Module 1 - Intro To Architectural Interiors

1. The document discusses architectural space and how it is defined by elements like walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs that separate and shelter interior spaces. 2. It also covers how buildings relate to their sites through exterior walls and spatial transitions. Structural systems like foundations and superstructures are discussed as well as enclosure and building service systems. 3. The shaping and modification of interior space is addressed through dimensions, forms, openings, and expansions. Design vocabulary, elements, and principles are introduced.

ARCHITECTURAL SPACE EXTERIOR SPACE

 Defining Space  Buildings – relation to the site

 A wall, an opaque plane, marks off a portion of amorphous space
and separates here from there
 Exterior Walls
 A floor defines a field of space with territorial boundaries
 A roof provides shelter for the volume of space beneath it

INTERIOR SPACE STRUCTURING SPACE

 Structural Systems
 Interior Space  Superstructure: vertical extension of the
foundation system (columns, beams and
load-bearing walls that support the floor
and roof structures)
 Foundation: substructure that forms the
base of a building, anchors it firmly to
the ground and supports the building
elements and spaces above

ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES

 Elements are the ingredients you have to work

with when designing:
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN • Space

• Value

• Color

DESIGN ELEMENTS COLOR

 Color  element of design that is derived from reflected light

 has three properties: hue, value, and intensity

 Hue
 the name of a color
 primary hues are red, yellow, and blue

 Value
 refers to the lightness or darkness of an object

 Intensity
 refers to the brightness and dullness of a color

LINE TEXTURE

 a mark drawn with a pointed, moving tool  element of design that refers to how things feel, or look as if
they might feel if touched
 has different lengths, widths, textures, directions, and
degrees of curve  can be hard, soft, rough, smooth, slippery, sticky, scratchy

SHAPE FORM

 a two dimensional area that is defined in some way  element of design that includes objects that have three
dimensions
 can be defined through line, color, or value
 has height, width, and depth
 has only height and width

SPACE

 Space, or negative space, is the element of design that refers

to the emptiness or area between, around, below, or within
objects

 are defined by space around and within them
