Basic Geometrical Ideas: Mathematics Class - VI

This document defines and provides examples of basic geometrical ideas including points, line segments, lines, rays, intersecting lines, and parallel lines. It then provides an exercise asking students to name points, lines, rays, and line segments based on diagrams; name lines using combinations of given points; and draw and label diagrams illustrating specific geometric scenarios such as a point lying on a line segment or two lines intersecting at a point.

Mathematics Class - VI

BASIC GEOMETRICAL IDEAS

Point :-
* Point is a dot marked by a tip of a pencil on the
paper.
* Point is used to determine a location and
represented by capital letter.
Ex: .A .P .M
These will be read as point A , point P, point M.

Line segment:-
* Line segment is a part of a line which has
2 endpoints.
* It has a fixed length and it can be measured .

A • •B
* It is denoted as AB .

Ex: Edge of a book, a tubelight, length of a

blackboard etc

Line :-
* Line is obtained by joining the dots.
* It is the extended part of line segment.
* It has no endpoints and it cannot be measured.

A B
+-+
* It is denoted as AB .
Ex: Railway track, road etc
Ray:-
* Ray is a portion of a line.
* It starts at one point called starting point or initial
point and goes endlessly in another direction.
A

--+
* It is denoted as AB.
Ex: Sun rays, Torch light etc.

Intersecting lines:-
* If two lines have one common point they are
called as intersecting lines.
* The point where two lines intersect, is called as
point of intersection.

Here, 'GH' and 'KL' are 2 intersecting lines and

'P' is the intersecting point.
Ex: Letter 'X' and Symbol '+'

Parallel lines:-
* The lines which do not meet are called parallel
lines.
* It is represented by a symbol 'I I'
( I I )
A B

( I I )
C D
Here, if two lines AB and CD are parallel to each
......................
other then we write it as AB II CD
Ex : Railway track, edges of river, ladder etc.

Exercise 4.1
1. Use the figure to name:

(a) Five points

Five points are: 0, B, C, E and D
(b) A line
Line MorM.
(c) Four rays
Four rays are oc,DB,DEand 01)
(d) Five line segments
Five line segments are oE. ED. oD. oB and EB.

2. Name the line given in all possible (twelve)

ways, choosing only two letters at a time from the
four given points.

B C

Sain:
The given lines can be named as follows:
(i) AB (ii) AC (iii) AD
(iv) BC (v) BO (vi) CD

vii) BA (viii ) CA (ix) DA
~)CB (xi) DB ~ii) DC
3. Use the figure to name:

(a) Line containing point E :- At and u

(b) Line passing through A :- A1
(c) Line on which O lies :- @
(d) Two pairs of intersecting lines :- i) co and A1
ii) u and A1

4. How many lines can pass through

(a) one given point?
Soln: Infinite number of lines can pass through
one given point.

(b) two given points?

Soln: Only one line can pass through two given
points.
• •
5. Draw a rough figure and label suitably in each
of the following cases:
(a) Point P lies on AB .

A p B

(b) XY a
nd
PQ Intersect at M.

(c) Line I contains E and F but not D.

(d) OP and OQ meet at 0 .
