HOW DURYODHANA EXPRESSED HIS PERPLEXITY AS SOON AS HE SAW
PANDAVA’S ARMY?
As Dhrtarastra asks Sanjaya:-
sloka 1:-
sanjaya , gathered on the holy land of kurukshetra, eager to fight, what did my
sons and sons of pandu do?
sanjaya replies:-
sloka 2:-
dhrstradyumna is the supreme commander of pandava's army, son of
drupada, born to kill dronacharya has arranged the strategic formation of the
army on the first day.
as soon as he saw the pandava's army skillfully arranged by dhrstadyumna,
duryodhana became stunned due to revulsion. duryodhana spoke the
following words to dronacharya in a commanding tone which shows his
disobedience towards him in general, and his disrespect to bhismacharya ,
who was the supreme commander of kauravas, who was to be consulted at
that time if anything he wanted.
here, kauravas had 11 akshouhini sena and pandavas had 7 akshouhini sena.
numerically even though kourava army is big in size for duryodhana it
appeared that the army of sons of pandu was much mighter and more
terrible.it has been arranged so skillfully by dhrstadyumna, son of drupada,
which seemed to be more powerful and competent. so he became
disheartened and got irritated.hence he expressed his anger and
disappointments while provoking dronacharya. drupada performed yjna and
got a son to kill dronacharya. such a man was educated in archery by
dronacharya.
there are in this army, heroes wielding mighty bows equal in power to bhima
and arjuna.
a)satyaki and cekitana -yadava king
b)virata - joined the army as he gave shelter for pandavas during
agnyathavaasa.
virata's wife was sudeshna.draupadi helped her while they were in
incognito.sudeshna had a brother named keechaka who misbehaved with
draupadi and was killed by bhimasena. duryodhana thought that it was his
misfortune rather than the cruel fate of keechaka. because if keechaka was
alive now one akshouhini of virata would have joined him with keechaka!!
unfortunately, the princess uttara became wife of abhimanyu and joined
pandava side one full akshouhini senaa!! this added as rubbing salt on
wounds.
c)drupada – bharadwaj was the guru for dronacarya and drupada.at the end of
gurukalam, drupada says to dronacharya, "ask me if u want any help".once,
dronacharya approached drupada and asked for help, but he refused due to a
difference in status between them. dronacharya felt very much insulted and
bad. therefore, he asked his students to bring drupada to him. duryodhana
tried but at last arjuna, bought him as a prisoner. dronacharya forgave
drupada and returned half of his kingdom to him in order to maintain the
friendship between them and made asvatthama king for the other half.
drupada supported jarasandha to defeat krishna. anyway, jarasandhan was
killed. so, seeing drupada on pandava's side, now with krishna! duryodhana
felt bad.
d)dhrstaketu-son of sishupala.again with krishna who killed his father!!
e)kasi –father in law of duryodhana and bhima.but , he supported pandava.
f)purujit and kuntibhoja-brothers of kunti
g)saibya
h)yudhamanyu and uttamauja-sons of drupada.
all the 11 members are not relatives of pandavas. they have got affection
towards them and so accompanied in the war on pandava's side with total
dedication that threatened duryodhana. the following warriors are of
teenage(14-18 years)
i)abhimanyu- son of subhadra.
j)five sons of draupadi:-prathivindhya, sruthasoma, sruthakeerthi, shataneeka
and sruthakarma.
these are maharathis (one who can fight with thousands of warriors)of
pandavas.
even though pandava's army is numerically smaller,as far as commitment,
courage, and skill are concerned, it looked very big in all aspects. duryodhana
felt that it was absolutely compitent.totally,18 members represent
jaya=victory.
lord vedvyasa implies that duryodhana felt that pandavas would win. this
mentioning 18 names including minors such as abhimanyu and sons of
draupadi shows the nervous state of duryodhana
➢ sloka 7:-
o best of brahmanas, duryodhana indirectly implies to dronacharya, that he is
a brahmana and his blood is not kshatriyas, so "what will he do with him??"
and so know them who are also the principal warriors on our side-the general
of my army. for your information, i mention them.
➢ sloka 8:-
“yourself and bhisma:-both are pandavapakshapaati.
reason:-
a)both of you always have lenience in favor of pandava's.
b) ekalavya was hurt when he was rejected by dronacharya, still, he didn't
give up on his resolute will to master archery. dronacharya sent him back
from the ashram after being called shudra. ekalavya made a symbolic statue of
dronacharya and began a disciplined program of self-study over many years.
eventually, ekalavya became an archer of exceptional prowess, greater than
dronacharya ‘s best pupil, arjuna. ekalavya gave his right thumb as guru
dakshina to dronacharya, to make arjuna, the world's greatest archer.
c)bhismacharya and dronacharya while doing sandhyavandana,prays for
pandava's well being.
karna:- bhismacharya told that he does not consider karna as a great hero and
this made karna annoyed, he took a vow that till bhismacharya is in the field,
he will not fight against pandavas.he is the best friend of duryodhana and
totally reliable person. he has got a curse for parashurama that he would
forget all the knowledge required to wield the brahmastra.
krpa(brother of krpi ,who is wife of dronacarya),who is ever victorious in
battle and even so asvatthama(son of dronacarya,who is
unreliable),vikarna(one of the kauravas,who is not
trustworthy),bhurisrava(son of somadatta,son of baathleeka,who is santanu's
brother).here, dronacharya, krpa, asvatthama are three brahmanas who
doesn't have kshatriyas blood as so duryodhana felt bad that what to do with
them??
➢ sloka 9:-
and there are many other heroes, all skilled in warfare equipped with various
weapons and missiles, who have staked their life for me. actually, duryodhana
thinks that their soldiers have left everything for him and have come to the
field without any commitment and involvement, they have come to die.
➢ sloka 10:-(sloka in sanskrit is necessary)
aparyaaptam:-inadequate is that army of our commanded by bhisma.
whereas this army of pandavas commanded by bhima is adequate:-
paryaaptam.
➢ sloka 11:-
therefore, stationed in your respective positions on all fronts, do you all guard
bhisma in particular on all sides. duryodhana says since he has seen amba
who was reborn as shikhandi on pandava's side to kill bhismacharya. this
concludes that the kauravas army headed by bhishma are inadequate to
conquer over the pandavas army headed by bhima.
