Differences between Report Text and Explanation Text
Some text types are quite difficult to differ. Such a report and an explanation text have the
similarities in the result. Both are the result of an observation that has been done, so it is
not a fiction or essay. However, if they are analyzed carefully, the slight difference between
the two text types will reveal.
The purposes of the two texts are to give the information of the object. Both of a report and
an explanation text try to show rather than tell the reader about the factual condition of the
object. Readers by themselves will catch the impressive point of the object through that
showing writing style.
What makes different between report and explanation text is the scope of the written
object. If we talk about, e.g.: Rainbow. It belongs to a report text. It will talk about
information the circumstances or elements owned. In a rainbow, what are the elements
contain so as to forming a beautiful rainbow. In the other hand, explanation text describes
the occurrence of an event and why this phenomenon occurs. It will explain how the
rainbow could have happened and why it happened.
In short, report is a text which presents information about something. It is as a result of
systematic observation and analysis. While explanation is a text which tells processes
relating to forming of natural, social, scientific and cultural phenomena. Explanation text is
to say ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the forming of the phenomena. It is often found in science,
geography and history text books
