Introduction
Background of study

Central High School is located in the center of May Pen at exactly 58 Sevens Road. It

caters for about 2024 students. The health system of the school is very poor because it lacks a

stable school nurse. Also in the event if a serious health issue occurs with a student the student

has to be rushed to a neighboring hospital ‘May Pen hospital’. The students’ physical health is

very important because it contributes to the social and academic behaviours. It is upon seeing

this problem it has pushed the researcher into wanting to find out if students were diagnosed at

home using traditional medicine would it be more effective than using modern medicine in

which the health care giver provides at the clinic or pharmacy. The researcher has also been

wondering if most illness that affects the students and their families, which medicine is more

effective, modern or traditional medicine.

“The greatest assets of a country are healthy people.” The researcher realizes that most

persons know so little about traditional medicine and in order to educate the minds and get the

people to be healthier tradional medicine should be learned about and promoted within the

school.

5|Page
Relevance of topic

Medicine has evolved due to the advance in knowledge and advent of technology which

increases the effectiveness of modern medicine but regardless of this development many

countries or area of these countries have still been using traditional medicine and for this reason

it has intrigued the researcher to ascertain which medicine is more effective.

New technologies have always been the driving forces for major developments in

science. Medicine is no exception. New sequencing technologies have enabled us to begin

understanding the genomic and molecular origins of life and the reasons for disease; they are

also transforming evolutionary biology into a new, precise, molecular science that has enormous

promise for advancing medicine and public health.

The Problem Statement

Central High School is a rural high school of virtually 2024 students most of which are

growing up in rural families. This school is located in May Pen Clarendon at 58 Sevens Road.

The school contains several different family backgrounds which will help in getting different

opinions towards the problem statement “The effectiveness of modern medicine versus

traditional (herbs) medicine on the families of students in a rural high school in Jamaica and the

impact of using these either medicine.” And also to test the hypothesis “: Modern medicine is

more effective than traditional medicine for the health of Central High school students and their

families.”

6|Page
Purpose of Research

To find out why families prefer to use pharmaceuticals instead of herbs even though herbs are

widely available, has a lower cost, suitable for most chronic diseases and has proven to have

little or no side effect. The researcher also want find out which type of medicines is more

effective which is modern versus traditional and the impact of using the medicines. The

researcher specifically has chosen youths as an audience to find out if the drugs that are used

contributes to mental and physical health .It is important to study the medicine taken because it

can be traced back to ones behaviour and ones behaviour is liked to their actions. Youth violence

has been by far wreaking havoc in our society.

Research Questions

1. Why are persons turning away from modern medicine to aid in their physical health?

2. How effective is traditional against modern medicine?

3. How can students/people become educated about traditional medicine and the benefits it

offers?

7|Page
Educational Value

The research conducted will give insights to the families of these students on which

medicines are best suited for certain illnesses. These families will spend less money and may

handle the event of sickness within the family more quickly and more effectively.

Definition of technical terms

Literature Review

“Modern medicine helps us to live longer”, according to a journal posted at omiconline

2015, they argue that “Modern medicine has extended our lives and we can now treat disease and

illnesses with more ease. Traditional medicine involved herbs and plants which were not always

effective because persons still died of simple illnesses such as chicken pox and even common

cold.” Furthermore the article states that “Some traditional treatments work well but modern

medicine just takes these traditional treatments and makes them more effective. Modern

medicine can have side effects, but if taken with regulation and not in overdose, modern

medicine can be the most effective way to help yourself.”

However according to Edmund Pellegrino, professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics,

George Town University 1993, in his book The Virtues In Medical Practice implies that

“modern medicines are like fertilizers which are good at first but slowly shows their side effects,

deteriorating our health.”

Furthermore, Physiologist, Dr. Kennel Fenton 2008, argues that “Modern medicine can

treat long-term diseases much quicker and with less side effects as opposed to traditional.” With

modern medicine you can store it and have it in household whereas traditional medicine is not

house held and usually not storable.

