THE LIFE STORY OF DR. BENJAMIN R.

BRINGAS
(1927-2013)
by Darren C. Cariño

Proverbs 16:3 -Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Dr. Benjamin Rivas Bringas was born on August 7, 1927 in the City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur. He was
2nd of the 4 children of the Rev. Dr. Pablo Blanco Bringas and Ms. Concepcion Palado Rivas.

His father, Pastor Pablo, studied Bachelor of Arts in Silliman University and Bachelor of Sacred
Literature in Drake University in Iowa, USA and became a distinguished Filipino minister, Bishop
of the Evangelical Church in the Philippines and Moderator of the Northwest Luzon Conference of
the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. His mother served as public school teacher and later
taught music in Abra Valley College.

As a young boy, he was inspired by his father and mother in their Christian witness and service. Dr.
Ben took his Bachelor of Arts in Silliman University. In Silliman, he was determined to be a doctor
to be able to help people and to serve in the name of Christ. He was then sent to Manila and studied
Medicine in Manila Central University.

In 1956, he married Ms. Loreto Valera in the University of the Philippines Protestant Chapel,
Diliman, Quezon City now known as the Church of the Risen Lord. One of their wedding principal
sponsors was then Rev. Dr. Norwood Tye, General Secretary of the UCCP.

After he passed the board, Dr. Ben worked as a physician and surgeon. In 1970, he took over the
management of the Bangued Christian Hospital. Through God’s provision, funds were raised, and a
new hospital building was built in the hillside of Casamata – one with the express purpose of
glorifying God.

He was known for his generosity and compassion. He gave widely to charitable causes and was
active member of the Rotary Club.

In 1972, he was conferred as the Most Outstanding Physician in the country. Dr. Ben also received
numerous merits and awards for his services in community development and in the Church.

From the beginning, Dr. Ben always asked God’s help in his work in the hospital. No operation was
performed without a prayer asking Him for help. For a serious patient, he would pray beside the
patient, when he made his rounds. He also makes sure that his nursing staff are well verse of the
Word of God.

On March 11, 2013, Dr. Ben left to be with the Lord he served at the age of 84 in Bangued
Christian Hospital. He left behind his widow, Mrs. Loreto Bringas, who, like him, was unstinting in
her support of the hospital.

The hospital owes its existence to the tenacity and perseverance of Dr. Benjamin Bringas. His
vision guides us still. Through the years, many of our people - doctors, nurses, allied health, office
workers, support - have helped the hospital to stay true to Dr. Ben’s calling. #
