Lec-7 Bus Switching Schemes Double Main & Transfer (DMT) One and Half CB Schemes in English

This document summarizes two bus switching schemes: 1) Double Main & Transfer (DMT) scheme which has two main busbars and one transfer busbar for reliability. It allows maintenance to be done on circuit breakers without power interruption by transferring the feeder to the transfer busbar. 2) One and a half circuit breaker scheme which shares three circuit breakers between two elements. In this scheme, the CVT is installed after the line isolator, so if the isolator opens, the CVT voltage will not feed to the distance protection and it may not operate correctly. Some protections like stub protection may need to be disabled.

LEC-7: BUS SWITCHING SCHEMES || DOUBLE MAIN &

TRANSFER (DMT) || ONE AND HALF CB SCHEMES | IN

ENGLISH
Bus Switching Scheme:
Double Main & Transfer Scheme
One & Half CB Scheme
This concepts are required to understand STUB scheme.

DMT: Double Main & Transfer:

This scheme has two main busbar and one transfer busbar. This type of
configuration mainly used for better reliability.
Single Bus single CB Scheme:
Most simple busbar scheme.

This is an example of Single Bus Single CB scheme. The major disadvantage of this
scheme is if fault occurred then it will lose power supply to all feeder.
As this scheme has no isolator between CB & Busbar, the major disadvantage is
that it is not possible to do Maintenance work in the CB without shutting down
the Busbar.
To overcome this issue one isolator is used to isolate CB in case of Maintenance.
This Isolator is used in all scheme like: Single, Single with sectionalizer, Double
Main, Double Main with sectionalizer, Ring, One & Half, One & Half with
sectionalizer, One & Half with series reactance. In all the busbar scheme isolator
provided at both side of the circuit breaker.
This isolator is a no load switch.

CB needs to open first then the Isolators.

One Key issue that Isolators could be opened at Potential Difference at 0 condition.
The Bus coupler always in closed condition. The left side one is the connection to transfer bus.
In the above scheme we can operate 89A & 89B without operating the CB as both are in same
potential difference.
To operate the isolators in energize condition bus coupler is required in DMT scheme.
To do maintenance in the feeder circuit breaker without any outage, transfer bus system is
used.
For example, to do maintenance work in Feeder 2, let’s say that Feeder 2 is now connected
with Bus 1 by 89A. Then follow the steps:
1. Close 89B of feeder 2
2. Close 89B and 89C of Transfer Bus.
3. Close CB of Transfer Bus.
4. Now Transfer Bus is energized with Bus 2 power.
5. Now Close the 89C of Feeder 2 with Transfer bus. We can close it since there is no potential
difference.
6. Now Feeder 2 have power from Both Transfer Bus and Bus 2.
7. Open the CB of Feeder 2, now load current will flow through Transfer bus by 89C.
8. Open the Isolator 89B and downstream of CB to isolate the CB for Maintenance.

During the transfer bus operation the Line Isolator of feeder 89L will be remained in opened
condition.
However, during the whole operation the CVT & CT output will feed to protection relay.
In DMT scheme normally STUB protection is not required.
One & Half Breaker Scheme:
Two element will share 3 Circuit Breaker.

In one & half scheme the CVT is installed after 89L. And in case of 89L opened condition CVT
voltage will not feed to Distance Protection and in that case relay will not operate correctly. In
that condition some protection functions need to be disabled like STUB.