However ,In an article published by the BBC of the year 2013, which states “traditional

medicine are less effective and have high risk due to inexperienced practitioners while on the

other hand modern medicine has been clinically tested and trialed and its effectiveness proven to

surpass traditional medicine by more than 65%.” In other words traditional medicine has many

different chemicals which may be harmful, while modern medicine chemical content is more

specific to the disease being treated.

10 | P a g e
Moreover, Dr. Earnest Baldwin in an article written in March of the year 2000 and

published by Springer, he stipulates that “modern medicine is ineffective, in that it makes you

more ill with all of its debilitating and dangerous side effects which causes people to make other

visits to doctor's office, only to prescribe more drugs.” Modern medicine is an endless cycle of

profit rather than actually saving lives.

However, Herbal medicine according to an article posted by Dr. David Winston, “It is

deemed important to recognize that most of these medical systems also see herbs as more than

their “active constituents". In Cherokee medicine, plants has a personality which when

appropriately matched with an ill patient gently stimulates the patient back to wholeness

(homeostasis). This vital force affects not only the physical body, but the mind and spirit as well

but healing process will be slower.”

According to Modern medicine vs. alternative medicine article posted by WHO on,

August 8, 2008 it states that an “international herbal medicine research, several practical

challenges arise in making accurate risk–benefit determinations. Typically, in American

pharmaceutical development, a step-wise process of drug testing occurs. They often come into

use by a process of trial and error, or over centuries.”

Accordingly, in clinical herbal medicine research there is rarely a strong preclinical basis

for dosing, and there are significant looming questions about product purity, quality, chemical

stability and active constituents at the time herbal medicine trials are proposed.” Furthermore,

“In recent years there has been a growing interest in traditional medicine and their relevance to

public health both in developed and developing countries.

He later on in the article spoke of the advantage of traditional medicine. ”This is due to

factors such has diversity, easy accessibility, broad continuity, relative low cost, low levels of

11 | P a g e
technological input, relatively low side effects and growing economic importance are some of

the positive features of traditional medicine. In this context, there is a critical need to mainstream

traditional medicine practice into public health care to achieve the objective of improved access

to health care facilities.”

In concluding, According to a book called Traditional and Modern medicine which was

published on July 28, 2014,” It states that Traditional and modern systems of medicine were

developed by different philosophies in different cultural backgrounds. They look at health,

diseases and causes of diseases in different ways. These differences bring different approaches to

health and diseases. However, both systems deal with the same subject – human being. The old

and modern arts of healing should exist together.”

Data Collection Sources

In the quest of ascertaining knowledge and understanding from the problem statement

which is “The effectiveness of modern medicine versus traditional medicine on the physical

health of students’ /family member at a rural high school in Jamaica.” An assessment was done

from a sample of students mixed from every grade. The research done was a quantitative one

therefore a combination of primary and secondary sources were utilized to collect the relevant

information needed. The primary source used was questionnaires, which is a list of questions

usually printed and issued to a sample population in order to gather information on a particular

topic. A total of 89 questionnaires were issued to different students. The secondary sources were

the internet and books. Articles, blogs, debate and books were the materials written by the

secondary sources found on the internet. The persons who wrote the books and articles are

experts in the field of studies or have conducted the research themselves which makes the

researchers use of sources credible and reliable. The primary sources used contributed to the

research in every way because the questionnaire gave insights to my sample group and the

responses allowed me to conclude on the effectiveness of the contrasting medicines.

Methodology

Eighty -nine questionnaires were given out upon which only six the researcher did not get

back on the day by which the researcher was collecting the questionnaires. The data was

collected within the middle part of October at any given time the researcher tried to find out if

the respondent was finish with the questionnaire. The data was collected from student from grade

nine to upper six. Questionnaires were hard and soft documents …hard copy for the small

children and soft copy (online questionnaire) to the older set if students.

