WRITING AN INTRODUCTION

I. FAMILIARIZATION

1. Brief overview of an introduction

The introduction
- familiarizes the readers with the subject, states the thesis statement and gives a clear
indication of the contents of the paper
- often includes some background information which helps the reader put the paper in
context.

2. Sample introduction
 Read the sample and discuss the questions that follow.
1. Introduction

Electronic commerce, or E-commerce, which refers to business transactions conducted via

the Internet, is probably the most significant trend in business at this time. According to the
Internet Data Corporation, by the year 2000, the operation of e-commerce created 2.5 million
jobs all over the world (Dang 2000). The total value of global e-commerce transactions
increased substantially during the last two years from approximately 171.4 billion USD in
1999 (Dang 2000) to 300 billion USD in 2000 and this figure is expected to reach 600 billion
USD by 2002 (Ung dung Internet trong kinh doanh, 2003). In the Asia-Pacific region in
particular, the development of e-commerce is significant. Dataquest, a company specializing
in information technology market research, reports that “business transactions done over the
Internet in the Asia-Pacific region will increase by 100 percent annually, to reach 40 billion
USD in the next three years. In 1999 specially, this figure was 5 billion USD.” (Dang 2000).
The Vietnamese Government is vitally aware of the need to develop e-commerce in the
country. In November 2000, Vietnam along with 10 other South East Asian countries signed
the “E-ASEAN Framework Agreement” which aims to boost e-commerce in the region
(Enos 2000). In the fourth session of the recent Tenth National Assembly Legislature, the
Vietnamese Minister of Trade, Truong Dinh Tuyen, highlighted e-commerce as a matter of
life and death for Vietnam’s future economic development (E-commerce spree in Vietnam,
2004).
The success of e-commerce in any country is heavily dependent on the business practices in
place and the infrastructure available to support its development. This paper discusses the
question of how ready Vietnam is to advance in e-commerce in terms of Vietnam’s current
business practices and infrastructure.
Task
1. Where do you find the background information, thesis statement, and content of the
paper?
2. Is the in-text referencing appropriately used?
3. Is the introduction effective?

II. LANGUAGE NOTES

Common features of introduction

- definition of the key term if necessary
- background information on the general topic
- statement of the thesis

III. PRACTICE
Practice 1: Rearrange the sentences in the following introduction into the correct
order. The title of the research paper is THE APPLICATION OF REMOTE SENSING IN
ESTIMATING EVAPOTRANSPIRATION

1) This paper will discuss the advantages of remote sensing and will propose the use of
remote sensing by the Ministry of Forestry in Thailand.
2) It offers us an excellent device to use in various fields: geology, forestry, water resources,
engineering, and land use.
3) Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area, or
phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with
the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation (Lillesand and Kiefer, 1979).
4) It is quite difficult to study and estimate the quantity of evapotranspiration from the very
large earth’s surface, but now we have found a new tool: remote sensing.
5) Evapotranspiration is water lost from this earth’s surface that man tries to study to control
in order that we can use it.

Practice 2: Edit the following introduction. The title of the research paper is “THE
CAUSES, EFFECTS, AND PREVENTION OF AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS IN THE UNITED
STATES”
An accident is “something that happens without a cause that can be seen at once, usually
something unfortunate and undesirable.” Nowadays in the United States, accidents are an
important cause of death, injury, and property damage. There are many kinds of accidents, such
as work accidents, home accidents, and public accidents. The statistics of the National Safety
Council estimates that at least $87.4 billion was the cost of all the accidents in the U.S. in 1985,
and $40.6 billion was the cost of motor vehicle accidents. Moreover, the death total – 99,000
people died accidentally in 1985 – includes about 50, 8000 who died in motor vehicle accidents.
From the number of deaths and the cost of damage, motor vehicle accidents are a cause of more
deaths, injuries and property damage than all other types of accidents. This paper deals with
motor vehicle accidents, which are a major problem in the United States. It discusses the
categories of such accidents and the ways to prevent alcohol-related traffic accidents.

Practice 3: Students display their own topic as well as necessary material for their
research and write a draft of an introduction for their topic.
