they shaped my views on helping others.
• Together, we make new traditions and continue to
break old stigmas that surround us.
• They made me and we shape our culture.
