Assignment No. 1 Physics

The document describes how to use several common laboratory measurement instruments: a triple beam balance, Vernier caliper, micrometer, meter stick, stopwatch, and spring scale. It provides pictures and descriptions of each instrument, outlines their functions, and lists step-by-step instructions for how to use them to obtain measurements.

Instrument: Meter Stick

Function: The triple beam balance is a

measuring instrument comprising a beam
supported on a fulcrum. A triple beam balance
measures the mass and not the weight of an
object.
Figure no. 1 Parts of Triple Beam Balance
How to use:
1. Before you weigh something, ‘zero‘ the balance. Do this by sliding back all the
weight poises (that slide along the beams) so that the pointer is right at the zero line.
2. When you set an object on the balance platform, the pointer immediately goes up and
is no longer zeroed. To find out the weight of the object, you’ll need to slide the
weight poises until the pointer is at zero again. Start with the two heavier weight
poises and then use the lightest one to do the fine tuning.

Instrument: Vernier caliper

Function: The Vernier caliper allows users to
measure distances with a far greater degree of
accuracy than a measuring scale which is vital
in most.
Figure no. 2 Parts of Vernier Caliper

How to use:
1. Slide one of the jaws against the object. The caliper has two types of jaws. The larger
ones tighten around an object, to measure the distance across it. The smaller jaws fit
into an opening, and can then be pushed outward to measure its internal diameter.
2. Read the main scale where it lines up with the sliding scale's zero. The main scale on a
Vernier caliper typically tells you the whole number plus the first decimal.
3. Read the Vernier scale. Find the first mark on the Vernier scale that lines up perfectly
with any line on the main scale. That mark tells you the value of the additional digits.
4. Add the numbers together. Add the main scale and Vernier scale results together to get
the final answer.
Instrument: Micrometer
Function: A micrometer is a tool used for the
precise measurement of very small objects. A
micrometer can measure the depth, length and
thickness of whatever object fits between its

anvil and spindle.
How to use:
1. Hold the object in your left hand and place it against the anvil.
2. Hold the micrometer with your right hand.
3. Spin the ratchet counter clockwise. Be sure the 0 on the thimble is lined up with the
scale on the sleeve.
4. Twist until the spindle is against the object.
5. Set the thimble lock while the micrometer is still on the object.
6. Slide out the object carefully.
7. Write down the measurements before unlocking the spindle.

Instrument: Meter Stick

Function: A meter stick is either a straightedge
or foldable ruler used to measure length, and is
especially common in the construction industry.
They are often made of wood or plastic, and
often have metal or plastic joints so that they
can be folded together.
Figure no. 4 Meter stick

How to use:
1. Line the meter stick up along with the item you wish to measure
2. Look if you want to measure it in centimeters or millimeters
3. Then you well find your number of measure
Instrument: Stopwatch
Function: It is commonly used in laboratories,
it can measure a time interval up to 0.01
second. It starts to indicate the time lapsed as
the start/stop button is pressed. As soon as
start/stop button is pressed again, it stops and

Mechanical Stopwatch between start and stop of an event.

How to use:
1. Press the reset button to reset your stopwatch to 0. Depress the button quickly and
completely several times to completely reset the movement to 0.
2. Press the crown down firmly to start the stopwatch
3. Press the crown down firmly to stop the stopwatch
4. Repeat step-1 to ready the stopwatch for the next event
Instrument: Newton Scale (Spring Balance)
Function: A spring scale or newton meter is a
type of weighing scale. It consists
of spring fixed at one end with a hook to attach
an object at the other. A spring scale cannot
measure mass, only weight. A spring balance
can be calibrated for the accurate measurement
of mass in the location in which they are used
Figure no. 6 Parts of Newton Scale

How to use:
1. Measure weight or force by hanging objects from the spring scale hook.
How to read measurement:
 This force is usually measured in Newton’s and is essentially the weight of an object.
The weight of an object is a measurement of its mass x gravity (w=mg)
