HYDRAULICS & HYDRAULIC MACHINERY
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
PART – A
(Compulsory Question)
*****
1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) Distinguish between prismatic and non-prismatic channel.
(b) The alternate depths at a section in a rectangular channel are 0.4 m and 1.6 m respectively. What is
the specific energy at the section?
(c) Define back water curve and length of the back water.
(d) The sequent depth ratio of a hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel is 16.48. Estimate the Froude
number at the beginning of the jump.
(e) State the equation for force exerted by fluid jet on stationery flat plate.
(f) Classify turbines based on its specific speed.
(g) State any two advantages of draft tube.
(h) Suggest suitable centrifugal pump for the conditions given below:
(i) To pump water to overhand tank of a high rise building.
(ii) To drain water of temple tank.
(i) Enumerate any two advantages in distorted model studies.
(j) Define laminar sublayer.

PART – B
(Answer all five units, 5 X 10 = 50 Marks)
UNIT – I
2 The area of cross-section of a trapezoidal channel is 30 m2. Find the base width and flow depth for
most economical design if the slope of the bed is 1 in 1500. Side slope is 1V:2H.
OR
3 A rectangular channel 1.5 m wide carries a discharge of 9.0 m3/s at a depth of 2.0 m. Calculate the
specific energy and depth alternate to the given depth of 2.0 m.
UNIT – II
4 Discuss classification of surface profiles.
OR
5 A rectangular channel of 5 m width discharges water at the rate of 1.5 m3/s into a 5 m wide apron
with 1/3000 slope at a velocity of 5 m/s. Determine the height of the hydraulic jump and energy loss.
UNIT – III
6 Prove that the efficiency of a free jet striking normally as series of flat plates mounted on the
periphery of a wheel never exceeds 50%.
OR
7 Determine the specific speed for the data available at a location as given below:
Head available: 900 m.
Power estimated 40000 kW.
Speed required: 417.5 rpm.
Also indicate the suitable type of turbine.

UNIT – IV
8 A Francis turbine produces 6750 kW at 300 rpm under a net head of 45 m with an overall efficiency
of 85%. What would be the revolution per minute, discharge and brake power of the same turbine
under a net head of 60 m under homologous conditions?
OR
9 Draw a neat sketch of centrifugal pump and caption various components of it. Also explain its
working principle.
UNIT – V
10 The resistance force F of a ship is a function of its length L, velocity V, acceleration due to gravity g
and fluid properties like density ρ and viscosity µ. Write this relationship in a dimensionless form
using Buckingham-π method.
OR
11 With neat sketch, discuss: (i) The concept of the boundary layer with reference to fluid motion over
a flat plate. (ii) Phenomenon of separation for flow over curved surfaces.
