Optical Instrument - Numericals

1. This document contains 10 numerical problems related to calculating magnifying powers, focal lengths, and lengths of compound microscopes and telescopes. The problems involve using given focal lengths of objectives and eyepieces to determine magnifications and distances between lenses and objects.

NUMERICALS ON OPTICAL INSTRUMENT

1. A compound microscope uses an objective lens of focal length 4cm and eyepiece lens of focal
length 10cm. an object is placed 6cm from the objective lens. Calculate the magnifying power
of the compound microscope. Also calculate the length of the microscope.
2. The focal length of objective lens and eyepiece of a microscope are 1.25cm and 5cm
respectively. Find the position of the object relative to the objective in order to obtain an
angular magnification of 30 in normal adjustment.
3. A compound microscope has an objective of focal length 1.25cm and eyepiece of focal length
5cm. a small object is kept at 2.5cm from the objective. If the final image is formed at infinity
the find the length of the lens tube.
4. The total magnification produced by a compound microscope is 20. The magnification
produced by the eyepiece is 5. The microscope is focused on a certain object. The distance
between the objective and eyepiece is observed to be 14cm, if least distance of distinct vision
is 20cm, calculate the focal length of the objective and eyepiece.
5. A compound microscope consist of an objective of focal length 2cm and eyepiece of focal
length 6.25cm separated by a distance of 15cm. How far from the objective should an object
be placed in order to obtain the final image at (i) the least distance of distinct vision and (ii)
infinity.
6. A person with a normal near point using a compound microscope with an objective of focal
length 8mm and eyepiece of focal length 2.5cm can bring an object placed 9mm from the
objective in the sharp focus. What is the separation between the two lenses? What is the
magnifying power of the microscope?
7. An angular magnification of 30X is desired using an objective of focal length 1.25cm and an
eyepiece of focal length 5cm. How would you set the compound microscope?
8. A small telescope has an objective of focal length 144cm and eyepiece of focal length 6cm.
what is the magnifying power of the telescope and the length of the lens tube?
9. A small telescope in normal adjustment has magnifying power of 100 and length of the lens
tube is 101cm. determine the focal length of objective and eyepiece.
10. A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 150cm and eye piece of focal length
5cm. if this telescope is used to view a 100m high tower located 3km away, then find the
height of the final image if it is formed at the distance of least distinct vision.
