For this module, pre-service students will be demonstrate teaching strategies that will develop
emergent literacy skills as well as the skills in the selection, development and use of age appropriate
instructional materials.

Intended Learning Outcomes:


At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

• demonstrate teaching strategies that promote literacy; and

• show skills in the selection, development and use of age- appropriate instructional resources
that will develop literacy, and higher order and creative thinking skills.

• Emergent literacy is the developmental process that begins at birth whereby children acquire
the foundation for reading and writing.

• “The term ‘emergent literacy’ is used to denote the idea that the acquisition of literacy is
best conceptualized as a developmental continuum, with its origins early in the life of a child,
rather than as an all-or-none phenomenon that begins when children start school”