Discussion of Findings

25 | P a g e
Discussion of Findings

The researcher interest was driven to investigate “The effectiveness of modern medicine versus

traditional (herbs) medicine on the physical health of students’/ family members who are at

Central high school between the ages 12-21 years old. A statement which most persons agreed

that modern medicine has a negative effect on their physical health or family member while a

minority did not think so. About three –quarter of the respondents stated that they or a family

member get sick often, Majority of the respondents stated that traditional medicine has less side

effects on their physical health, When the students where asked how long illness last whenever

they use traditional medicine majority stated that illness take a longer time to go away than

compared to modern medicine.

According to Cherokee medicine blog, each plant has a personality which when

appropriately matched with an ill patient gently stimulates the patient back to wholeness

(homeostasis). This vital force affects not only the physical body, but the mind and spirit as well

but healing process may be slower.”

Based on a statement to which most persons stated that modern medicine is more

effective than traditional medicine based on majority of the respondents while others differ in

views towards this statement.

According to Debate.org which gave a valid and credible insight to this controversial

issue. They stated that which coincides with the research results that we can now treat diseases

with more ease and that traditional medicine is less effective than modern medicine. However

conversely to this, Edmund D. Pellegrino professor of medicine implies that modern medicine

26 | P a g e
effectiveness decreases over time. The truth to this statement was proven because when students

were asked if the effectiveness of modern medicine decreased after persistent use, 80% of the

students stated that that its effectiveness decreased while the others stated it works all the time.

Dr. Kennel Fenton stated that “modern medicine has less side effects than traditional medicine

and can treat diseases with more ease” this statement was not agreed to when the question asked

by the researcher; Most of the students stated that Traditional medicine has less side effects than

compared to modern medicine .However in a follow up question it was shockingly conformed

that the student prefer modern medicine over traditional ,this was discovered by virtue of the

question “If you had an illness which medicine would you use to assist you?”

To the question “which medicine is more safely administered?” All of the students stated

that modern is more safely administered and also when they were asked to comment majority

stated that using traditional medicine has high risks. They also stated that modern medicine are

distributed by persons who are highly qualified in the health care sector. This supports the BBC's

claim that “traditional medicine has high risk due to untrained practitioners.” Students were also

asked to give a reason for their selection which all stated that modern medicine is designed and

has been tested, similar to what the BBC has said “modern medicine has been clinically tested

and trialed.”

Supporting Dr. Earnest Baldwin's claim that “modern medicine makes you more ill with its

debilitating and dangerous side effects which causes patients to visit the doctor’s office again

only to be prescribed more drugs” in an article he wrote in 2000 published by Springer, is a

questions the students were asked:

27 | P a g e
“Do you think modern medicine industries are more about making money than actually saving

lives?” Majority stated that modern medicine industries are more about making money than

actually saving lives and a follow up question was asked majority of the respondent stated they

had to buy more medication.

According to Modern medicine vs alternative medicine article posted by WHO

on, August 8,2008 it states that an “international herbal medicine research, several practical

challenges arise in making accurate risk–benefit determinations. Typically, in American

pharmaceutical development, a step-wise process of drug testing occurs. They often come into

use by a process of trial and error, or over centuries.” However, when the question was asked

most of the respondents do not take both Traditional and modern medicine together they took it

separate and most of them prefer modern medicine. They also claimed it is more effective.

He later on in the article spoke of the advantage of traditional medicine. ”This is due to

factors such has diversity, easy accessibility, broad continuity, relative low cost, low levels of

technological input, relatively low side effects and growing economic importance are some of

the positive features of traditional medicine. In this context, there is a critical need to mainstream

traditional medicine practice into public health care to achieve the objective of improved access

to health care facilities.” However, when the question was asked “Why do you think modern

medicine is used more than traditionally or traditional than modern?”

 The urgency of the issues is by far been not examined or properly noticed. It is very

important to know which medicine is better for the health of students due to the fact that

these children will grow up to be the future generation. The students will contribute to

making Jamaica a place to live, work and raise family. There are several implications of

using modern medicine due to the many side effects of using it, taking into consideration

28 | P a g e
both physical and mental effect on the person using the drug. Traditional medicine has

implication also such as herb not given for the correct illness, slow recovery, over dosage etc.

