Brother Polycarp: The Love of Youth
• Brother Polycarp loved the youth and he wanted to help them
by becoming himself a lay teacher and later a religious
educator. His retreat resolutions often mention his love for the
youth: “For my pupils. I will have a living charity, an ardent zeal
for their progress, a paternal affection and tenderness”

Brother Polycarp: The Virtue of Joy
• “It is not given to everyone to have a great sense of humor;
although one can laugh at jokes of others and specially smile.
And I propose to imitate this joy, because it has been proven
that today specially, it is one of things that attract more
efficiently the youth to the religious life. But to arrive at this
joy, real deep and Christian joy, one thing needed is
....PRAYER”

Brother Polycarp: Teachings on the Religious Spirit
(Roger Bosse, SC)
• “God chose what was weak in the world to shame the strong”
words that seem to be the very inspiration for religious life;
they may be said to form the backdrop for the Brother
Polycarp’s vision of religious life and of his advice to his
brothers.
• For Brother Polycarp, to be a religious educator-educator
was to live as a follower of Jesus. He expressed this
conviction by his “I am firmly resolved to imitate Jesus in all
things, and to live only for him”.

Brother Polycarp: Teachings on the Religious Spirit
(Roger Bosse, SC)
• He was a committed religious-educator “I shall always have my
students a spirited love, an ardent zeal for their advancement,
especially in virtue; and finally an affection, a fatherly tenderness. I
shall do all that I can in order to win over all of them to the Savior of
their souls”.
• Even his childhood memories were reminders of his great esteem
for the religious life, He remembered tending his flock on the
mountain ridges of Rocher de I’aire “ God has called us all to
holiness, and His grace is setting before us the path to heaven, just
like the footholds on the mountain sides are like steps for us to climb
ever higher”.

What does it mean to be a Brother of the Sacred Heart?
To rescue young people from ignorance, to prepare them for
life, and to give them a knowledge and love of religion.
In the spirit of evangelization that marked the period, the
founding of the Institute expressed a response to the needs
of the time and place on behalf of neglected children and
youth.

Brothers of the Sacred Heart
A group of men who consecrate themselves for the service of
God and the world through the education of children and youth,
especially the poor and in need of hope.
Founded in Lyon, France, 1821 by Fr. Andre Coindre, with a
noble intention to form them as Brothers in order to devote
themselves to educating the children and youth.
Since then, and with Br. Polycarp, the Second Founder, the
Congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, grew and
with the help of the Holy Spirit reached out to 32 countries
around the world.

Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Philippines
In 1959, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart from Canada generously
responded the call to come to the Philippines upon the invitation of
Bishop CLOVIS THIBAULT, the then Bishop of Davao who was an
alumnus of the school of the Brothers in Canada.
The first Canadian Brothers who came to the Philippines landed in
Digos and took over the administration of Holy Cross of Digos, which is
now our Cor Jesu College.
Since then and until the present, the Brothers together with their Lay
Collaborators have generously responded the call to educate children
and youth.
