After-Reading Questions:

1. What are the three parts of speech according to Corax?

 According to Corax, a basic speech has three parts, the introduction, evidence, and
conclusion, and this simple organization of speeches has endured throughout the ages.

2. What makes a speech persuasive? Explain these in your own words?

 It makes a speech persuasive when you are going to convince the audience to accept their
point of view. It is effective when the audience is willing to consider the speaker’s
argument.

3. What is Balagtasan? Does this tradition continue until now? Where?

 The balagtasan is a traditional Filipino art form where two protagonists debate the
merits of a theme, one supporting it and the other arguing against it. The
balagtasan is a verbal joust in verse. It is usually conducted in Tagalog or other
native dialects. In the rural Philippines where there were very limited forms of
entertainment, poetry contests preceded the balagtasan. This tradition continue until
now especially when Buwan ng wika wherein the Lakandiwa or Lakambini who
introduces the topic and the contestants, acts as referee in case the debate gets too heated,
and decides who wins or loses.

4. Whose good speaker have you heard? Why?

 Mrs. Cheryl Loresca, the Guidance Counsilor of Labas Senior High school. For me, she
is a good speaker because she knows how to get the attention of stubborn students. Every
time she will give her speech about mental health or whatsoever, we listen attentively.
She will speak in front of us confidently while having eye to eye contact with us and she
has this aura that makes us focus on what she’s saying. Also, she never had a speech
without us relating into it.

5. What are your thoughts and feelings about public speaking?

 In public speaking, needs courage or confidence to stand and speak in front of many
people. For me, public speaking is difficult when you are not prepared, and you don’t
know what the audience needs. And of course, when speaking in public you don’t need to
be intelligent, just need to know how to deal and talk others confidently in the future. To
be honest, I have a fear of public speaking because of stage freight and whenever I’m
speaking in front of many people I couldn’t speak clearly because I am afraid of what
other people say and I am anxious when speaking in public because it is not that easy and
I always assume that I am not a good speaker and I don’t have enough confidence.