There are so many more implication that has not being mentioned for both traditional and

modern medicine. Recommendation to the implication

 The Ministry of Health should educate the population on the effects of modern medicine and

the uses of traditional medicine.

 Traditional medicine should be promoted more by the media, this is a way to reach the

audiences because both the young and the old utilizes the services offered by the media. This

will not just strengthen the medical system it will activate our history that we have long

forgotten. This will work because it is a modern world and almost everyone have access to a

gadget this will therefore allow the spreading of information .

Precautionary measure:

 The wider population should consult a medical doctor before consuming traditional medicine

and stop depending only on modern medicine.

29 | P a g e
30 | P a g e
Analysis of Findings

31 | P a g e
Analysis of findings

The effectiveness of modern medicine verses traditional medicine on the physical health

of students at Central High school was investigated. Based on the findings of study, it can be

deduced that Central high School sample population twenty percent of the junior students were

ages twelve to thirteen, thirty-five percent of the senior students range from the ages fifteen to

seventeen and also forty-five percent of the pre-university students ranges from ages seventeen

to twenty-one who answered the questionnaires. See figure 1. The bulk of the information was

collected from the mature set of students therefore the data collected would have been a credible

one.

To the question asked, to ascertain the type of medicine the student's families used to

counter the illnesses, 70% of the students stated they used modern medicine while 16% stated

they used traditional medicine and 14% stated they used both medicines see figure 7.

60% of the respondents who used modern medicine are a part of single parent families, while

15% nuclear families and 20% extended families see figure3. 90% of the 16% who stated they

used traditional medicine are a part of extended families. The students were asked to comment

on how long the illnesses persist while taking modern and/or traditional medicine. 70% stated

while taking both medicine the illnesses took a short period of time to subside while 16% stated

while using traditional medicine the illnesses didn’t persist too long and 14% stated the same for

modern medicine. 90% of the respondents said they think modern medicine is more effective

than traditional medicine, most of which stated this was due to modern medicine being highly

specific. The remaining 10% stated that traditional medicine is more effective which was due to

it having less side effects compared to modern medicine whose side effects made one feel more

ill.

32 | P a g e
Majority of the respondents were apart of both single and extended families while

minority was a part of the nuclear families. This implies that some students who are from the

extended families would have been using traditional medicine more than modern medicine.

Hence, the extended families would most likely be introduced to traditional medicine by their

grandparents and other generations before theirs. The single parent family is a family that will

more likely to face severe challenges regarding their financial aid .This therefore makes them

more successible to health issues. Thirty percent (45%) of the respondents stated that they got

sick often and the remaining forty percent (30%) stated that they got sick randomly and twenty-

five percent (25%) got sick very often. See figure 3.

It can be deduced that the respondents think modern medicine is more effective than

traditional medicine even though they all claimed that it had a lot of side effects. Majority of the

respondents stated that they use modern medicine and minority stated that they use traditional

medicine. See figure7. When the students were asked “Does modern medicine affects the

physical health of you or a family member?” 75% of the respondents said yes and 25% of the

respondents said no. On examining this question it can clearly show that the side effect of these

drugs have been doing harm to a large amount of respondents or their family. When the

respondents were asked “Have you ever consider taking traditional medicine to help your

condition?” majority said no. follow up question was asked “If you had a choice which medicine

would you choose to assist with your illness?” all of the respondents said modern medicine . This

implies that the respondents prefers modern medicine because they think it is safer and is a more

reliable source because it is given to them by doctors or by pharmacy if it isn’t a prescription

drug meaning over the counter . Traditional medicine on the other hand is widely available over

people might over dose and is slower.

