I. Introductory Concept

Digital Art – is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as part of
the creative or presentation process.

Types of Digital Art:

1. Computer graphics 4. Digital painting

2. Digital Photography 5. Digital collage

3. Photo-painting

When creating digital art, the same art elements and principles are applied.

Principles:

1. Balance – distribution of visual weight in an artwork. Three types: 1.

Symmetrical (two sides are the same) 2. Asymmetrical (two sides are different but visually
weighted equally) and 3. Radial (design emerges from center point).

2. Contrast – the difference between elements in a composition.

3. Pattern – decorates the artwork with regularly repeated elements such as

shapes or color.

4. Emphasis – a creation of a focal point in an artwork. It draws the viewer’s eye

to particular areas of the artwork.

5. Contrast – the difference between elements of art in a composition.

6. Unity – all the elements in the artwork are in harmony.

7. Movement – how the eye travels through an artwork. It can lead the viewer
from one aspect to another within the composition.

8. Rhythm - regular repetition of elements such as line, shapes, and forms to

create interest and consistency.

1
Elements:

1. Line – a path made by a moving point through space. It is one-dimensional and

can vary in width, direction, and length.

2. Shape – are flat, enclosed areas that are 2-dimensional.

3. Color – three properties of color; 1. Hue (color name), 2. Intensity

(strength/purity) and 3. Value (lightness and darkness).

4. Value – describes the lightness or darkness of a surface.

5. Texture – describes the surface quality of an object, how things feel and how
things look like they feel.

6. Space – used to create the illusion of depth within an artwork. It can also refer
to the positive and negative space between, around, or within objects.

7. Form – 3 dimensional and can be viewed from many angles.

I. Introductory Concept

Digital painting – the process of painting and creating artwork digitally on a

computer. This is done through painting software that uses brushes much like a traditional
painting.

Software Tools Used in Digital Painting:

1. Brush Tool – applies color similar to the way a traditional paintbrush would
apply paint on a canvas or paper. The edges of the lines created when using the brush
tend to be slightly softer than that of the other tools, mimicking a real brush.

2. Burn Tool - darkens an image. To use this tool, drag the icon over the image.

3. Dodge Tool – lightens an image. Drag the icon over the image you want to
lighten. The dodge and burn tool adds dimension to the drawing.

4. Eraser Tool – works very much like the common pencil eraser. It cleans up
imperfections in the work.

5. Gradient Tool – the tool used to highlight a color and make it fade from dark
to light.

6. Hand Tool – moves around an image within an object.

7. Paint Bucket Tool – fills or makes an area one color.

8. Pencil Tool – behaves much like the brush except that it has hard edges.

9. Pen Tool – makes lines and can be used to create different shapes.

10. Sponge Tool – soaks color out of the image.

11. Type Tool – places texts in a picture.

How to Digital Paint: A Tutorial for Beginners and Beyond

4 Digital Art Programs to Learn

1. Autodesk Sketchbook

Autodesk Sketchbook is compatible with

Mac and Windows devices and includes a diverse
range of pencils, inks, markers, and customizable
brushes. Using this program, you can take photos
of paper-based line drawings, upload them, and
make them even better with digital tools!

2. Adobe Fresco

Adobe Fresco gives you lots of cool ways to

use a stylus. With Adobe Fresco, your stylus can be
used for computer graphics or print-ready art—and
you can even use it to recreate the experience of
painting with oil or watercolor paints, thanks to the AI-
powered Live feature. If you love the look of soft,
whimsical watercolors or bright, vivid oil paints, you
can get it digitally with this program.

3. Procreate 5

Once you’ve gotten comfortable with

digital painting in Adobe Fresco, Procreate
might be your best next step. It’s used by
many professional artists, but even
beginners can learn to navigate it with just a
little practice.

Procreate offers 150 brush settings

compatible with the Apple Pencil. It also
allows you to import Photoshop tools and to
set up the canvas for your illustration so that
the colors you select are more accurately
represented in print.

1
4. Affinity Designer

This program comes recommended for

anyone especially interested in typography or
making patterns. Affinity Designer was
updated in the summer of 2020 and is known
for its speed, precision, and user-friendly
interface. When working on Affinity Designer
with your iPad and Apple Pencil, you can
zoom in to a whopping one million percent for
maximum detail work.

How to Digitally Paint in 5 Steps

Step 1: Choose Your Software

Now that you know some of the features and advantages of a handful of major
digital illustration programs, you’ll need to choose the one that will work best for you.

