definition
CHAPTER 6.3: MOMENT OF A FORCE
Moment is the measure of
the capacity or ability of the force
to produce twisting or turning
effect about an axis. This axis is
perpendicular to the plane
containing the line of action of the
force.
moment ABOUT A POINT
CHAPTER 6.3: MOMENT OF A FORCE
The moment of the force F
about point O, called the moment
center, is defined as:
𝑴𝑶 = 𝒓 𝒙 𝑭
moment ABOUT A POINT
CHAPTER 6.3: MOMENT OF A FORCE
The moment of a force about a point can
always be computed using the cross product in previous
equation. However, a scalar computation of the
magnitude of the moment can be obtained from the
geometric interpretation. Observe that the magnitude of
𝑀𝑂 is given by
𝑀𝑂 = 𝑀𝑂 = 𝑟 𝑥 𝐹 = 𝑟𝐹𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃
in which 𝜃 is the angle between r and F. Returning to
figure, we see that
𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃 = 𝑑
Therefore, the magnitude of 𝑀𝑂 is
𝑀𝑂 = 𝐹𝑑
moment ABOUT A POINT
CHAPTER 6.3: MOMENT OF A FORCE
The most efficient technique
for using the vector method (with
rectangular components) is the
following: (1) Write F in vector
form; (2) choose an r, and write it
in vector form; and (3) use the
determinant form of r x F to
evaluate 𝑀𝑂 .
moment ABOUT A POINT
CHAPTER 6.3: MOMENT OF A FORCE
In the scalar method, the
magnitude of the moment of the
force F about the point O is found
from 𝑀𝑂 = 𝐹𝑑 , where d is the
moment arm of the force.
VARIGNON’S THEOREM
Module iv: MOMENT OF A FORCE
The moment of a force about
a point is equal to sum of the
moments of its component about
that point.
MO = σ 𝒓 𝑥 𝑭
= 𝒓𝟏 𝒙 𝑭𝟏 + 𝒓𝟐 𝒙 𝑭𝟐 + 𝒓𝟑 𝒙 𝑭𝟑
MO = 𝐫 x 𝑭1 + 𝑭2 + 𝑭3 = 𝒓 𝒙 𝑅
