SESSION SUMMARY
Influence lines shows the flow or changes in the intensity of the effect such as support
reactions, shear, bending moment, etc. of a load as it moves or traverses along over a flexural
member (beams). Also, it simplifies the method or methodology of finding the location by
which a moving load will generate the maximum effect as well as the minimum on the beam.
SELF ASSESSMENT
ACTIVITY 1
“Influence Lines for Statically Determinate Beams”
1. For a 7.5-m span simple beam, construct the influence lines for (a) reaction at the
supports; (b) shear at section 3-m from the left end support; (c) bending moment at
section 2-m from the right end support. Also, solve for the: (i) maximum and
minimum values of the functions due to a concentrated load of 20-kN; and (ii)
maximum and minimum values of the functions due to a continuous constantly
distributed load of 5-kN/m.
2. For an overhanging beam with a 2-m overhang on the right end support (no
overhang on the left support) and a clear span of 5-m between supports, construct the
influence lines for (a) reactions at the supports; (b) shear at section 3-m from the left
end support; (c) bending moment at section 2-m from the left end support. Also,
solve for the: (i) maximum and minimum values of the functions due to a
concentrated load of 25-kN; and (ii) maximum and minimum values of the
functions due to a continuous constantly distributed load of 10-kN/m.
