4 When a metal X is treated with cold water, it gives a basic salt Y with molecular formula XOH 3
(Molecular mass = 40) and liberates a gas Z which easily catches fire. Identify X, Y and Z and
also write the balanced chemical reaction involved.
Ans X- Na
Y- NaOH
Z- H2
Na + H2O → NaOH + H2
5 What would you observe when zinc is added to a solution of iron (II) sulphate? Write the 3
chemical reaction that takes place.
Ans Zinc is more reactive (more electropositive) than iron. Therefore Zinc displaces Iron from its
salt solution. The colour of ferrous sulphate is pale green, which turns colourless.
FeSO4 + Zn → ZnSO4 + Fe(s)
Light green Zinc sulphate(Colourless)
6 What is a homologous series? Explain with an example. 3
Ans A homologous series is a series of compounds with the same general formula, usually varying
by a single parameter such as the length of a carbon chain. Compounds within a homologous 1
series typically have a fixed set of functional groups that gives them similar chemical and
physical properties
For example, methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. are all part of the alkane
homologous series. 2
The general formula of this series is CnH2n+ 2. Methane CH4 Ethane CH3CH3 Propane
CH3CH2CH3 Butane CH3CH2CH2CH3.
It can be noticed that there is a difference of −CH2 unit between each successive compound.

Ans 1) The refractive index of water is 1.333, meaning that light travels 1
1.333 times as fast in vacuum as in water. Increasing refractive index
corresponds to decreasing speed of light in the material.so in diamond
the speed of light is less compared to water
2) refractive index of a medium is the ratio of speed of light in vacuum
to the speed of the light in given medium
RELATIVE REFRACTIVE INDEX OF DIAMOND WITH RESPECT TO 2
WATER
=(Absolute Refractive Index of Diamond with respect to Air) /
(Absolute Refractive Index of Water with respect to air)
= 2.41/1.33 = 1.80
Ans Refractive Index of a medium is the ratio of the speed of light in
vacuum to the speed of light in the given medium

8 a. “The breathing cycle is rhythmic whereas exchange of gases is a continuous 3
process”. Justify this statement.
b. What happens if the conducting tubes of the circulatory system develops a leak?
State in brief, how could this be avoided?
c. How does the opening and closing of the stomata take place?
Ans a) The breathing cycle involves inhalation and exhalation of air due to alternate expansion and
contraction of thoracic cavity. Thus it is a rhythmic process.
But exchange of gases takes place between the blood and each and every cell of the alveoli
by diffusion. It is a continuous process and is dependent on the concentration of the gases,
and unaffected by the breathing process.
(b) The circulatory system will become inefficient if it develops a leak. The number of platelets
will increase in order to develop a clot in the site of leakage.
(c) When water flows into the guard cells, the guard cells swell and the stomatal pore opens
up. When water moves out the guard cells shrink and the stomatal pore closes.
9 A blue color flower plant denoted by BB is crossbred with that of white color flower plant 3
denoted by bb.

Why do HCl, HNO3, etc., show acidic characters in aqueous solutions while solutions of
compounds like alcohol and glucose do not show acidic character?
Solution: a) Ethene:
Carbon tetrachloride:
b) Formation of Magnesium oxide:
When magnesium reacts with oxygen, the magnesium atom transfers
its two outermost electrons to an oxygen atom. By losing two
electrons, the magnesium atoms form a magnesium ion (Mg2+) and by
gaining two electrons, the oxygen atom forms an oxide ion (O2-).
Mg: +
→ MgO
Formation of Sodium oxide:
Two sodium atoms transfer their 2 outermost electrons to an oxygen
atom. By losing two electrons, the two sodium atoms form tow
sodium ions (2Na+) . And by gaining two electrons, the oxygen atom
forms an oxide ion (O2-).
c) Any two differences
OR
Release of H+ ion in water will make a compound acidic or non-acidic. Acids are the
substance which upon dissociating with water results in production of Hydrogen ions.
Some compounds show acidic character as they dissociate in the aqueous solution which
results in the production of hydrogen ions (acids like HCl, HNO3).
Compounds similar to glucose or alcohol do contain hydrogen elements but they do not
show signs of acidic nature. The fact that the hydrogen in them will not separate is like the
hydrogen in the acids. They will not separate to become hydrogen ions, on dissolving in
the water.
Hence dissociation of hydrogen gas will decide the acidic or non-acidic nature of a
compound.
15 What are the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration? Name some organisms 5
that use the anaerobic mode of respiration?
Ans.
Aerobic respiration Anaerobic respiration
1. The process takes place in the 1. The process takes place in the
presence of free oxygen absence of free oxygen.
2. The products of aerobic respiration 2. The products of anaerobic
are CO2, water, and energy. respiration are ethyl alcohol, CO2,
and a little energy.
3. The first step of aerobic respiration 3. Even in anaerobic respiration, the
(glycolysis) takes place in the first step takes place in cytoplasm
cytoplasm while the next step takes while the next step takes place in
place in mitochondria. mitochondria.
4. The process of aerobic respiration 4. The process of anaerobic respiration
takes place in all higher organisms. takes place in lower organisms,
muscle cells etc.
5. In this process complete oxidation of 5. In this process, the glucose
glucose takes place. molecules are incompletely broken
down.
The process of anaerobic respiration takes place in lower organisms like yeast, some
species of bacteria, and parasites like a tapeworm.

Contraception is an artificial method or other techniques, mainly used to prevent pregnancy
as a consequence of sexual intercourse.
a. Natural method: In this method, the main focus is to avoid the meeting of sperms
and ovum. This can be achieved by avoiding the mating from 10th to 17th day of the
menstrual cycle. During this period, there are high chances of fertilization as ovulation
is expected.
b. Barrier method: In this method, the meeting of sperms and ovum is avoided by using
a barrier. These barriers are available for males as well as for females. Condoms for
both male and female, diaphragms for female, cervical cap and contraceptive sponge
for females.
c. Oral contraceptives: In this method, pills are taken orally. These pills contain a small
portion of hormones that block the eggs so that fertilization doesn’t take place.
d. Implants: In this method, contraceptive devices like copper-T or a loop can be used
to block the meeting of sperms and ovum.
e. surgical method: In surgical methods, the fallopian tubes are blocked in females
(tubectomy) to stop flow of eggs and vas deferens is blocked in men to stop the flow
of sperms ( Vasectomy).
