The pandemic has had a colossal effect on the organizations around the globe. The shift from offices to
creating workspaces in homes has dissolved the distinction between professional and personal life. To enable
knowledge sharing across the organization, it’s clear that the traditional ‘create and push’ information
approach no longer meets employees evolving needs. The changing work experience has demanded the
leading organizations to implement and entirely new working environment i.e. the digital workplace in order
to rise amidst the pandemic challenges.
Few distinct challenges faced by the organizations, specially catering to the HR domain are:
1. Upgrading the technical digital toolbox: The massive rise in the use of technology has become
evident during the pandemic scenario. However, a significant shift from the desk job to a completely
technology based platform is not easy. Not all employees possess the necessary skill set and aren’t
extremely comfortable with going digital. Hence, the overall efficiencies have reduced
consequentially.
2. List of procedures and approvals: The pandemic time has brought with it the need of fast and
immediate action in the ever dynamic business environment. This however clashes with the long
procedural work and huge chains of approvals before an action which are quite common in any
organization. Hence, slow decision making in turn impacts decision implementation and thus lead to a
backward seat for many organizations in the time of crisis.
3. Employee comfort: The crisis is one of its kinds. Despite digital platforms, the lack of comfort with
using such portals makes it tedious for the HR professional to actually divert every employee on the
same page. Not only, the internal communication gets hampered due to distance barriers, but overall
management also requires an extra push.
4. Employee trust: The crisis has affected the jobs of many working professional, leading to a rapid rise
in people losing their hard earned jobs. In such times of uncertainty, gaining employee trust and
confidence becomes a difficult aspect. If constant fear of losing job would revolve in the minds of
employees, their dedication towards work would also be hampered and this poses a huge problem for
the HR professionals.
5. Mastering Emotional Intelligence in workplace: EI is an integral part of any organization and during
the time of crisis where collective efforts become a must, trust and communication becomes
hampered, a special focus on EI becomes the need of the hour and thus HR professionals must
specially focus on this aspect.
Despite challenges, the key to success lies in effective implementation of a digital workspace strategy capable
of driving true cultural change.
Following suggestions can be considered by the HR professionals for the same:
1. Provide direction, confidence and resilience: The pandemic has affected everyone in one way or
another. In such times, collective efforts turn out as a new strength. The HR professionals have a huge
role to bring back lost confidence of their employees. Not only can they provide them with mental
assurance but also try and connect with them on a personal front.
2. New Trainings: Specialized training sessions can be conducted to make the employees comfortable
with using the digital platforms.
3. Employee Safety: Special measures like employee insurance, paid leaves for employees affected with
the virus etc can be implemented to make the employees feel a part of family rather than a mere
professional workspace.
4. Counselling sessions: Since the pandemic has had huge effects on mental health and shifting to new
measures have been stressful, counselling and motivating sessions can be organized by the HR
professionals to ease out the stress and make employees comfortable.
Hence, efforts must be made to break down communication barriers, transform employee experience and
foster efficiency, innovation and growth. With right direction and collective efforts, organizations can
eventually ace the pandemic situation and emerge out as a hero.
