BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS
When you were in Grade 8, you were introduced to a mathematical concept called
function and learned about linear functions. In Grade 9, you learned about quadratic
functions. Now that you are in Grade 10, you will continue to study functions and their
applications. Let us first do the activity below.
Do it Yourself Box
Your task is to create an open box. After doing the activity,
answer the guide questions that follow then check your answers
on the next page.
1. Prepare a square piece of paper measuring 6 inches on
each side.
2. From each corner of the square paper,
cut out a small square with any side
length measured in inches. Let the
length of the side be x. See the figure on
the right.
3. Fold up the four sides and tape them.
You now have an instant box.
Guide Questions:
1. What are the dimensions of the box in terms of x?
2. What is the volume of the box in terms of x?
3. Let x be 1 inch. Find the volume of the box.
2
ARNALDO I. CHUA
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS (LAS) Week 1-2 POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
The following are the answers to the guide questions:
1. The dimensions of the box (in inches) are (6 2x ), (6 2x ), and x .
2. The volume of the box (in cubic inches) is x (6 2x )2 .
3. If x 1, the volume of the box is 16 cubic inches.
This activity leads us to what we call a polynomial function. If we let V (x ) stand for the
volume of the box as a function of x, then we have the polynomial function V (x ) x (6 2x )2
in factored form or V (x ) 4x 3 24x 2 36x in standard form (terms are arranged in
decreasing powers of x). The polynomial function V (x ) 4x 3 24x 2 36x is in degree 3, has
leading coefficient 4 and a constant term 0.
In the activity, we also found the value of the polynomial function
3 2
V (x ) 4x 24x 36x at x 1 which is 16. This is an example of evaluation of a polynomial
function. To evaluate a polynomial function is to find the value of the function at a particular
value of the variable.
Definition. A polynomial function is a function defined
by P x an x n an 1x n 1 a n 2 x n 2 ... a1x a 0 where
n is a nonnegative integer, a n , a n 1 , a n 2 , ..., a1 , a 0 are

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS
Polynomial functions have many applications in life. They
are used to model real-life situations. Take for example the roller
coasters. Roller coasters are modelled by the polynomial function
y ax 6 bx 5 cx 4 dx 3 ex 2 fx g where a , b, c , d , e , f and g
are real numbers. If we consider one polynomial function like
y 0.05x 6 0.14x 5 14x 4 200 x 3 356x 2 976x 2000 and
get its graph, it will look like a roller coaster. See part of the graph of the function below.