Step 2: Get to Know the Interface

This might sound a little obvious, but if you’re new to digital painting, it’s worth
making a point to get yourself acquainted with the software you’ll be using. Once you’ve
downloaded the program, open it on your device and spend some time exploring the
interface so you’re more comfortable navigating your way through it. Tap your way
through various screens, menus, and commands.

Step 3: Experiment with Brushes and Colors

You’ve got yourself a blank canvas, and it’s time to see what this digital illustration
program has to offer! Use your stylus to practice with different brushes and colors. You
can easily delete as you go. Once you’ve experimented with the tools available to you,
you can move on to a more focused project.

Step 4: Sketch Your Outline

You’ve experimented with the brushes and now you can choose the one you liked
best for drawing. Use that one to sketch out the basis of your illustration.

Step 5: Add Color

There are many ways to add color to your digital illustration, but beginners might
want to start by selecting a wider brush and simply coloring in your outline as you would
on paper. Different brushes will give you different textures for various sections of your
illustration.

II. Learning Competency from the MELCs

OPTION B: For pupils who don’t have access to an android phone.

ACTIVITY 1: Painting on Canvass Now: Digital Painting Later
Materials Needed:
a. watercolor
b. Oslo paper or bond paper
c. old magazines
d. paintbrush
Procedure:
1. Do a quick loose drawing of the landscape.
2. Using a big brush, paint the sky wet-on-dry with cobalt blue. Leave a spot of
light on the top of Half Dome untouched. Remember that the sky appears warmer and
lighter as it approaches the horizon, so add a tiny drop of yellow ochre to the bottom of
the blue wash. Also note that in this landscape, the sun is located on the right-hand side,
so the sky should be lighter there.

3
3. With a medium brush, loosely paint the distant trees using the mixtures of
ultramarine, ochre, quinacridone gold, and burnt sienna. Alternate the colors to give the
trees some variety and form.
Paint the mountains using cobalt blue, Winsor violet, and burnt sienna in various
combinations. Note that with this position of the sun, the Half Dome has a large form
shadow due to its vertical wall.
With a smaller brush, paint the trunk of the big tree, using the mixture of perylene
maroon and burnt sienna. Don’t work too hard on the branches — let the brush describe
their shapes. Use the side of the brush to create textural marks.
4. Add some more definition to the mountains and trees. Paint the cast shadows
with ultramarine. Note that the cast shadows are transparent and colorful, not gray.
5. At this stage, it’s time for final touch-ups and minor corrections. Add a few tree
trunks and slightly correct the shape of distant trees, if needed, by lifting some color.
6. Submit your final output to your teacher along with the other modules.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET No. 4

Name of Student: ____________________________________ Date: _____________

Learning Area: ARTS Grade Level: 6 Quarter: 2 Week: 5 - 6

I. Introductory Concept

What is a poster?

A poster is a kind of placard or announcement that has its goal to communicate

information through words and pictures or symbols. Posters are often displayed publicly
and vertically on windows, electrical posts, doors, walls, along the highways, etc.

What are the basics of layout?

The layout is an important part of making a poster. You do not want a boring and
flat poster. A layout artist is usually hired by design agencies to arrange everything found
within the poster.

Basics of a Layout

Step 1: Materials

Essential materials that you should have include:

Illustration board or cartolina, glue, scissors, cutter, ruler (T-square), soft pencil
and eraser, coloring materials, etc.

Dimensions: 32” high x 24” wide max.

Mountings: Use illustration board or any thick and heavy paper so that they will
stand up if displayed on its own.

Step 2: Studies/Sketches

Move your elements around. Sketch as many thumbnail ideas as possible. After
critiquing all your ideas, select your best three ideas and translate them into final designs.

1
Step 3: Theme
Decide which important message you want to communicate to your viewers.
Then, ask the message you want your poster design to be remembered.

Step 4: Title
Decide where to place the title. The title should be the
largest text, the most readable (from at least 5 ft. away), and
should be tied with and supported by all other elements on the
poster design. Avoid clutter. Less is more!

Step 5: Colors
Choose colors that help communicate the message and unify all the elements
together. Avoid too many colors, this is distracting.

Step 6: Words/ Fonts

Decide on what font to use, the font size, and where these texts should be placed.
These contributes to the power and visual appeal of the design.

