Activity 2
In a remote town of Bohol stood a small public elementary school. Outside the school are local
food vendors selling different types of food that are affordable to the school children. One morning, the
recess bell rang and children eagerly ran just outside the school premises to buy some of their favorite
food items sold outside of the gates. This was about 9 in the morning. At 11 in the morning some school
children started vomiting and complained about a terrible stomachache. Immediately some of the
students began to be unconscious. At this moment, school officials asked helped from the local
government. These prompted local government officials to bring many of the elementary students to a
nearby hospital.
At about 2 pm more than 20 of the students had died. A national investigation had been made by
the government. The investigators found out that a local delicacy by an old lady is the cause of the fatal
food poisoning. According to investigation, many of the casualties bought a fried root crop sold by the
lady. Immediately they inspected the house of the lady. They found out the root crop is harvested behind
the house of the lady and that is not the cause of the illness. However, further test was made to the
suspected food item revealed a presence of a pesticide used to kill chicken lice. This is a white powdery
substance that could easily be mistaken as flour. At the house of the old lady, indeed, investigator found
out the pesticide.
Questions
1. In your own opinion, what do you think had caused the fatalities of the young children?
- Due to food poisoning, many young children had died who unknowingly ate a fried root crop, a
local delicacy sold by an old lady. A presence of a substance called pesticide was found on the food, this
means that it was used on making the food since it could easily be mistaken as flour.
2. If you are the parent or teacher of the children, how could you avoid the incident?
- As the parent or teacher of the children, I will teach them how to identify the food if it is cooked
properly or if it was made clean. To avoid them from getting food poisoned, I will tell them that if they
are unsure, have no knowledge about the food, or if it is new to them, they must first ask permission to
the adults whom they have known. If there is no one you can ask for, it would be safe if you will not buy
or eat the food to avoid fatal incidents.
3. Based on what you have learned from Chapter 3, how could you avoid such incident from happening?
- To forestall food contamination, make the accompanying strides while getting ready food:
Carefully clean up frequently, and consistently prior to cooking or cleaning. Continuously wash
them again in the wake of contacting crude meat.
Clean dishes and utensils that have had any contact with crude meat, poultry, fish, or eggs.
Do not put cooked meat or fish back onto the very plate or compartment that held the crude
meat, except if the holder has been totally washed.
Cook frozen food sources for the full time suggested on the bundle.
Do not utilize obsolete food sources, bundled food with a messed-up seal, or jars that are
protruding or have an imprint.
Do not utilize food sources that have an uncommon smell or a ruined taste.
Do not drink water from streams or wells that are not treated. Just beverage water that has been
dealt with or chlorinated.
