Math Study Guide Chi Square

The document describes two chi-square tests conducted to analyze data from surveys of Catholic and non-Catholic students' views on homosexuality. The first test found no significant difference between the groups. The second test on a 3x3 contingency table found the variables to be dependent.

1.

Catholic and Non-Catholic students were randomly interviewed to determine whether or

not they tolerated homosexuality. It was revealed that 17 out of 31 Catholics tolerated
homosexuality and 22 out of 32 non-Catholics favored homosexuality also. Test the null
hypothesis that the relative frequency of Catholic students who favored homosexuality is
the same as the relative frequency of non-Catholics who also favored homosexuality.
What do your results indicate?

Favored/Tolerated Not Favored Totals

CATHOLICS 17 14 31

NON-CATHOLICS 22 10 32

TOTALS 39 24 63

A. HYPOTHESIS:
Null Hypothesis (Ho): Views of the catholic and Non-catholic students about
homosexuality are independent.

Alternative Hypothesis: Views of the catholic and Non-catholic students about

homosexuality are dependent.

B. LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE: Alpha= 5% (0.05%)

C. TEST STATISTIC:

Favored/Tolerated Not Favored Totals

CATHOLICS 19.19 11.81 31

NON-CATHOLICS 19.81 12.19 32

TOTALS 39 24 63
Chi-Square Statistics= 1.2921

D. CRITICAL VALUE:
Df= (r-1) (c-1) = (2-1) (2-1) = 1
Critical Value= 3.841

E. DECISION: Chi-Square Statistic (1.2921) > Critical Value (3.841); Therefore, do not
reject the null hypothesis.
F. CONCLUSION:
The views of the catholic and non-catholic students about homosexuality are
independent.

2. Is the chi-square test significant for the following 3 x 3 problem?

FACTOR A
FACTOR B A1 A2 A3

B1 15 15 3

B2 13 14 14

B3 2 12 16

TOTAL 30 41 33

A. HYPOTHESIS:
Null Hypothesis (Ho): Variable A1 = Variable A2 = Variable A3 are independent.
Alternative Hypothesis: Variable A1 ≠ Variable A2 ≠ Variable 3 are not
independent.

B. LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE: Alpha= 5% (0.05%)

C. TEST STATISTIC:
A1 A2 A3

B1 9.52 13.01 10.47

B2 11.83 16.16 13.01

B3 8.65 11.83 9.52

Chi-Square Statistics = 18.8029

D. CRITICAL VALUE:
Df= (r-1) (c-1) = (3-1) (3-1) = 4
Critical Value= 9.488
E. DECISION:
Chi- square statistic (18.8029) < critical value ( 9.488); therefore, reject Ha.

F. CONCLUSION:
The variables that are presented are dependent.