2
Step 7: White space
White space is a vacant area in a poster. There are no texts, pictures, or other
graphic images covering the white space. The viewer’s eye will be overwhelmed if you
have too little and wander if you have too much. Aim for balance between areas without
images and texts and areas with one.

Basic Layout Principles

Source: INTERNET ACADEMY

1. Alignment and Repetition

Alignment and repetition are techniques that can help you create the base of a
page layout. Properly aligning elements and creating a uniformly repeating visual
language may help in identifying what you are trying to say.

2. Proximity

Proximity in a layout design is a technique to show relevance between elements

by consciously bringing those that are related to each other closer in a distance.

3. Contrast

Contrast helps emphasize the difference between elements on a website, and it

is used as a means to add distinctiveness to the design of individual elements.

The same elements are still applied in layouting.

Name of Student: ____________________________________ Date: _____________

Learning Area: ARTS Grade Level: 6 Quarter: 2 Week: 7 - 8

I. Introductory Concept

Posters have been around for quite some time. Today, posters are used for
practical applications, such as political campaigns, public-health drives, education, and
safety.

Types of Posters

1. Event Posters
Almost any type of public event is advertised with a poster
of some kind, with some leaving a lasting impression on our
collective memories.

2. Ad posters
Ad posters have given us many of modern history’s most
iconic pop-culture images. Many of these ads were
designed to be multi-purpose print ads, distributed through
magazines, newspapers, billboards, and posters around
cities.

3. Political posters
Some of the most famous posters are associated with major
moments and conflicts in human history. For example, in
World War II, Westinghouse Electric released the “We Can
Do It” poster to boost employee morale and reduce
absenteeism.

4. Movie posters
Of course, no discussion about posters would be complete
without movie posters.
These are perhaps the most popular and sought-after of
print materials.

5. Motivational posters
Often displayed in schools and classrooms, motivational
posters are made to inspire and make people believe more
or to think differently and positively.

1
6. Travel posters
Posters are perfect for the travel industry because they
make a strong visual statement. Tourism agencies, tour
companies, airports, and local governments have used
travel posters since the early 20th century to encourage
travel to different destinations.

7. Educational/Informative posters
These are used in the academic and corporate worlds to
convey instructions, research work, interesting facts,
company announcements, and more.

How to Design a Poster in Six Steps

1. Start with your foundation

Every successful design piece begins with the pre-design process.
a. Identify your brand image and personality
It’s important for the design to stay true to your brand’s image and personality.
How do you want people to see you? What values do you stand for?

b. Identify your poster’s audience

Before you start designing, take a moment to define your ideal viewer:
• Who is my target viewer?
• Why would that person be interested in my poster?
• What kind of content would they most likely respond to?
• What are their needs, challenges, and pain points?
• What can my brand/company/business do for them?

c. Define your poster’s message

A picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words. It’s a cliché, but it became one
for a reason. Your design doesn’t need a lot of text to say something.

2. Draft an outline
You need to create an outline to ensure any information you’re presenting is clear,
clean, and concise. Less is often more when it comes to posters. The more information
your poster has, the higher the risk that it will confuse and overwhelm the reader.

3. Choose your color mix

The color selection might be one of the most basic principles of visual design, but
it can take time to figure out if you’re someone who’s unfamiliar with color theory.
One technique we recommend using is the 60-30-10 color rule. Basically, you
want to pick a shade of a primary color: red, blue, or yellow. Next, pick two complementary
colors.
Your primary color should take up 60 percent of your poster design, while the two
other colors can take the remaining 30 and 10 percent.

2
4. Add your images
Dramatic and relevant photographs have been a staple of poster design for
decades. The right image can give your design a huge boost in visual appeal.

5. Add your copy

There are two things you’ll need to deal with at this stage to ensure your text
elements jive with your images and other graphic elements.

a. Typography
The fonts you choose will also have a significant effect on your poster’s mood and
message.

b. Text layout
The way your text is laid out on your poster is just as important as your typefaces.
You want to use the size and position of your text elements to tell the reader where
to look, like your headline and call to action.

6. Make sure your CTA is easy to spot

If your poster has a call to action, make sure it’s clear and visible to the reader.
The whole point of a CTA is to get people to take action, so it only makes sense
to draw people’s attention to it, but not so much that it overshadows your headline.

This guide only scratches the surface of the poster-design process. However, it
should equip you with everything you need to design and print a poster.
