Spelling Bee Math Words

This document defines 30 mathematical terms across three levels of difficulty: Easy, Moderate, and Hard. The Easy terms define basic shapes and concepts like variables, vertices, arcs, chords, and pi. The Moderate terms include definitions for algebra, circumference, quadrants, and rhombi. The Hard terms provide explanations for more advanced concepts such as tessellations, parallelograms, coefficients, and properties related to angles, expressions, and triangle congruence.

EASY

1. variable A symbol that represents a quantity.

2. vertex the point at which the rays of an angle, two sides of a polygon, or the edges of a
polyhedron meet.

3. arc Connected portion of a circle.

4. Chord: A segment joining two points on a circle.

5. Reciprocal – The multiplicative inverse of a number. For example, 2/3 is the reciprocal of 3/2.

6. Reducing – Changing a fraction into its lowest terms.

7. Volume – The amount which can be held, as measured in cubic units

8. Radius – A line segment where the endpoints lie one at the center of a circle and one on the
circle.

9. Average: The average is the same as the mean. Add up a series of numbers and divide the sum by
the total number of values to find the average.

10. Pi: Pi is used to represent the ratio of a circumference of a circle to its diameter,

MODERATE
11. Algebra: The branch of mathematics that substitutes letters for numbers to solve for unknown
values.

12. Circumference: The complete distance around a circle or a square.

13. Equilateral: A term used to describe a shape whose sides are all of equal length.

14. Quadrant: One quarter (qua) of the plane on the Cartesian coordinate system. The plane is
divided into 4 sections, each called a quadrant.

15. Quotient: The solution to a division problem.

16. Rhombus: A parallelogram with four sides of equal length and no right angles.
17. prism A three-dimensional figure made up of two parallel congruent faces and lateral faces that
are parallelograms.

18. Commission - A fee paid for services, usually a percentage of the total cost.

19. symmetry A one-to-one correspondence in size, form and arrangement of parts, related to a
plane, line or point

20. trapezoid A quadrilateral that has exactly one pair of parallel sides.
HARD
21. Tessellation: Congruent plane figures/shapes that cover a plane completely without overlapping.

22. Parallelogram: A quadrilateral with two sets of opposite sides that are parallel.

23. arithmetic: the part of mathematics that studies quantity, especially as the result of combining
numbers (as opposed to variables) using the traditional operations of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division

24. coefficients: the factors of the terms (i.e. the numbers in front of the letters) in a mathematical
expression or equation,

25. Algebraic expression A group of numbers, symbols and variables that express a single or series
of mathematical operations (e.g., 2x  4  16y )

26. isosceles triangle A triangle that has two or more congruent sides.

27. associative property Addition: changing the grouping of terms in a sum without changing the
sum. Multiplication: changing the grouping of factors in a product without changing the product.

28. commutative property Addition: the addition of terms in any order obtains the same sum.
Multiplication: the multiplication of terms in any order obtains the same product.

29. Supplementary angles – Two angles that when combined the sum equals 180°.

30. Congruent: Objects and figures that have the same size and shape. Congruent shapes can be
turned into one another with a flip, rotation, or turn.
