Interview Sample Selection Criteria

Employees from various workstations that meet certain criteria should be selected during the
walkthrough of the facility and from a random sampling of personnel records. The following are
guidelines to use as appropriated when selecting interview candidates:

 Select employees from different production lines and duties within the facility
 Select employees of different genders, ethnic or religious backgrounds
 Select employees that appear young
 Select pregnant women
 Select Union Representative when available

Employee participation in interviews is strictly voluntary and the employee’s discretion. It is imperative
that each auditor communicate the confidentially of the interview is conducted and that no reference to
the employee’s name will be used when findings are disclosed to management. Furthermore, all
documentation is destroyed away from facility location. All the interviews must be conducted in a
private area in a location that ensures separation from management influence. This document must be
destroyed immediately after the report has been completed and the auditor has left the facility. A list
with names of the employees interviewed should be recorded on a separate sheet and maintained in
the assessment folder.

Child labour
1. What is your date of birth? ( verify via ID / Records)
2. How old are you?
3. How long have you worked here?
4. Do children ever help or visit their parents here?
5. Do you know if there are restrictions placed on the type of work/tasks employees under 18 can
perform?

Force Labour
6. How did you find this job?
7. Did you have to pay anyone else to get it?(e.g. government official ,agent /broker)
8. Is the management withholding any of your salary wages?
9. Do you owe the company any money?(e.g. loans, moving expenses etc)
10. Does the management hold your passport or identification card? Has management ever held
these documents without your permission? With permission?
11. Are you required to pay for uniform, equipment or other materials necessary to perform your
job?
12. Did any member of your family receive money or another form of compensation from the
facility in order for you to work here?
13. Do you have a contract?
14. Can you end the contract anytime you want and leave? What happened if you did this?
15. Is overtime work optional to mandatory?
16. What happened if you decline to work overtime hours?
17. Do you live in the dormitories?
18. Are you allowed to live somewhere else if you want?
19. Are you free to use the toilets or get water when necessary?

Abuse of Labour
20. Do you understand the disciplinary rules and regulations of the facility?
21. What type of disciplinary practices does management employ?(verbal /written warnings,
required overtime, monetary deductions
22. Have you ever witnessed or been subjected to mental, physical or sexual abuse or received
threats?
23. Does management have procedures for reporting harassment or discrimination that workers
can use without penalty?

Freedom of Association/ Collective Bargaining


24. Does management promoted-or do they try to prevent-employees forming, belonging to or not
belongings to a union or any other type of worker’s organizations?
25. Does managmennt consider the union membership negatively as a condition of hire or
continued employment?
26. Does the management treat employees in general differently based on the employee’s union
affiliation or their specific union activities? If yes-how?
27. Are there union in the factory and if yes what are the names of the unions at the factory?
28. If yes to Question 27 are you a member of a union bargaining unit?
29. Is there any other committee such as safety or other committee organization or representation
in the facility?
30. If yes to Question 29 are you aware of recommendations that workers committee such as Health
and Safety have made to management? If yes, do you how management responded to the
recommendations that were made by the committee?
31. Have any strikes, walkout or related labour demonstrations taken place at your workplace in the
last two years? If yes do you know how were they resolved? If yes, were the police, military or
any other government or outside parties involved in the resolution?
32. If there is a union-Do union officers and union members operate and meet in the facility? Are
they allowed to operate and meet free from obstacles and unfair treatment by management as
long as they abide by the law and any applicable labour agreement and do not interfere with
other employees jobs?
33. Are workers provided with, or do they have access to a copy of the company’s collective
bargaining agreement in their primary language?
34. In non –union plants-Has management ever told workers what they think might happen to
production or employment if workers were to unionize?
35. Does the management have a procedure for filling grievances that workers can use without fear
of retaliation?
Working Hours
36. Are you paid by the hour, piece rate or salary?
37. Is there a time clock?
38. Do you punch your time card?
39. Do you have more than one time card?
40. Does your time card have all the time you worked including overtime hours and rework?
41. What are your regular hour days?
42. What are your regular start and stop times on these days?
43. How often and when do you usually need to work overtime?
44. Do you ever need to work in a single day, week and month?
45. Do you ever need to work 7 or more days without 1 rest day?
46. When is the peak season for working hours?
47. Is there a minimum amount of work you must complete in a regular workday?
48. Are you ever required to attend meetings outside of work hours without compensation?

Wages and Benefits


49. What is your regular (non-overtime) rate of pay?
50. Are you paid by check or cash for regular?
51. What is your overtime rate of pay?
52. When do you earn overtime compensation?
53. If you paid at piece rate, do you keep track of your pieces? Were piece rate payments correct?
54. Are you paid for rework?
55. About how much do you earn each pay period?
56. Are you wages ever paid late? If so, how often and how late?
57. Are you given something in writing each pay period (pay stub) which lists all your wages, and all
the deductions from your wages?
58. Are there any deductions taken from your check that you do not understand or that do not
appear on your pay stub?
59. Are you required to pay for any materials or supplies or are you ever charged for any items (e.g
scissors, uniforms, housing, meals, etc.)
60. What benefits do you receive from your employer?
61. Are you given rest and meal breaks?
62. How often are you given these breaks?
63. How long are your rest and meals breaks?

Health and Safety-Facility


64. Do you know which manager is in charge of safety and health issues /training programs?
65. Do you have access to clean (portable) water?
66. What type of training were you provided with at orientation?(e.g., personal protective
equipment safety ,job related ?)
67. Are safety committee meetings ever held? How often?
68. What types of injuries are common in this factory?
69. Does the management give you protective equipment (gloves, masks, protective eyewear, etc.)
to use at no cost (or upfront deposit or other) to you?
70. If yes does the management require you to use the personal protective equipment?
71. Do you feel the air circulation is adequate for working here?
72. What chemicals, glues, paints, fixers, dyes, etc. do you use?
73. Did you receive training in and have access to information about the safe use chemicals?
74. Do you know how to operate a fire exit gusher?
75. Have you ever participated in a fire / evacuation drill or fire safety training?
76. Are the emergency exits in the facility locked during the working hours?
77. If you suffered an injury while working. What would you do?

Health and Safety-Dormitory


78. Is the dormitory separated by gender?
79. Do you share a sleeping mat or bed with employees on another shift?
80. How is the ventilation?
81. Have you participated in a fire evacuation drill for the dormitory?
82. Are the doors to the housing ever locked from inside so no one can get in or out?

Discrimination
83. Have you ever been treated differently from other workers by your Employer because of your
race? Social or ethnic group? National origin? Gender? Pregnancy? Religion? Sexual Orientation?
Because of any disabilities?
84. If yes, please describe how and why?
85. Were you required to get a urine test before working here? Since working here?
86. Has your manager ever requested that you use contraception or take steps to avoid becoming
pregnant? What happens if you become pregnant?
87. Are pregnant women restricted to certain types of work ?(e.g., not allowed to work with
chemical, lift heavy objects)
88. Were you required to get medical exam or blood test before working here? Since working here?

Demonstration of Compliance
89. Do you ever take work home?
90. Do you know others workers that take work home?
91. If yes, how are workers paid for this work?
92. Are you required to pay for uniforms, equipment or any other job-related expense?
93. Did you know that I would be coming here today?
94. Did management help you prepare for the interview?
