EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This summary is about how we can live in space. In this we are explaining the pros
and cons of space settlement.
A space settlement refers to habitation in space (or) on a celestial body where
families live on a permanent basis and that engages in commercial activity which
enables the settlement to grow over time with the goal of becoming economically
and biologically self-sustaining as a part of a larger network of space.

In our project UNIVERSUM we make all the people feel comfortable by providing
the needs of human beings. It is shown in below figure.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Framing of our project UNIVERSUM would never have been accomplished without
the valued guidance of so many people. We take this opportunity to express our
profound gratitude to:

Firstly, we would like to thank the Almighty God for his blessings who gave us
inner strength and determination to work hard and complete UNIVERSUM.
Next, we are grateful to NSS for providing this unique platform of Space
Settlement Design Competition which changed our outlook towards space and its
exploration and helped us learn valuable lessons. Then we also thank our school
Principal Ms Vidya Udaykumar ma’am, Ms Sowmya ma’am and Ms Gowri Senthil
ma’am for their valuable support and encouragement.

Our teacher, guide and mentor Mr Sasapu Venkata Ramana Sir for his honest
criticism and supervision because of which we could improve our work. Because of
his round the clock supervision, we were able to complete the settlement in time.
He also provided technical and mental support to the team because of which we
were put on the right track for the addition of feasible technologies.
He also helped us in 3D modeling of our model. His dedication in teaching us the
software can be shown in the structure. His excellent guidance, propelled us
towards the completion of the wonderful structure.

The overall experience of imagining the survivability of civilians in the horizons

was enthralling. We are really pleased that all the people mentioned above, lifted
our spirit, time to time and supported us throughout the project.
CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 What is space?

 From the perspective of an
earthling, out space is a zone
that occur about 100km (60
miles) above the planet,
where there is no appreciable
air to breathe (or)scatter
light.
 In that area blue gives way to
black because oxygen
molecules are not in enough
abundance to make the sky
blue. Further space is a vacuum meaning that sound can’t be carried
as molecules are not close together to transmit sound between them. Also,
space is not empty, gas, dust and other bits of matter float around the
“emptier” areas of the universe. While more crowded regions can host
planets, stars and galaxies.
1.2What is space settlement?
A space settlement refers to a habitation in space (or) on a celestial body where
families live permanently and that engages in a commercial activity which
enables the settlement to grow over time, to become economically and
biologically self-sustaining as a part of a larger network of space.
1.3What is the need of space settlement?
We require space settlement because of the following reasons
 Over population
 To develop space tourism
 Earth is polluted, we require other safer places
 To prevent natural or man-made disasters.

The primary argument calling for space colonization is long term survival of
human civilization and terrestrial life. By developing alternative locations off
the earth, the planet’s species including humans could live on in an event of
natural or man-made disasters on our planet.

1.4What are the challenges for space settlement?

There are many challenges in space, if we have to settle in space, we can’t do it

so easily.
There are some problems in space like, if asteroid hits our settlement, that could
be a big and dismantle loss if we did not choose the right place to construct our
settlement.
As there is no atmosphere in space, there is no oxygen, (or) any other gases. Not
only gases, even gravity, water, food, minerals etc. are unavailable in space.
Also, there are many radiations in space.
The space can’t assure all the luxurious needs which are available on earth. We
cannot grow plants and trees in space as on earth.
There are many ways to grow plants and trees in space, and hence we would be
able get enough food in our space settlement.

1.5What are advantages and disadvantages?

We have provided all the basic needs of human life. Our settlement can rotate to
provide gravitational force. We have also provided solar panels which can
generate electricity.

ADVANTAGES

 Enhancing safety on earth.

 Improvement our day to day lives.
 Making scientific discoveries
 Improving health care.
 Sparking youth’s interest in science
 Protecting our planet and our environment
 Co-operating with countries around the world

DISADVANTAGES
 Space travel can be dangerous
 It may contribute to space junk.
 Many missions may not yield any results
CHAPTER 2
Structure

2.1 BASIC SHAPES

SPHERE:
It is a perfectly symmetrical shape. All the points on the surface are
the same distance ‘r’ from the center. It has no edges or vertices.
In nature: it is as small as a droplet and as large as a planet.
Volume and surface area
Surface area = 4×π×r2
Volume = (4/3) πr3

TORUS:
It is formed by revolving a small circle along a line made by another
circle. It has no edge or vertices but it is not a polyhedron.
A torus should not be confused with a solid torus, the ring torus is one
way to embed this space into three-dimensional Euclidean space.

CYLINDER:
It has a flat base and a flat top. The base is as same as the top. From
base to top the shape stays the same.
It has one curved side It is not a polyhedron as it has a curved surface.
Surface area = 2πr× (r + h)
Volume = π× r2×h

CONE:
It has a circle at one end. And a point at the other end and a curved
side. It is a rotated triangle.
Surface Area = π×r×(r+s)
Volume = 1/3 πr2 h

CUBE:
Cube has 6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices.
One of the platonic solids
Surface Area = 6× (edge length)2
Volume = (edge length) 3

Cuboid:
It has 6 flat faces and an angle. It is also a prism because it has the
same cross. Section along a length.
Area = 2×(lb+bh+hl)
Volume: l×b×h
(Here l=length, b=breath, h=height)

2.2 CHOOSING AMONG THE SHAPES:

We have chosen shapes like torus, cylinder, sphere. We have chosen

torus because it makes artificial gravity by rotating so it is very
helpful. Next, we have chosen cylinder because it makes support for
other shapes. Next is sphere, we used sphere as main control room
because it is very easy to see other parts so it helps main control room
to fix the problems and control the whole settlement.

