OIL PRESSURE - ENGINE PROTECTION
CUMMINS
FAULT CODE: 143
PID: P100
SPN: 100
FMI: 1
Oil Pressure Sensor Circuit
DESCRIPTION
The oil pressure sensor is used by the electronic control module
(ECM) to monitor the lubricating oil pressure. The ECM monitors
the voltage on the signal pin and converts this to a pressure value.
The oil pressure value is used by the ECM for the engine protection
system.
- Confirm that the oil pressure sensor supply voltage is between (+)
4.5 and 5.25 VDC at the sensor.
- Verify, with the driver, the engine speed at which the fault occurs.
If the engine is being operated at too low of a speed under load, the
oil pressure can drop below the engine protection limits.
- Connect a manual gauge to monitor engine oil pressure and
compare to the value in diagnostic tool.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The oil pressure sensor is located on the engine block, below and
to the right of the ECM.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and verify the sensor accuracy with a mechanical gauge. Connect a
mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine. Connect diagnostic tool to vehicle datalink. Start the engine,
and compare the oil pressure reading on the service tool monitor screen to the reading on the mechanical oil
pressure gauge.
NOTE: If necessary, rev the engine up to make it easier to see differences in the readings.
The sensor reading is correct?
Yes - Go to 2A No - If Fault Code 141 is active, then go to Fault
Code 141.
Step 2A) Connect all the components and turn key switch ON. Disable the fault code. Start the engine, and
let it idle for 1 minute. Verify Fault Code 143 is inactive.
NOTE: If the fault code was at a particular speed, run the engine at that speed to verify the problem has
been corrected.
Fault Code 143 inactive?
Yes - Go to 2B No - return to the troubleshooting steps or contact
local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all the
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A
Step 2B) Connect all the components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All faults cleared?
Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes
with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
