Problem 1: Here are two vectors:

𝑎⃗ = (4.0 m)𝑖̂ − (3.0 m)𝑗̂ and 𝑏⃗⃗ = (6.0 m)𝑖̂ + (8.0 m)𝑗̂
What are
a. Magnitude and angle of 𝑎⃗?
b. Magnitude and angle of 𝑏⃗⃗?
c. Magnitude and angle of 𝑎⃗ + 𝑏⃗⃗?
d. Magnitude and angle of 𝑏⃗⃗ − 𝑎⃗?
e. Magnitude and angle of 𝑎⃗ − 𝑏⃗⃗?
f. What is the angle between the directions of 𝑏⃗⃗ − 𝑎⃗ and 𝑎⃗ − 𝑏⃗⃗?
Problem 2: The three vectors in figure have magnitude 𝑎 = 3 m, 𝑏 =
4 m and 𝑐 = 10 m and angle 𝜃 = 30o . What are
a. The x-component and y-component of 𝑎⃗?
b. The x-component and y-component of 𝑏⃗⃗?
c. The x-component and y-component of 𝑐⃗?

Problem 3: Here are three vectors in meters:

𝑑⃗1 = −3.0𝑖̂ + 3.0𝑗̂ + 2.0𝑘̂

𝑑⃗2 = −2.0𝑖̂ − 4.0𝑗̂ + 2.0𝑘̂

𝑑⃗3 = 2.0𝑖̂ + 3.0𝑗̂ + 1.0𝑘̂

What results from

a. 𝑑⃗1 ∙ (𝑑⃗2 + 𝑑⃗3 )

b. 𝑑⃗1 ∙ (𝑑⃗2 × 𝑑⃗3 )
c. 𝑑⃗1 × (𝑑⃗2 + 𝑑⃗3 )
Problem 4: In figure, the particles have charges 𝑞1 = −𝑞2 = 100 nC and 𝑞3 = −𝑞4 = 200 nC and
distance 𝑎 = 5 cm. What are the x and y components of the net electrostatic force on particle 3?

Problem 5: In figure below, four particles are fixed along an x-axis, separated by distance 𝑑 = 2 cm.
The charges are 𝑞1 = +2𝑒, 𝑞2 = −𝑒, 𝑞3 = +𝑒 and 𝑞4 = +4𝑒 with 𝑒 = 1.60 × 10−19 C. In unit-
vector notation, what is the net electrostatic force on (a) particle 1 and (b) particle 2 due to the other
particles?

Problem 6: In figure below, six charged particles surround particle 7 at radial distance of either 𝑑 =
1 cm or 2𝑑 as shown in figure. The charges are 𝑞1 = +2𝑒, 𝑞2 = +4𝑒, 𝑞3 = +𝑒, 𝑞4 = +4𝑒, 𝑞5 =
+2𝑒, 𝑞6 = +8𝑒 and 𝑞7 = +6𝑒 with 𝑒 = 1.60 × 10−19 C. What is the magnitude of the net
electrostatic force on particle 7?

Problem 7: In figure below, the three particles are fixed in place and have charges 𝑞1 = 𝑞2 = +𝑒 and
𝑞3 = +2𝑒. Distance 𝑎 = 6 𝜇m. What are the magnitude and direction of the net electric field at point
P due to the particles?
Problem 8: Figure below shows two concentric rings of radii 𝑅 and 𝑅 ′ = 3𝑅, that lie on the same
plane. Point 𝑃 lies on the central z-axis at distance 𝐷 = 2𝑅 from the center of the rings. The smaller
ring has uniformly distributed charge +𝑄. In terms of 𝑄, what is the uniformly distributed charge on
the larger ring if the net electric field at 𝑃 is zero?
