Displacement and Force in Two Dimensions-2

This document contains a worksheet with 5 questions about physics concepts involving displacement, forces, and vectors in two dimensions. The questions ask the student to: 1) graphically represent a displacement vector, 2) calculate the x and y components of a force vector, 3) calculate the resultant speed of a ferry crossing a river, 4) calculate the length of the third side of a triangle given the lengths of two sides and the angle between them, and 5) calculate the angle opposite one side of a triangle given the lengths of the two sides and the angle opposite one of the sides. The key provides the solutions and calculations for each question.

Worksheet-2
Answer the following questions. Show your calculations.

1. A man walks 400 m in the direction 45° north of east. Represent this vector graphically by
selecting a scale and drawing a coordinate system.

2. A force of 500.0 is represented graphically with its tail at the origin and the tip pointed in a
direction 30.0° above the positive x-axis. What are the x- and y-components of the vector?

3. A ferry with a velocity of 10.0 m/s travels from one side of the river to the other side at a point
directly across. When the current is down the river, the ferry’s captain directs the boat at an
angle up river so that the ferry arrives at the correct landing point. If the speed of the river
water is 2.00 m/s, what is the resultant speed of the ferry?

4. One side of a triangle is 4.0 m and another side is 3.0 m. The angle between the two sides is
142°. What is the length of the third side?

5. One side of a triangle is 4.00 m and another side is 3.00 m. The angle opposite the 4.00-m side
is 27.0°. What is the angle opposite the 3.00-m side?
