Homework #5

This document contains 5 mechanics problems assigned as homework. It provides the details of each problem, including diagrams showing the system setup and relevant parameters like masses, distances, and spring/friction coefficients. Students are asked to determine accelerations, velocities, distances, and other metrics related to the motion of objects in each system.

1) The coefficients of friction between the 18-kg block

and the 3-kg platform BD are 𝜇𝑠 = 0.50 and 𝜇𝑘 = 0.40.
Determine the accelerations of the block and of the
platform immediately after wire AB has been cut.

2) A beam AB of mass m and of uniform
cross section is suspended from two springs
as shown. If spring 2 breaks, determine at
that instant
a) the angular acceleration of the bar,
b) the acceleration of Point A,
c) the acceleration of Point B.

3) The double pulley shown has a mass of

15 kg and a centroidal radius of gyration of
160 mm. Cylinder A and block B are
attached to cords that are wrapped on the
pulleys as shown. The coefficient of kinetic
friction between block B and the surface is
𝜇𝑘 = 0.2. Knowing that the system is at rest
in the position shown when a constant force
𝑃 = 200 𝑁 is applied to cylinder A,
determine
a) the velocity of cylinder A as it
strikes the ground,
b) the total distance that block B moves before coming to rest.

4) A slender 5-kg rod can rotate in a vertical plane about a pivot at
B. A spring of constant 𝑘 = 5000 𝑁/𝑚 and of unstretched length
10 cm is attached to the rod as shown. Knowing that the rod is
released from rest in the position shown, determine its angular
velocity after it has rotated through 90°.

5) A 4-kg block A is dropped from a height of 800 mm onto

a 9-kg block B which is at rest. Block B is supported by a
spring of constant 𝑘 = 1500 𝑁/𝑚 and is attached to a dashpot
of damping coefficient 𝑐 = 230 𝑁. 𝑠/𝑚. Knowing that there
is no rebound, determine the maximum distance the blocks
will move after the impact.