33 | P a g e
“Do you think modern medicine industries are more about making money than actually

saving lives?” 88% percent stated that modern medicine industries are more about making

money than actually saving lives and furthermore when respondents. This is so due to the fact

that when people buy a medicine to treat one health issues they end up have to buy more drugs to

get rid of the problems created by the side effects. In cases where the side effects are not intense

the drug is normally followed up because it does not get rid of the illness.

100% of the respondents stated that modern medicine is more safely administered than compared

to traditional medicine. This was the result of the question “Which medicine is more safely

administered and why?” The respondents claimed that Modern medicine works better and faster

and it is safer because it is given to them by people who are qualified.

Based on all the researcher has gathered people prefer modern medicine because they know more

about it the researcher thinks that if they are made aware of it they would have a different

response because it cheaper and easier to get because it can be find anywhere in nature. The

researcher personally believes that modern medicine does more bad to health and makes its

patient’s drug dependent. Most modern drug is made with theses natural ingredients however are

processed too much with chemicals so instead patient consume more unnatural chemicals that

are given to them by health care personals.

As a nation moving forward towards healing the world and building our culture we should

promote mother earths healing wonders “Traditional medicine.” 50% of the students stated that

herbal television show is the best medium to promote the benefits of (herbs) which is majority

and another 30% stated that annual health campaigns is the best medium to promote the benefits

of traditional medicine See figure 8.

34 | P a g e
Conclusion, limitations and

Recommendation

35 | P a g e
Conclusion, limitation and Recommendation

After the data was collected and analyzed from both primary and secondary sources such

as questionnaires, online journals, articles and blogs. It can therefore be concluded that modern

medicine is more effective than traditional medicine. Modern medicine has several draw backs

because it is known to give a lot of side effects, therefore in my views traditional medicine is

better for the students mental and physical health even though healing process may take a longer

time.

The questionnaire is an effective method because it is a means by which the researcher

can use to get detailed information from a large audience and also it allows the respondent to

have confidentiality and a high –level of privacy.

86 questionnaires were issued to some sixth formers and the other questionnaires were

done by the students using the schools computer .There were several issues because not all the

students got the chance to do the questionnaire that’s about half of the student population and not

the view of all the student. Some questionnaires were unreturned, out of 86 only 72 were

returned. It can therefore be seeing that the accuracy of the research on this sample

population may not be as reliable as it should. The researcher could not give questionnaires to all

students due to financial circumstances. This will definitely affect the results obtained from this

research.

36 | P a g e
Based on the results obtained from the sample population, the following

recommendations may be made:

 The Ministry of Health should educate the population on the effects of modern medicine and

the uses of traditional medicine.

 Traditional medicine should be promoted more by the media ,this is a way to reach the

audiences because both the young and the old utilizes the services offered by the media .This

will not just strengthen the medical system it will activate our history that we have long

forgotten.

 The wider population should consult a medical doctor before consuming traditional medicine

and stop depending only on modern medicine.

 There should be a special day to highlight the uses of herbs in our country inoder to carve the

minds of the young this will in return help the economy and save more lives while building

our culture and history.

 More research and also more local programs should be implemented. This should be done

investigate our local herb so that the useful chemicals that the plants have can be extracted

and isolated from the ones that may be potentially dangerous.

 All traditional medical dealers should obtain at list Senior school certificate (WAEC) in order

to be able to read, write and make use of the libraries.

 Development of curriculum that could be used by elementary and post-secondary school on

the topics of traditional medicine.

37 | P a g e
 Professional development and conferencing of healers/elders through accessing universities,

health facilities and stakeholders of traditional medicine that support the elders/healers desire

to enhance their skills learn from one another and develop solid networks.

 All traditional medicine has to fulfill the same uniform standards, tests and trails before being

made available to the public.

 More resources and infrastructure need to be committed and promote the use of safe and

efficacious traditional medicines.

 There is a need for a campaign that raises awareness of the rights of patients to adequate care,

treatment and support by traditional healers.

 It is vital that the traditional healing profession be regulated and be brought into the ambit of

current legislation.
