Spellwriting 101
We see a lot of people asking for spells on the page, but we rarely hand them out. Why? Because
spells written by your own hands are so much more powerful and will work so much better. But how
do you write a spell?
That is the question, one that many of you struggle with. To be able to know how to write a spell you
must first understand what a spell is, and what it consists of.
Magic spell: The English Oxford Dictionary states the following:
1. A form of words used as a magical charm or incantation
2. A state of enchantment caused by or as if by a magic spell.
If we go to Wikipedia, we find the following bit of text:
“A spell or charm is a set of words, spoken or unspoken, which are considered by it’s user to
invoke some magical effect.”
We can state that it is commonly agreed upon that it involves words, spoken or unspoken.
So why then the use of herbs, oils, crystals and a lot of other tools of the craft?
The answer is not as simple as it seems. Each herb, oil, crystal and whatever else we decide to use
carries properties that can aid us in our spellwork. But that is not all of it. The basis of every spell we
cast is intent. Our spells are only as strong and powerful as our focus on the task at hand. If we try to
cast a spell to for example cure a headache, yet keep thinking about our grocerylist for our trip to the
store later, then this spell is never going to work, no matter how many tools and crystals we use to
aid the spell.
So? So we need to get our heads into the game when we are attempting spellwork. And we can use
the above to help us, but it won’t carry out the work for us if we don’t keep our minds, our intent on
the job. We use the herbs and crystals and whatnots for their properties, but also to focus our own
minds to the task at hand. By going through the motions of gathering our supplies, meeting out how
much we need and making sure we have everything in reach for the spellcasting, we focus our minds
on the work that we will be doing. By preparing each ingredient we take one step further away from
our daily woes. We stop thinking about that grocery list, instead we think of which herb will serve us
best for the spell we are trying to construct. If we go back to the example of curing a headache, then
Lavender and Basil are the first ones that spring to mind. So let’s roll with those. When we look at
crystals, Amethyst has properties to help with the pain relief of headaches as they are very spiritual
crystals. Another good one would be Selenite, which helps with unblocking stagnant energy, helping
with creating a smooth flow of positive energy. A stress related headache is quite often an energy
blockage, so the Selenite would definitely be useful here.
Okay, so far we have some herbs, some crystals, what else? How about some candles? I love using
candles with my spellwork, so candle hunting I go. Green candles are associated (amongst other
things) with health, so they are a good shout. Blue candles are associated(again amongst other
things) with healing and as this is a spell about healing rather than health I would go for a blue one
rather than a green one. Unless Im out of coloured candles, in which case I grab a white one, which
can substitute for any other colour when needed. To give the candle an extra kick you can
dress/anoint it with an oil if you like, in this case seeing as we already have our Lavender
represented(Lavender is my go to oil for just about anything) let’s go with Mint. Another thing you
can do is carve the candle to specifically dedicate it to the spell, or to the person for which you are
casting the spell. If I was to use this candle for myself I could carve my date of birth into it, a sigil that
I have made for myself or a rune. If you want to keep it simple, just go by the date of birth, or just the
name of the person. Dressing a candle is almost a ritual in itself so when you do this, be sure to really
keep your mind focussed at the task at hand and the reason behind it.
So we have our herbs, crystals and even a candle, I would say we are pretty set for our spell, except
for the actual words. Now these words can be as elaborate and classy as you like. They just have to
be your words, as this is your spell. That is why it is so important to write your own spells, build them
from the ground on up, because every step of the way makes this into your spell, tapping into your
power. Personally, I’m not very good with fancy wording, and tend to just simply ask for things the
way I would ask something of another person. But most of the time that approach makes people feel
like it is not really a spell that is cast then. So for the sake of this article I am going to try my best to
come up with something fancy. Rhyming though not necessary is a favorite way of those writing
spells. Just try not to try too hard, simple wording will work just as well as elaborate ones, just be
yourself and the words should come easily.
“To soothe the pounding in my head,
The following lines will be said.
Please make my head pound no more,
Send the tension out the door.
My head again pain free
As I have spoken, so mote it be!”
Told you, I am not very good with writing spells, but that is besides the point. These are my words,
which gives them power. I have written this with the intent of curing my headache, and that is the
power that now rests within this simple rhyme.
Now we have everything that we need, time to get to business.
