Traffic Engineering Test #1 Overview

i. The document is a traffic engineering test consisting of 3 compulsory questions and 1 bonus question testing knowledge of fundamental traffic and transportation engineering concepts. ii. The first question asks students to identify true or false statements regarding traffic characteristics, models, and parameters. The second question involves using flow-density relationships to analyze traffic conditions on a road segment. iii. The third question requires calculating average journey and running speeds as well as journey delay from provided vehicle travel time data. The bonus question involves using headway and segment length data to determine density, flow and speed.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING – TEST #1

Time: 1 hour
&
Date: 26 Okt 2019 DO YOUR BEST

NAME:……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

HP NO. : ……………………………………………………

INSTRUCTION:
i. Answer all questions briefly and concisely in the space provided.
ii. References are not allowed.
iii. Please observe examination code of ethics.
iv. This test paper consists of 3 compulsory and 1 bonus questions.

1. Write T for True and F for False in the box at the end of the statement. (20 marks)
a) According to recent JKR AT(J), there are three design vehicles: P, SU and WB-15 used
in Malaysian geometric design of roads.
b) Characteristics and behaviour of drivers are influenced by physical, environmental
and perception-reaction time factors.
c) Passenger Car Unit (PCU) for motorcyle for roadway segment in rural is lower than in
urban.
d) It is possible for Journey Speed to be equal to Running Speed.

e) Speed used in q=uk is the time mean speed (TMS) of traffic stream.

f) If q = 100u – 1.16u2, the jammed density for the traffic stream is 86.2 veh/hr.

g) For every value of flow (q) there will be two values of speed (u) and density (k).

h) Moving observer method (MOM) can be conducted on all types of road facilities.

i) At flow of 1800vph with speed of 60km/hr, the spacing of the vehicles is 30 veh/km.

j) Space mean speed (SMS) for vehicles travelling at 50, 60, 70 and 80 km/hr is
63.3km/hr.

2. A study on a road segment shows that at flow of 1200vph the speed was 30 km/hr and at flow
of 600vph the speed was 75 km/hr. If flow and density are linearly related:
a. Determine the capacity of the roadway;
b. Calculate the speed and density at flow of 1000vph; and
c. Skech the flow-density relationship and show all the respective values.
(50 marks)

3. Table below shows the vehicles journey and stopping time traversing 4km road segment in a
town.
Journey time (minutes) 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5
Stopping time (minutes) 1.6 2.8 3.6 4.5 5.2 6.1
Number of vehicles (n) 5 12 21 19 11 5

a. Calculate the average journey and running speed for the traffic stream above.
b. What is the average journey delay based on the journey speed if the free flow speed is
60km/hr?
(30 marks)

Bonus Question
An arial photo shows there are 6 vehicle on a 200m segment of road. Traffic data shows that the
average headway is 3 sec per vehicle. Determine the density, flow and speed for the traffic stream
on that particular road segment. (15 marks)
