DTC C0131 00: ABS Pressure Circuit: Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle
DTC Descriptor
DTC C0161 00: Antilock Brake System (ABS) Brake Switch Circuit
Circuit/System Description
The electronic brake control module (EBCM) detects inputs from the brake pressure sensor, vehicle speed, and
a serial data message from the BCM that the brake pedal is applied. When the vehicle is stopping the EBCM
monitors for the brake pedal is pressed, with the brake pressure increasing and the vehicle is slowing down, or
when the vehicle is accelerating, the brake pedal is not pressed and brake pressure is not increasing.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• The vehicle speed is greater than 16 km/h (10 mph).
• The ignition voltage is greater than 9.5 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
• The EBCM detects the vehicle speed greater than 21 km/h (13 mph), the brake pedal is
Applied for 1 minute , and brake pressure is not increasing.
• The EBCM detects brake pedal is Released and the vehicle speed is decreasing with the brake
pressure is increasing.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• The EBCM disables the antilock brake system (ABS), traction control system (TCS) and
vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) for the duration of the ignition cycle.
• A DIC message and/or a warning indicator may be displayed.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
• The EBCM clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive
drive cycles.
Diagnostic Aids
The DTC C0161 00 can be set if the brake pedal is applied while accelerating.
Circuit/System Verification
1. Verify that DTC C0277, or C0278 is not set.
⇒If any of the DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle.

1. Stop Lamps Malfunction
Circuit/System Description
The brake pedal position sensor is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. The
brake pedal position sensor provides an analog voltage signal that will increase as the brake pedal is applied.
The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a 5-volt reference voltage to the brake
pedal position sensor. When the variable signal reaches a voltage threshold indicating the brakes have been
applied, the BCM will apply battery positive voltage to the stop lamps, transmission control module (TCM),
engine control module (ECM), and stop lamp relay coil side. The BCM also supplies the stop lamp relay coil
with ground. When the stop lamp relay receives battery voltage and ground from the BCM, the relay coil is
energized and the stop lamp relay switch contacts close applying battery voltage through the STOP/B/U/LPS
fuse to illuminate the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL).
Conditions for Running the DTC
Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
C0277 06
This DTC will set when the BCM detects an open or short to ground in the brake pedal position sensor signal
circuit for 0.5 seconds or greater.
C0277 07
This DTC will set when the BCM detects a short to battery voltage in the brake pedal position sensor signal or
low reference circuits for 0.5 seconds or greater.
C0277 09
This DTC will set when the BCM detects the brake pedal position sensor signal is changing faster than possible
under normal operating conditions.
Actions Taken When the DTC Sets
• The Service Vehicle Soon indicator is commanded ON.
• When DTC C0277 is set as current, the vehicle will not start.
• If the DTC sets while the vehicle is running, the BCM will activate the brake lights when the
vehicles transmission is not in the PARK position and the vehicle is not accelerating.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
• A history DTC will clear once 50 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
• A DTC will not clear the current status until the next ignition cycle.
Diagnostic Aids
Important: The stop lamps will not illuminate unless the ignition is in the ON position. For more detailed
information concerning stop lamp operation, refer to Exterior Lighting Systems Description and Operation.
If DTC C0277 09 is set, replace the brake pedal position sensor. If the DTC resets, replace the BCM.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake pedal position sensor.
2. Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the low reference circuit terminal A.
3. If⇒the test lamp does not illuminate, test the low reference circuit for an open/high
resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
3. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal C and ground.
If ⇒
less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an
open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
If ⇒
greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If
the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
4. Verify the scan tool BPP sensor signal parameter is less than 0.2 volts.
5.If ⇒
greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal B for a short to voltage. If
the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

energized and the stop lamp relay switch contacts close applying battery voltage through the STOP/B/U/LPS
fuse to illuminate the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL).
Conditions for Running the DTC
• DTCs P0722 or P0723 must not be set as current.
• DTC P0724 must not be set as current.
• With the brake switch high and vehicle speed less than 8 km/h (5 mph) then vehicle speed is
greater than 8 km/h (5 mph), but less than 40 km/h (25 mph) for less than or equal to 6
seconds, then vehicle speed is greater than 40 km/h (25 mph) for 7 seconds.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The TCM detects an open or short to ground on the signal circuit when the serial data message from the BCM
indicates the brakes are applied.
Actions Taken When the DTC Sets
• The TCM does not request the ECM to illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
• The TCM records the operating conditions present when the Conditions for Setting the DTC
are met. The TCM records this information as a failure record.
• Stores DTC P0719 in TCM memory.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
• A history DTC will clear once 40 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
Diagnostic Aids
Important: The stop lamps will not illuminate unless the ignition is in the ON position. For more detailed
information concerning stop lamp operation, refer to Exterior Lighting Systems Description and Operation.
Verify that the brake pedal position sensor is properly calibrated.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X400 harness connector at the transmission.
2. Connect a test lamp between the signal circuit terminal 6 and ground.
3. Ignition ON, command the stop lamp relay control ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should
turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
4.If ⇒the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high
resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
4. If all circuits test normal, replace the TCM.
