Writing Abstracts: An Overview

Abstract writing is an increasingly sub – genre of academic writing. Abstracts is used by


researchers, scholars, and other member of different comunities to share, process, and organize the
prodigious amount of new information.

1. Defining the idea of an abstract

An abstract is a concise, self-contained summary of a longer work. They reduce longer research work to
its essential elements and are designed to “stand alone" or be presented by themselves.

2. An overview of different types of abstracts

Abstracts are often used to:

 Apply for research grants.


 Propose an idea for a book, a book chapter or a conference talk or paper.
 Complete the process of writing thesis or dissertation

One of the most common forms of abstracts is journal abstract. Journal abstract is used by writer
researchers when submitting a new publication to a print or online journal.

3. The different purposes of journal article abstracts can serve

Journal article abstracts are a very common type of abstracts. The ability to write a clear, concise and
effective journal abstract is an in-demand skill.

The functions or purposes of journal article abstracts :

 Stand alone mini – texts.


 Screening devices for researchers.
 Reader previews.
 Indexing help (for publishers and database administrators.

Journal abstracts are divided to :


1. Descriptive journal abstract
 Act as "outlines” of the work being described
 Often include information about a problem being studied and the method (s) used study
it
 Usually do not include information about results or conclusions of a study
 Short in lenght (often 100 to 150 words , sometimes even shorter )

2. Informative journal abstract.


 More comprehensive than descriptive abstracts
 Act as summaries of the original article
 Intended to "stand alone"
 They include the information found in descriptive abstracts as well as information about
the results of the study and any possible recommendations
 Longer length (often 200 to 300 words)

4. An analysis of the structure of one common type of abstract, the informative abstract.

5. A few tips and techniques to help you in your own abstract writing

 Read the work of other writer/researchers in your field


 Tailor your work the spesific requirements of the journal
 Get to the point
 Write the abstract last
 Revise, revise, revise
 When it doubts, ask for a help
EXAMPLE OF ECONOMIC JOURNAL ARTICLE ABSTRACT

Abstract. This paper presents an update of the ranking of economics journals by The Invariant method
as introduced by Palacio Hwyta and toll , with a broader sample of journals . By comparison with the two
other most prominent ranking , also proposes a list of forget journals , ranked according to their goality ,
as a Standard for the field of economies .
