A Letter from Uncle John
November 17, 2007
Hi, Danny!
Tam uncle John from Alaska. How are you doing? I hope you are
well.
It’s very freezing cold here. I always wear boots and an overcoat.
But I am okay.
The enclosed picture is the Katmai Mountain. This mountain is
covered with snow as you can see. And the volcano inside the
mountain is still alive.
Iam living in a city called Anchorage. There are mountains around
the city. But I cannot see any volcanic mountains around the city.
There are many buildings instead, and they block my view.
Anchorage is the largest city in the state of Alaska. About 260,000
people live in the city. Its nickname is “The City of Lights and
Flowers.” There are thousands of buildings lighted by tiny white
lights throughout winter. And in the summer, there are many
beautiful flowers, which makes a view. Anchorage is an important
city.as well. It is the business center of Alaska. Most airplanes
enter Alaska via this city. I am working for an oil company here.

I miss you, Danny. Why don’t you come here during the vacation?
There are many nice places to go. We can go to H2Oasis. This is an
2%) indoor waterpark. And there are good slopes where you can ski
Anchorage is also home to a great deal of wildlife. You can see
moose, black bears, and brown bears in the Chugach State Park.
Tease your parents for a wonderful vacation in Alaska with me. e
Tam not sure how long it will take for you to get this letter. I hope
it will arrive soon. Enjoy the photo and please answer this letter.
Take care.

THE POSTCARD'S TRIP
~
Sending and receiving postcards are fun. You can send postcards to
almost all countries. Here is how to send a postcard.
First, select a postcard.
Postcards have different
pictures on the front.
Choose your favorite.
Second, write a
message to someone.
Write his or her name
and address on the
back. Third, put a stamp
on it. But that is just the beginning. Next, choose a way to mail it. Does
a mailman come near your home? Place your postcard in a roadside
box. Raise the flag. The mailman will take the card to the post office. Or
5 _do you live near a post office? Mail your postcard there. Do you live in a
city? There are many collection boxes in cities. You can use a collection
box. In the United States, there are over 40,000 post offices and 300,000
collection boxes. Just put the postcard into the collection box.

Then, how does the
postcard travel to your
friend? Your postcard
goes to a central post
office. It is sorted there.
Machines read the
postcard. They look at
the zip code. Then they
look at the state and
city. Next, the cards are put into a tray to get to the right place. After
about two days they arrive at the next post office. They are sorted again.
They are placed in the mailman’s bag or in his van, He delivers them to
the address. A lot of work goes into delivering your cards to the right
address.
Remember that it takes more time for cards to go from one country to
another. Cards mailed to different countries might take more than 10
days to arrive. But, the mail always gets there.

Signal Words and Sequence of Events
Look for signal words like first, next, last, before, after, and finally in
order to figure out the sequence. You can also use other word clues
in the text or your own knowledge to find the sequence.
There are two kinds of sequences in the story: how you send a
postcard and how the postcard travels to your friend. Look for signal
words. Write each step on each topic.
