A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

The document outlines a detailed lesson plan in mathematics for operations on functions, including objectives, content, procedures, examples, applications, and evaluation. The lesson introduces the key operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of functions, providing formulas and examples of applying each operation. Students work in groups on example problems, then the lesson concludes with a matching activity to assess understanding of operations on functions.

A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8

PREPARED BY: Mark Jede Cajeles

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Arnel E. Bulaan

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, you can:

a. Identify the different operations on functions through discussion.

b. Enumerate the steps on how to perform the different operations on

functions.

c. Perform operations on functions.

d. Solve problems involving different operations on functions.

II. Content: Operations on Function

Learning Resources:

a. Reference: Next Generation Math: Advanced Algebra; Pages 11-12

b. Materials: Answer sheets, Visual Aids

c. Subject Integration: Music

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparation
Good morning, class. Good morning, Sir.
How are you this morning? We are fine, Sir.
Before we start our class, may I request
Ana to lead the prayer. (Ana leads the prayer)
Who are absent from our class today? None, Sir.
Very good, everyone is present.
Can you please check the alignment of
your chairs and pick up the trash under it. (Students do as what is instructed)

B. Review
Last time, we’ve discussed about
functions and relations. It was said that
relation is a set of ordered pairs in which (Students listen attentively)
every ordered pairs consists of x and y.
While function is a relation where each
element of the domain has a distinct value
that corresponds the range.
What is the meaning of domain? Jay. Jay: Domain is the set of all x-values.
Very good, Jay!
How about range, Lisa? Lisa: Range is the set of all y-values.
Very good, Lisa. What do we use to
determine if the graph of the relation is a
function or not? Dave. Dave: Vertical Line Test, sir.
Very good, Dave I see that you really
understand our lesson yesterday. You (Students listen attentively)
must remember it because you might use
it in our next lessons, or in the future. You
never know.

C. Motivation
Now, I will teach you a song entitled
“Mathematics is Fun!” Who among you
here knows the song? (Some students raise their hands)
Ok, I want you to sing after me….
“Mathematics, Mathematics”
“It is fun, it is fun.”
“Multiply and Divide, Subtraction,
Addition”
“It is fun, It is fun.”
Repeat the song two times.
Very Good!

D. Discussion
From the song, you noticed the
different operations on functions. These
are addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division. Given the functions f and g,
these are the formulas for the said
operations:
(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x) Addition
(f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x) Subtraction
(f . g)(x) = f(x) . g(x)
Multiplication
(f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x) Division

For the function f + g, f – g , f . g, the

domains are defined as the intersection of
the domains of f and g. For f/g, the
domains are the intersection of the
domains f and g except for the points
where g(x)= 0.
(Students listen to the lecture)
Example:
If f(x)=2x2 + x-3 and g(x)= x – 1, find the
following and determine the domain of
the resulting function.
a. (f + g)(x) b. (f – g)(x)
c. (f . g)(x) d. (f/g)(x)

Solution:
a. f +g(x) = (2x2 + x – 3)+(x+1)
= 2x2 + 2x – 4
* Domains of (f + g)(x) is the set of real
numbers.
b. ( f – g )(x)=( 2x2 + x – 3) – (x-1)
= 2x2 – 2
* Domains of (f – g)(x) is the set of real
numbers.
c. (f . g)(x)=(2x2 + x – 3)(x – 1)
= 2x3 + x2 – 4x + 3
* Domains of (f . g)(x) is the set of real
numbers.
f ( ) 2 x 2+ x−3
d.()g
x=
x −3
( 2 x +3 ) ( x−1 )
= Students: Yes, sir.
x−3
= 2x + 3
f
* Domains of ( )(x) is the set of real
g
numbers except 1.
Did you understand class?
Very good!

E. Application
I will group you into two. In a sheet of
paper, group 1 will answer problem
number 1 and group 2 will answer
problem number 2:
1. f(n)=n3 + 4n and g(n)=3n – 1
(Students answer the problems)
Find (g . f)(n).
r 3−4 r
2.b ( r ) = 2 and
r + 4 r−12
2 r 2 +12 r Students: Addition, Subtraction,
k (r )= 3 2 find (k . b)(r) .
r −3 r Multiplication, and Division

You have 15 minutes to answer that.

F. Generalization
Based on what we discussed, what are Students: (f + g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)
the operations on functions? (f – g)(x)=f(x)-g(x)
(f.g)(x)=f(x).g(x)
(f/g)(x)=f(x)/g(x)

Correct. You should also remember the

formulas corresponding each operation,
which is……?

V. Evaluation

Match the operations of functions f,g, and h in Column A with their answers in Column
B.

f(x)=8x3 – 27 h(x)=2x – 3 g(x)=2x3+x2+x – 6

Column A Column B

1. f(x)+g(x) a. 22+x2+3x – 9

2. f(x) – g(x) b. 4x2+6x+9

3. g(x) – h(x) c. 10x3+x2+x – 33

f ( x)
4. d. 6x3 – x2 – x -21
h( x)

5. g(x) + h(x) e. 2x3+x2 – x – 3

VI. Assignment

Analyze and Solve the problem.

1. Find (f . g)(x) – (g . f)(x) if f(x)=ax+b and g(x)= - ax – b. Without solving.

2. What is (f . g)(x) – (g . f)(x) if f(x)=3x+6 and g(x)= -3x-6?
