Defoamer Testing Method

This document describes 4 test methods for evaluating the performance of defoamers: 1) Vertical vibration test for shock/bubbling environments, 2) Cycle bubbling/air drum test for cyclic foaming, 3) High-speed dispersion test for stirring/foaming environments, and 4) Gas bubbling test for aeration/fermentation foaming. Each method provides details on equipment, procedures, and parameters to measure defoaming rate and ability to suppress foam over time. Customers can adjust test cycles from 1 day to 3 months based on their specific conditions.

Test defoamer performance

Test
method

The four test methods basically cover the way of foaming in the
industrial production process
 Vertical vibration test (shaking bottle method) Suitable for shocking and bubbling environments or under
conditions where there is no specific test equipment (mostly used in industries such as textiles, metalworking fluids or
industries with similar bubbling methods)

Features: It is used to quickly distinguish the anti-foaming performance of the anti-foaming agent, and it has a wide range of
applicability.
 Testing method:
Take 250mL plastic bottle to measure 100±0.5g of the
prepared metalworking fluid aqueous solution (including
1% defoaming Agent), add it to the vertical oscillator and
set the parameters: speed: 450rpm; amplitude: 30mm;
respectively Oscillate for different times, and record the
defoaming time after stopping.

• Remarks: The test cycle of resistance to attenuation in terms of performance can be 1 day to 3 monthsVarying
(customers can adjust according to specific conditions)
 Cycle bubbling and air drum test
Suitable for testing under cyclic impact foaming environment (mostly used in paper pulping, power plant
desulfurization, industrial cleaning and circulating water treatment and other impact foaming industries)

Features: There are requirements for the defoaming performance of the defoamer in the early stage and the ability to
suppress the foam in the later stage.

 Testing method
Clean the cyclic bubbling test instrument, add the specified amount of
foaming liquid, and heat to the set temperature; at a flow rate of 6L/min,
circulate bubbling to the specified foam volume of 300ml, and record the
corresponding blank time. Then add the prepared defoamer sample and
record the change rule of foam volume V over time. And calculate the
defoaming agent's anti-foaming rate.

Remarks: The test cycle of resistance to attenuation in terms of performance can

range from 1 day to 3 months(Customers can adjust according to specific conditions)
 High-speed dispersion test
Suitable for testing under stirring and bubbling environment. (Mostly used in coatings, adhesives, building materials
and other industries where stirring and foaming)Features: High requirements on the shear resistance of the defoamer
itself.
 testing method:
Add 100±0.5g of adhesive to a 250ml
steel cup, then add 0.30g (accurate to
0.01g) defoamer and disperse at high
speed on a 2000rpm high-speed disperser
for 15 minutes. After placing it, take a
picture of the surface and test the density.

Remarks: The test cycle of resistance to attenuation in terms of performance can

range from 1 day to 3 months(Customers can adjust according to specific conditions)
 Gas bubbling test
It is suitable for testing under some aeration and fermentation form foaming environment. (Applied to industries
with aeration and foaming such as water treatment and fermentation)

Features: Focus on the ability of defoamers to inhibit foam in the system.

Testing method:
Clean the air drum test instrument, add 200±1ml of
standard foaming liquid to a 1000ml graduated cylinder,
add 0.10g() of defoamer, stir the foaming liquid evenly, turn
on the bubbler, and record the volume of foam V as time
goes by Calculate the defoaming rate and foam suppression
rate.

Remarks: The test cycle of resistance to attenuation in terms of performance can

range from 1 day to 3 months(Customers can adjust according to specific conditions)
