1. (a) What is Raft foundation?


(b) A structural engineer has decided to use a raft foundation for a building
Length of building 36 Ft. width 24 Ft.
9”x 9”columns are provided @ 12 ft. intervals
Designed slab of raft is spread for an additional 8 ft. and have a length 52 ft.
and width 40 ft.
Raft slab is 9” thick and Top R/F provided with 12 mm dia. @ 6” C/C net and
Bottom R/F provided with 10 mm dia. Bars @ 8” C/C net. 9” x 27” beams are
provided along grids 9” above and 9” under the slab which act as a key.

Draw (i) Plan and section of raft foundation in eight feet to an inch scale.

2. Draw a foundation details for a 9” thick external wall attached to a wash room
for normal soil.
SFL of wash room is 2” lower than the SFL of other areas. Consider foundation of
top level is equal to other area SFL. Width of the foundation is 14”. Internal walls
are tiled up to 7ft. from FFL. Syness (plinth) outside to be 2” and no Syness
(plinth) should be seen inside the toilet. Height of the foundation above ground
level is 1’-0” & depth below ground level is 2’-0”.
