Topic: Past Simple Revision

Teaching aids/ Materials: Song, Hand-outs, Blackboard, Chalk;

Aim: to be able to use the Past Simple correctly in everyday interactions;

Lesson Objectives:

1) to be able describe/talk about past actions and activities;


2) to be able to use Past Simple in real-life situations of communication;
3) to identify and use parts of speech;

Competences: 1.1 Identify essential information from short recorded fragments related to predictable
everyday situations, which they are clear, slow-paced and articulated.
2.2 Participate in short verbal interactions with support from the teacher.
3.1 Identify information from lists and simple texts (fliers, menus, timetables, advertising)
3.2 Select information from a clearly-structured text (newspaper articles, brochures) in
which numbers and names play an important role

Anticipating student’s problems:


 some students might need further help and extra indications in solving the tasks and they may also
need some of these indications to be given in Romanian;
 some students might feel nervous and reluctant to participate in the activity, so they may need
assistance;

Aspects I particularly need to be aware of: the students to understand everything the teacher says
and asks;

Greetings.
1.Organising The teacher greets the class and asks the

After they have answered, the students will be
given a few minutes to think of three sentences:
one false and two true about themselves. They
can write them or they can tell them. The
colleagues have to guess.
The teacher tells the students that they are
going to do some review on the previous learnt
tense the Past Simple. To prepare the
background for the lesson the teacher shows the
students pictures of different activities and places
and randomly asks the students to review the
past simple-tense questions they learnt from a
previous class.
For example,
The teacher shows the school picture and asks
T: Were you at school last Monday?
Ss: (Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.)
3. Lead-in
T: Where were you yesterday? BB STT 7 min.

in the picture)
T: What did you do there? etc.
Ss: (Answers must related to the activity
shown in the picture)
Note: Students must answer the questions in
“Past simple tense” related to the pictures that
the teacher shows.
The question will be answered by other students
as well and will be written on the BB, underlining
the verbs in the past form.

4.Presentation The teacher asks the students to remember BB TTT 7 min.

The teacher has written on the BB the use of
the Simple Past in order for the students to
remember and correctly use them.

 we use the Simple Past to talk about


completed actions in the past;
e.g. I watched a movie yesterday.

We form the Past Simple:


- with regular verbs: infinitive + -ed
- with irregular verbs: 2nd column of the
table of the irregular verbs;

The teacher tells the students that they are
going to receive a hand-out with the lyrics of a
song on it but with missing words. The song is
Who knew by P!nk. The words missing are there
but they have to put them in the Past Simple. The

After the song is played two times the teacher
checks the answers with the students to make
sure they wrote the correct forms of the verbs.
The teacher gives each students a worksheet
with the story The Happy Man on it. The teacher
allows the students 1 minute to skim the text and
check for unknown words, some words are even
translated at the bottom of the page. Then the
students have to underline the verbs in the Past
Simple. The teacher names different students to
read it.
At the end of the text the students are assigned 6
questions based on the text in order to check
their comprehension of it and an exercise where

verbs in the Past Simple.
The students are given 7 minutes to answer the
questions. After the time is up the teacher names
a students to answer the first question and that
student has to name another one to answer the
next question. In this manner the interaction
between students is increased.
After they checked the answers the teacher will
name different students to answer one word at a
time.
