CDI 101 – Vice and Drugs Education and Control

Discuss the following:

1. What is Drug Education?

 It involves teaching people about legal and illegal drugs. It is concerned in providing
information, exploring issues and helping people to develop their confidence and
ability to make a healthy lifestyle.

2. What are Drugs?

 Drugs are any substance that is either natural or synthetic that stimulates depresses
or irritates specialized cells. It is any substance that brought about physical,
psychological and behavioral change to the person taking it.

3. Discuss the History of drug abuse. (International/Philippine Setting)

 In 1972, the drug problem was just at its incipient stage, with only 20,000 drug users
and marijuana as the top choice among the users in the Philippines. This was the
drug scenario when Republic Act 6425, otherwise known as the “Dangerous Drugs
Act of 1972” was approved on March 30, 1972.

 In 1974, the Inter-Agency Committee on Drug Abuse Prevention Education was


formed to strengthen the relationship among the various agencies and the
Dangerous Drugs Board.

 In 1982, another procedural amendment to RA 6425 was made through Batas


Pambansa 179 which itemized prohibited drugs and its derivatives. Narcotics
preparations such as opiates, opium poppy straw, leaves or wrappings, whether
prepared for use or not were classified as dangerous drugs.

 In 1995, the DDB launched “Oplan Iwas Droga” which has become the national
flagship program on drug abuse prevention. A mascot was created to stand as an
icon or representation of the program. The mascot was named KID Listo. KID being
an acronym for Kalaban ng Ilegal na Droga.

4. Define the following:

A. Prescriptive drugs
 Drugs requiring written authorization from a doctor to allow a purchase.
 They are prescribe according to the individual’s age, weight, and height and
should not be taken by anyone else.

B. Over-the-counter drugs

 An OTC drug is a product marketed for any use by the consumer without the
intervention of a healthcare professional.
 These are non-prescription medicine which may be purchased in any pharmacy
or drugstore without written authorization of a doctor.

C. Self-medication syndrome

 This is found in users and would be users of drugs whose source of information
are people or literature other than doctors, pharmacist, and health workers.