In this learning activity sheet, we will learn how to sketch the graphs of polynomial
functions. Our knowledge of evaluating polynomials, solving polynomial equations and
graphing by point-plotting are needed here. After the manual sketch of a graph, we may verify
and validate it using some graphing utilities like Desmos or GeoGebra.
Let us begin with the intercepts of the graphs. Intercepts are important in graphing.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS (LAS) Week 1-2 POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
Finding the Intercepts of the Graph of a Polynomial Function
Before we start to graph, we have to find the x-intercepts and the y-intercept of the
graph of a polynomial function.
The x-intercepts are the x-values when y 0. The x-intercepts are also called the zeros
of a polynomial function or the roots of a polynomial equation.
The y-intercept is the value of y when x 0.
Example 1: Find the intercepts of the polynomial function y x 1 2x 1 x 2 .
Solution:
To find the x-intercepts, we set y 0, equate each factor to 0 and solve for x.
Thus, x 1 2x 1 x 2 0 x 1 0 or 2x 1 0 or x 2 0
x 1 or x 1 or x 2
2
The x-intercepts are 1, 1 , and 2. This means that the graph of the function
2
y x 1 2x 1 x 2 will intersect the x-axis at the points 1, 0 , 12 ,0 and 2, 0 .
To find the y-intercept, replace x by 0 and determine the value of y.
Thus, y 0 1 0 1 0 2 2. The y-intercept is 2. This means the graph of the
function will intersect the y-axis at the point 0, 2 .
Example 2: Find the intercepts of the polynomial function y x 3 2x 2 5 x 6.
Solution:
To find the x-intercepts, we set y 0 and find the roots of the equation
x 2x 5 x 6 0. By the Rational Root Theorem, the roots are 2, 1, and 3. Thus, the
3 2
x-intercepts are 2, 1, and 3 and the graph of the function will intersect the x-axis at
2, 0 , 1, 0 , and 3, 0 .
To find the y-intercept, replace x by 0 and determine the value of y.
Thus, y 03 2 0 5 0 6 6. This means that the graph of the function will intersect
2
the y-axis at the point 0, 6 .
Example 3: Find the intercepts of the polynomial function y 2x 4 3x 3 18x 2 27x .
Solution:
To find the x-intercepts, we set y 0 and find the roots of the equation
4 3 2
2x 3x 18x 27 x 0. Note that we can factor completely the left side of the equation.
7
ARNALDO I. CHUA
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS (LAS) Week 1-2 POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
so that 2x 4 3x 3 18 x 2 27 x x x 3 x 3 2x 3 0. Setting each factor to 0 and
solving for x, we get the roots 3, 0, 3 , and 3. Thus, the x-intercepts are 3, 0, 3 , and 3
2 2
and the graph of the function will intersect the x-axis at 3, 0 , 0, 0 , 32 ,0 , and 3, 0 .
To find the y-intercept, replace x in the function by 0 and find the value of y.
Clearly, the y-intercept is 0 and the graph will intersect the y-axis at (0,0).
Constructing the Table of Signs and Sketching the Graph
After we find the intercepts of a polynomial function, we next consider the position of
the graph of a polynomial function relative to the x-axis. Essential in this case are the
intervals obtained when the x-intercepts partition the x-axis. From within each interval, we
can choose a test value to determine whether the graph is above or below the x-axis. A table
containing all information about the function will help us sketch its graph. We need to
construct a table of signs.
Example 1: Construct a table of signs for y x 1 2x 1 x 2 and sketch its graph.
The x-intercepts of the given function are 1, 1 , and 2. These are the only values
2
where the graph intersects the x-axis. These values also divide the x-axis into four intervals:
x 1, 1 x 1 , 1 x 2, and x 2. Test values are chosen from within each interval
2 2
and the sign is determined using the test value. See the table of signs below.

Using the information from the table of signs and knowing
that the y-intercept is 2, we can now sketch the graph of the
polynomial function. The graph is shown on the right. Let us
describe the position of the graph with respect to the x-axis.
Note that for all values of x which are less than 1, the graph of
the function is below the x-axis, between 1 and 1 , the graph is
2
above the x-axis, between 1 and 2, the graph is below the x-axis
2
and for greater than 2, we see that the graph is above the x-axis.

Example 2: Construct a table of signs for y x 3 2x 2 5 x 6 and sketch its graph.
The x-intercepts of the given function are 2, 1, and 3. These values divide the
x-axis into four intervals: x 2, 2 x 1, 1 x 3, and x 3. Factoring the right
side of the function, we have y x 2 x 1 x 3 . Below is the table of signs.
Interval x 2 2 x 1 1 x 3 x 3

Using the information from the table of signs and knowing
that the y-intercept is 6, we can now sketch the graph of the
polynomial function y x 3 2x 2 5 x 6.
We see from the figure shown on the right that the graph is
above the x-axis for all values of x less than 2. The graph is below the
x-axis if the values of x are between 2 and 1. On this part, the graph
crosses the y-axis at point 0, 6 . The graph is above the x-axis once
again when the values of x are between 1 and 3. Finally, the graph is
below the x-axis for all values of x that are greater than 3.
Example 3: Construct a table of signs for y 2x 4 3x 3 18x 2 27x and sketch its graph.
The x-intercepts of the given function are 3, 0, 3
2 , and 3. These values divide the
x-axis into five intervals: x 3, 3 x 0, 0x , 3

2 x 3, and x 3.
Since y 2x 3x 18x 27x x x 3 2x 3 x 3 , we have the table of signs below.

Using the information from the table of signs and knowing
that the y-intercept is 0, we can now sketch the graph of the
polynomial function y 2x 4 3x 3 18x 2 27x .
Shown on the right is the graph of the function. Notice that
the graph is above the x-axis whenever the values of x are less
than 3, between 0 and 3 , and greater than 3. The graph is
2
below the x-axis whenever the values of x are between 3 and 0,
and also between 3 and 3.

the turning points of a graph cannot be determined at this point, we are sure that the

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS
You learned how to sketch manually the graph of a polynomial function using
intercepts and table of signs. This time you will learn other things which are also useful to
in order get a more accurate graph of a function. Consider the following functions and their
graphs and answer the questions that follow.
1. y 2x 3 3x 2 3x 2
a. What is the sign of the leading coefficient?
b. Is the degree of the polynomial function even or odd?
c. Examine the end behaviors of the graph on both
sides. Tell whether it is rising or falling to the left
or rising or falling to the right.