You can cast a circle if you want to go all out, but personally for a simple spell like this I would not go
that far. I would simply find a quiet spot, sit down and take a few cleansing breaths before starting.
Now simply light your candle, keeping in mind the spell you are about to cast. Put your crystals next
or in front of it and grab your herbs. For most workings I keep dried herbs on hand, but with some I
use fresh ones. In this particular case I would go for dried herbs, which at this point I would toss into
a mortar and pestle and grind them together. During the mixing and grinding I would chant our
newly written spell , atleast 3 times or as many more times as I feel necessary. When you are done,
place your candle somewhere safe where it can burn up, and carry your herbs to the kitchen where
you can make them into a tincture to rub on your temples, or my personal favourite, mix in with your
favourite tea herbs and make yourself a nice relaxing cup of tea. The crystals that you used during
your spellwork can help you by placing them in your pockets while you go on your daily business or if
you have time to lie down and relax you can place them on or next to your head(underneath your
pillow also works) while you close your eyes for a while.
Back to the start of this article.
We learned that a spell is a combination of words spoken or unspoken with the intent of causing a
magical effect. Intent being the keyword of that statement. No matter how many crystals and herbs
you use, your intent is what gives this or any spell it’s true power. The rest is just there to boost your
power, to help your focus. That is what rituals are for aswell. Every step of a ritual that you
undertake, go through, is to get every single cell of your body, mind and spirit pointed towards that
which you are trying to achieve. With each step you take you leave your daily worries behind and get
into the right state of mind for your workings. Each step raises your energy, your power which
together with your intent is that what manifests your spell into being. So while intent is the basis of
everything, you can use pretty much anything and everything else to aid you. When you are wanting
to do some more advanced workings you have to further your research and incorporate things like
moonphases, time of day, time of year and a million other things as everything can be of influence on
your spellwork. But as this article is just meant as basic introduction into writing your own spells I
have left everything but the mere basics out of the scope.
This is simply one way of writing a spell, and a very basic one at that.
Just like there are millions of different people, there are also millions of different ways to write and
perfom a spell. When writing a spell write it for yourself and stay true to your heart and you can’t go
wrong. Just trust your instincts, combine it with your studies and you will write the perfect spells
within no time.
Brightest Blessings and Good luck!

Spell: A simple spell to cure a (tension) headache
Date first used: 1st of May 2018
Supplies needed: Crystals: Amethyst, Selenite
Tools: Candle holder, mortar Herbs: Basil, Lavender
and pestle, athame, paper
with chant. Candle: Dark or Light Blue preferable
Oil: Mint
“To soothe the pounding in my head,
Chant: The following lines will be said.
Please make my head pound no more,
Send the tension out the door.
My head again pain free,
As I have spoken, so mote it be!”
How to cast:
Start by carving the date of birth (or sigil) into the candle for the
person this spell is for. After that dress the candle in the oil and
place in holder. Place crystals on either side of candle of in front.
Light the candle and start chanting, continue the chant while mixing
the herbs in the mortar and pestle, while giving them a good grind.
Make sure to chant atleast 3 times, though feel free to continue for
as much as feels necessary. When the chants are done and the herbs
are mixed, place the candle somewhere safe to let it burn out. Use
the herbs in a tincture to rub on the temples or ingest them in the
form of tea. Crystals can be carried in pockets or simply returned to
their shelves for future use.
Spell: A simple spell to cure a (tension) headache
Results, Thoughts, Notes:
Spell was cast during the pink full moon, this might have had an
effect but this wasn’t researched.
This was cast without cleansing beforehand and without casting a
circle. Cleansing breaths however were taken.
The recommended Selenite was replaced with a Clear Quartz as I
didn’t have a Selenite on hand.
A light blue candle was used rather than a dark blue one, it was the
only one I could get my hands on. I inscribed my date of birth on it
as this spell was to cure my own headache. After anointing it I
placed it back in it’s holder.
I ended up chanting the chant 5 times, as 3 felt too little and 5 felt
right.
The candle has been placed somewhere safe after spellcasting and
burned up nicely.
The herbs were mixed in with mint for flavour and used in a tea,
honey added for sweetening.
After about an hour and a half of ingesting of tea the headache did
disappear, which was a welcome feeling as previous painkillers were
not able to subdue it for 3 days.
A successful outcome, though headache did return for a short while
the day after, no where near as bad as it had been before. Will
definitely be using this again in the future.
