SAMPLE ANSWERS

TOPIC 29 - Weekends
What do you usually do on weekends?
Well literally anything. I’m supposed to do chores on Saturday and it takes me hours
to do one. On Sunday, I usually schedule a meeting with my friends. We mostly just
eat out, drink craft beers and play board games, but we occasionally watch a movie
or go to an event in the city.

Would you say weekends are important to us?

Yes, I could say, that weekends are really important. Weekends give us the chance to
improve on ourselves as people rather than always improving our professional skills,
to spend time with friends and family, and to plan a weekend trip in a nearby place.
Thanks to weekends, we are more relaxed and productive when we go back to work.

Do you often go to the cinema on weekends?

I probably only go once every two or three months because I have less time now
than I did when I was a student, and when I do have free time, I usually want to hang
out with my friends and have a chat, rather than sit down and watch films.

Vocabulary:

28. Cooperation
Would you prefer to study alone or with others?
To tell the truth, I always prefer to study alone than to study in groups because I am
an introvert and I cannot mingle with people easily.

Do you remember a time when you need to cooperate with others?

Yes. When I was a student, I needed to work with others in a team for a project. That
was good cooperation because we had a nice leader who managed the team
effectively/productively/well and received respect from other members.

TOPIC 9
(Who this person is) Today I’m gonna talk about a businessperson that I admire who has
taught me public speaking. He is Mr Anh, the CEO of my company. Despite his young age,
he holds an important position in the company and is highly valued (đánh giá) by other
people. Apart from being my superior, he is also my university senior, and we get on/along
(hòa hợp) very well with each other.
(What he/she is like) Being a chief executive, he is always occupied (bận rộn) with work, but
I rarely see him displaying tiredness. Mr.Quan is in charge of directing the company as well
as delegating (giao việc) tasks to personnel. Besides, he also undertakes crucial
negotiations with other partners (đối tác), which requires both interpersonal (giao tiếp) skills
and working experience accumulated (tích lũy) over the years.
(What he/she taught you) Well, I first met him through a start-up competition, in which his
team convincingly won the first prize. In his team, Mr Quan stood out as the most competent
(tài năng, đáng gờm) contestant, with his articulate (lưu loát) and assertive performance in
public speaking, which mainly contributed to his team’s astounding victory. Therefore, I tried
to make friends with him after the competition and asked for his tips with regards to public
speaking. Luckily, he accepted without hesitation (lưỡng lự) and from then on, he has been
very accommodating (helpful).
(And how you felt about him/her) I feel really fortunate to get to know him and be instructed
by him to speak more confidently in front of the public. Under any circumstances, he would
maintain (keep) his punctuality, which not only endears himself to clients but also set a good
example for other employees. Most importantly, he always handles every situation with
responsibility and complete impartiality (công bằng không thiên vị).

10. Describe a time you were friendly to someone you didn’t like.

(When and where it happened) I had to do numerous group projects in college. I still
remember fondly a group project I had in one of my classes, in which we had to find
information about British geographical conditions, history, and business culture. While it was
not the most fascinating project in my college life, it was a good one.

(Who he/she was) I had a group of friends in that class, so naturally, we’d stay together and
form a group of our own. However, we did not meet the requirement regarding the number of
people in a group, so more people joined us as insisted by the lecturer. There was this one
student whom I didn’t have a good impression of.

(Why you didn’t like this person) It was not a groundless judgement that I passed on her.
From what I could see: not only was she not very bright a student, but she was also a not
very attentive one. We had a hard time getting her to start working, and even a harder time
getting her to change the false information and correct the lexical and grammatical errors in
her part.
(Why you were friendly with her on this occasion) I was getting impatient with her as I was
the one who was in charge of overseeing the project, but I chose to remain friendly for the
benefit of the group, whose spirit might have gone down were a big quarrel to happen. I
even went so far as to correct her language mistakes because I wanted to send the lecturer
our best product. Furthermore, it had previously been announced that the grading would be
individual grade, which essentially meant others could still get decent grades if they worked
hard. Thus, it was a lot easier to be nice to lazy students in the group.

Vocabulary
1. We have discussed these plans on ______ occasions.
2. The movie has a ________ plot.
3. Your concerns are _________.
4. As a marketing manager, her job is to _________ all the company's advertising.
5. It's good, but I wouldn't __________ say that it's great.

1. Why are people friendly with a person they don't like?

People can be friendly to others, even to people they don’t like, for various reasons.
Some do that because those who they don’t like have what they want. Some are nice
and friendly because the people they don’t like haven’t done anything harmful to
them anyway. And some are just nice to everyone because they are genuinely nice
and have friendly manners no matter who they are with.

2. What are the differences between being friendly and being polite?
Being polite is to adhere to social norms, such as making eye contact with a person
with whom you are having a conversation, or respecting the personal space of
others, while being friendly is showing sincere and positive affection towards
someone. You don’t have to be friendly to be polite, but you have to be polite to be
friendly.

3. What are some qualities of a good friendship?

A good friendship is one in which both parties can point out each other’s flaws and
make positive changes together accordingly. This process takes many other qualities
to pull off, such as trust, empathy, and loving affection. It is also a friendship where
one can feel safe, and both parties are equal.

4. Is it important for people to have a good friendship with their colleagues?

Yes. People tend to perform better when working in a healthy and sociable
environment. Moreover, having another person to chat with when you have a break,
or knowing who to sit next to in a long meeting would be a source of comfort during
working hours, especially if you have a mentally-taxing job.

Vocabulary
1. Various (a)
2.
3. Sincere (a)
4. Flaw (n)
5. Mentally-taxing (a)
