MEASUREMENT OF ENERGY
Question Guide:
1. What is the chemical composition of peanut, peanut shell and corn grain?
Peanut:
Peanuts are a good source of nutrients due to their high lipids, protein, and fiber levels, as
well as their carbohydrate, vitamin, and mineral content. The approximate composition of
peanut kernels was estimated to be 5%–10% moisture, 44%–56% fat, 22%–34% protein,
and 6%–24% carbohydrate in 1973 [39], and has been revised by subsequent studies
owing to advancements in analytical methods.
Peanut shell:
Peanut shells consist of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin microfibrils, which are
together referred to as macrofibrils. The chemical composition of peanut shell fiber was
determined to be 35.7% cellulose, 18.7% hemicelluloses, 30.2% lignin, and ash content
(5.9%)
Corn grain:
It is mostly made of starch, accounting for 62% of its weight. Additionally, the corn
kernel contains protein and fiber (19%), water (15%), and oil (4 percent ). Moreover, it
may include traces of additional ingredients, although they are insignificant in
comparison to the primary components.
