“Tuyom”
A Critique Paper
Poverty has always been an issue in the Philippines. Thus, many has featured it, like
“Tuyom”, a documentary by Kara David, which shows children that were forced to mature
quickly because of poverty. It focused on Carlo and his friends who, instead of enjoying their
weekends, are working to earn money. Despite the effort in catching sea urchins and gathering
firewood, they don’t earn much from these jobs.
The documentary depicts the harsh reality some children face as poverty was extremely
evident. The children wore old, dingy clothes and are skinny. The equipment they used for work
are not of best quality, yet their determination and perseverance are unwavering. “Tuyom” is the
bisaya term for sea urchins, which are spiky creatures that are hard to catch without technique.
Tuyom symbolizes the obstacles the children are facing, but through sheer effort, patience and
perseverance, success is not impossible.
Certain scenes were narrated in a formal manner, while casual language was utilized
during interviews. Subtitles were applied whenever the children talked in dialect so that the
viewers will understand what they said. Technically, the documentary was exemplary. The
cameras were appropriate to the situation like how waterproof cameras were used whenever the
children dived. Different camera angles were utilized to emphasize the scenes. Handheld,
Steady-cam, Panning, and Tilt Shots were the most used since the subjects are more mobile.
Also, background music was used, and it helps in enhancing the emotions portrayed. The flow
and transition of scenes are easily understood, the script is well-written, and the production is
well-executed.
Overall, the documentary is informative as its goals to enlighten and open the viewers’
eyes and heart on how poverty affects children’s lives were achieved. This also inspired others as
there is always a way with things if we really want to.
