COURSE OUTLINE 2020-2021 – SEMESTER 2
PHA2020 – PHARMACOLOGY APPLIED TO NURSING I (BSN2 & BSM2)
OBJECTIVES:
This module aims to provide the students with:
1. An understanding of the basic principles underlying:
a) The introduction of a drug into the body
b) The passage of a drug through the various cells of the body
c) The methods by which a drug achieves its pharmacological effects
d) The changes a drug undergo in the body
e) The elimination of a drug from the body
2. An understanding of drugs classification in order to correlate the pharmacological actions of
drugs with their therapeutic applications.
3. An awareness that chemical substances can be useful as well as misused.
4. An awareness that a substance which seems entirely harmless to one individual
may prove to be a dangerous poison for another.
For each drug/drug class discussed, students are expected to know the:
a) Drug classification
b) Mechanism of action
c) Therapeutic effects
d) Adverse effects
e) Contraindication and interactions
f) Nursing implications

EVALUATIONS: Weightings
• In course test 1 15%
• In course test 2 15%
• Project 10%
• Calculations of drugs (practical) 15%
• Administration of drug (practical) 15%
• Final written examination 30%
(Module pass mark 60%)
FORMAT:
a) IN COURSE TESTS
o Multiple choices (30)
o Short response questions (20 marks)
o TOTAL = 50 MARKS
o The duration of each in course tests will be ONE HOUR
b) FINAL EXAMINATION
o Multiple choices (40)
o Short response questions (40 marks)
o One Assigned Essay (20 marks)
o TOTAL = 100 MARKS
o The duration of the final examination will be TWO HOURS
At the end of the course students will be asked to evaluate the course by completing an evaluation
form.
