Teacher Directions
If you are working on a poetry unit, this project is a nice one to
supplement your lessons. I use it as a culminating or anchor
activity, but you can assign it as a homework project as well.
I have included a handout for the requirements of the project,
which you can go over with your students, and a grading
checklist sheet (2 per page), which you can copy and hand out
to students to help them keep on track.

Poem with Illustration Page
You can use these or have students create their own.
This project takes a couple of weeks to complete.

Poetry Book Project
Create a poetry book by writing a poem for each of the following subjects:
_____1. A family member of your choice. Must contain a simile.
_____2. A friend that means the world to you. Must contain a metaphor.
_____3. A pet (past, present, or future). Must contain personification.
_____4. Your favorite food. Must contain imagery.
_____5. Your least favorite food. Must contain hyperbole.
_____6. Your favorite subject in school. Must contain an idiom.
_____7. Your least favorite subject in school. Must contain rhyme.
_____8. Your favorite color. Must contain alliteration.
_____9. Your favorite TV show. Must contain onomatopoeia
_____10. Your favorite type of music, song, or artist. Must contain rhythm.
_____11. A poem on the topic of your choice. Must contain symbolism.
You should include one poem from each of the following forms of poetry:
o Haiku
o Limerick
o Ode
o Free Verse
o Ballad
o Concrete
o Acrostic
o Narrative
o Cinquain
o Sonnet
The poems must be at least 5 lines long. (except for the haiku)
Not all poems must rhyme.
You must make a book of your poems. You must choose at least two of your
poems and create an original picture to go along with it.
