Foreign traveler
Detail of foreign travelers and writers coming to India also help us to understand the history of Indian history,
including many Greek, Roman, Arabs and Chinese travelers.
GREEK-ROMAN (Conventional Writer)
During the attack of Alexander the Great, a contemporary Indian king named Sandrochottus was named after
the Greek writer Strabo Justin. William Jonas identified as Chandragupta Mourya.
Arian and Plutarch referred to him as Endrochottus and Fillokas in the name of Sandrochottus.
The Greek scholar Strrabo, Daayodoras, Plinee and Arian is considered as a classical writer.
(i) Teceius
This was the Rajveidh of Iran. In relation to India, it is unbelievable only due to acquiring knowledge about Iranian
authorities and being full of surprising stories.
(ii) Herodotus
It is called the father of history. It has described the relationship between India and Persia in the 5th century B.C, in
his book Historia, which is based on rumors.
(iii) Nirryakas, Aanecikrits, and Auristobulam
The purpose of these writers coming with Sikander was to tell the countrymen about India and their details are
more authentic and reliable.
(iv) Megasthanese
This was the ambassador of the Cellukas Niketer, who lived for six years in the court of 302 B.C Chandragupta
Maurya. In his book ‘Indica’, he wrote about the era of mouryans society and culture.
(v) Dimekus
He was the ambassador of the Syrian King Antiochus. Who came to the court of Bindusara.
(vi) Toulmi
Toulmi, the author of the book Geography of India, traveled to India in the second century.
(vii) Plini
He came India in the first century. Book titled ‘Natural History’, written by Plini. In this book, information about
Indian animals, trees, minerals etc. is obtained.
(viii) Periplus of the Earthrean Sea [Book Name]
There is no information about the author of this book. This author came on a visit the Indian Ocean in about 80
A.D. It has given information about the ports and trade items of India at the time.
CHINESE WRITER
Most Chinese travelers who came to India came to acquire knowledge about Buddhist shrines and Buddhism.
The major ones are:-
(i) Fahien
The Chinese traveler came to the court of Gupta rular Chandragupta II ‘Vikramaditya’ (375-415A.D). His original
purpose was to get information about Indian Buddhist texts. It has described the people of Madhya Pradesh as
glorious and prosperous in their description.
(ii) Sanyugn
This chinese traveler came to India in 518 AD. It collected the achievements of Buddhism in its three year journey.
(iii) Huentsang
He came to India during Harshvardhan’s reign. First he reached Indian state Kapisha. Staying in India for 15 to 16
years returned to china in 645 AD. He came to Bihar to study at Nalanda University located in Nalanda district and
to collect Buddhist texts from India. His travel details are famous as ‘Si-U-Ke’, in which the details of 38 countries
are available. It has described Harshakalin society, religion and politics. According to him Sindh King was Shudra.
At the time of Huensang’s studies, thr vice Chancellor was Acharya Shilbhadra.
(iv) Itsing
This Chinese traveler coming to India at the end of the 17th century described the status of India at Nalanda and
Vikramshila and its time.
(v) Hili
The biography of ‘Huentsang‘, written by him, is known to be the story of the history of Harsha.
(vi) Matwanli
Detail about Harsha’s Eastern campaign.
(vii) Chau-Ju-Kuwa
Detail about Chaul history.
ARABIC WRITER
(i) Albaruni (Aburihan)
He came to India with Mehmud Gaznabi. His works, written in Arabic, ‘Kitab-Ul-Hind’ or ‘Tehkik-A-Hind’
(Discovery of India) in which the beautiful light has been highlighted on the social norms of Rajput times.
(ii) Suleman
The Arab traveler who came to India in the 19th century wrote about the Parihar and Pal Kings. He called the Pal
Eepire ‘Ruhma’ (Religion or Dharmpal).
(iii) Almasudi
In 915-916 AD, Almasudi, who came from Baghdad, described the Parihar Kings.
OTHER WRITER
(i) Taranath
He was Tibetan writer. It composed a book called ‘Kangyure’ and ‘Tangyure‘. It contains information about Indian
history.
(ii) Marcopolo
He came on the journey of the Pandya nation at the end of the 13th century. Its description is useful for studying
Pnadya history.