3. y 2x 4 3x 3 18x 2 27 x
a. What is the sign of the leading coefficient?
b. Is the degree of the polynomial function even or odd?
c. Examine the end behaviors of the graph on both
sides. Tell whether it is rising or falling to the left
or rising or falling to the right.
4. y x 4 2x 3 x 2 2x
a. What is the sign of the leading coefficient?
b. Is the degree of the polynomial function even or odd?
c. Examine the end behaviors of the graph on both
sides. Tell whether it is rising or falling to the left
or rising or falling to the right.
What you observed from the four cases are what the Leading Coefficient Test is
all about. This test can help in determining the end behaviors of the graph of a function as
x increases or decreases without bound.
The Leading Coefficient Test
1. If the degree of a polynomial function is odd and the leading coefficient is positive,
then the graph of the polynomial function is falling to the left and rising to the right.
2. If the degree of a polynomial function is odd and the leading coefficient is negative,
then the graph of the polynomial function is rising to the left and falling to the right.
3. If the degree of a polynomial function is even and the leading coefficient is positive,
then the graph of the polynomial function is rising to the left and rising to the right.
4. If the degree of a polynomial function is even and the leading coefficient is negative,
then the graph of the polynomial function is falling to the left and falling to the right.
The Multiplicity of the Zero of a Polynomial Function
We have learned two properties of the graph of a polynomial function: the intercepts
and end behaviors based on the Leading Coefficient Test. When we sketch the graph, it is
also important to know if the graph crosses the x-axis or is tangent to the x-axis at each zero
or x-intercept. In this case, we need to consider the multiplicity of each zero of a polynomial
function.
14
ARNALDO I. CHUA
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS (LAS) Week 1-2 POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
Consider the polynomial function
y x x 1 x 1
2 3
and its graph shown on the right.
The zeros of the function are 1 (multiplicity 3),
0 (multiplicity 1), and 1(multiplicity 2). Let us find out
the relationship between the multiplicity of a zero and
whether the graph crosses or is tangent to the x-axis.
Study the table below. What have you observed?
Zero Multiplicity Characteristic of Multiplicity Behavior of Graph Relative to x-axis
(Odd or Even) at this Zero (Crosses or Tangent to )
1 3 odd crosses the x-axis
0 1 odd crosses the x-axis
1 2 even tangent to x-axis
Relation Between the Multiplicity of a Zero and the Graph of a Polynomial
Function
1. If the multiplicity of a zero of a polynomial function is odd, then the graph of the function
crosses the x-axis.
2. If the multiplicity of a zero of a polynomial function is even, then the graph of the function
is tangent to the x-axis.
Note that when the graph crosses the x-axis, the graph changes from positive to
negative or from negative to positive. If the graph is tangent to the x-axis, the graph is
either positive on both sides or negative on both sides of the zero of a function.
The Turning Points of a Graph
Study the table below and find out the relation between the degree of a function and
the number of turning points of its graph.
Number of
Polynomial Function Graph Degree Turning Points
1. y 2x 3 3x 2 3x 2 3 2

3. y 3x 4 4x 3 x 2 x 4 3
4. y x 4 x 2 x 1 4 1
5. y x 5 2x 3 1 5 2
What have you observed about the turning points of each graph in the table?
Notice that the graph of each polynomial function is continuous, smooth and has
rounded turns. The turning points of a graph occur when the function changes from
decreasing to increasing values or from increasing to decreasing values and the number of
turning points is less than the degree of the function. Furthermore, the number of turning
points of the graph of a function of degree n is at most (n – 1). Thus, if the polynomial
function is y 2x 6 3x 5 x 3, then the graph of this function has at most (6-1) or at most
5 turning points and the possible number of turning points are 5, 3 or 1. If you graph the
function, you will find the actual number of turning points to be 3.