2.3 LOCATION OF STRUCTURE

It is very important to choose a location for our structure there are

five locations in space:
 Lagrange 1 is point between sun and earth. It has gravitational pull of
both sun and earth.
 Lagrange 2 point lies far from earth and in opposite direction of sun.
 Lagrange 3 lies behind sun and it is in opposite direction of earth.
 Lagrange 4 and 5 are stable. These points are sometimes called
triangular Lagrange points or points "trojans".
As Lagrange 1,2 and 3 are unstable. And Lagrange 4 and 5 are stable.
From Lagrange 4 and 5 we have randomly chosen Lagrange 4.

2.4 MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION OF SPACE COLONY

In space there is no atmosphere, no gravity, and is full of radiation.

The heat that comes from the sun is more in space. So we need the
materials that can withstand all these odds and will be stable. The
materials which reflect heat and radiation. We also need stability so,
some hard metals and metal alloys like aluminum, tungsten, titanium,
lead glass etc.
Aluminum, lead and concrete can stop all the three, gamma, beta,
alpha radiation particles. Thickness of outer walls made from it will
be 14 m. Solar panels are used to generate energy to the entire
structure. We can also keep glass, because glass reflects the heat and
only let the light pass through it. We are constructing our structure
with aluminum, aluminum alloys, lead glass, tungsten and lead. It’s
because their melting points are high as well as they are hard and can
stop radiation.

Materials used in construction:

1) ALUMINIUM OXNITRIDE (1700 MPA):

 Good shock absorber

 High tensile strength
 Very high melting point

2) MS FIBER (3600 MPA):

 High density
 High performance fiber
 High quality

3) ASBESTOS FILTERS (4.6 GPA):

 Heat resistance
 Used as an insulator
 High tensile strength

4) ALUMINIUM TITANATE (5.4 GPA):

 High tensile strength
 Good thermal shock resistant
 High Service temperature
5) CARBON NANOTUBES (85 GPA):
 Very high tensile strength
 Resist high temperature
6) SAILON (7.0 GPA):
 High tensile strength
 Low thermal expansion
 Good oxidation resistance

2.6 CONSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE

STEP 1:

This is our main station it controls whole

planet, so this is our first step.

STEP 2:
These two tori near to the center will have all the industries and in
and out of space shuttles will be carried out in these places.

STEP 3:

This is the residential area. Torus can provide gravity and is the best
shape to make residential area. This will contain all the hospitals,
schools and houses.

STEP 4:

These are our solar panels we have kept four solar panels because if
there are more panels then more energy is generatedsupplied.
STEP 5:

This part contains electromagnetic fields for

protecting from asteroid. This is also
controlling our space colony., S so, this is
the last step.

FINALDESIGN
2.7 ROTATING AND NON-ROTATING

If you have seen our structure we can rotate the torus part, because
that’s where the people live. It is a massive body, to rotate that big
massive body we need more energy and force. To create gravity, we
will add thrusters and boosters which will create centrifugal force
which will result in the gravity. They are used in rockets and in space
craft.
2.8 THRUSTING AND BOOSTING SYSTEM

First, we will know what are thrusters and boosters-

THRUSTERS:
Gravity, which is very important for the survival of living beings, is

only possible to be brought by rotating the structures, which produces

pseudo-gravity, which is actually centrifugal force. , due to the
rotating of the structures. Using thrusters, which will exert thrust in
order to make the structures rotate, will do this rotation.

BOOSTERS:
Boosters are the machines that give a space craft or a rocket its take
off force or thrust. They are required to launch a spacecraft or rocket.
We like to use ion-tThruster for our structure and solid rocket
boosters.

2.9 DOCKING SECTION

Docking section, it means joining two massive bodies that are flying in
space. We can import and export the goods in the docking section. We
can connect the bodies permanently or temporarily by using this
docking section.

Chapter 3 Human needs in space

INTRODUCTION:
In Space Colony, a life-support system is a group of devices
that allow a human being to survive in space. A life-support
system may supply air, water and food. It must also maintain
the correct body temperature, an acceptable pressure on the body and deal
with the body's waste products. Components of the life-support system are
life critical and are designed and constructed using safety engineering
techniques.

3.1 Gravity

Artificial gravity can be created by centrifugal force. It is

the space craft hall that provides the necessary central force.
The gravity force by the object in artificial is equal to the central
gravitational force. By the Torus shape, we rotate the colony and also, we
can create artificial gravity.
The creation of the artificial gravity is considered desirable for long time
space travel or habitation, for ease of mobility, for in space fluid
management and to avoid the adverse long term health effects of
weightlessness.

3.2 Food

Humans living in space must have an adequate diet and food must be
sufficient and nutritious. A diet adequate for reasonable, environmental
stress and a heavy work load requires about 3000cal per day. It should
consist of 200gram of water, so in our space colony we provide
1. American cuisine
2. Italian cuisine
3. Chinese cuisine
4. Indian cuisine

Growing plants in space:

As there is no soil in space, there are different methods to grow plants.

1. Hydroponics
2. Aeroponics
3. Aquaponics
In our space colony we prefer to use Hydroponic and Aeroponic, because
Aquaponic can be a problematic method as there is a limit of water usage in
our space colony.
3.3 Water

It is easy to make water from hydrogen gas and

oxygen gas. Mix the two gases together and a spark
or sufficient heat to provide the activation of energy.
To start the reaction and resto instant water, when
the chemical bonds reform to make water,
additional energy is released which propagates the
reaction but there is one downside to the reaction. It
is expensive and it may end in some explosions sometimes and we can also
harvest water from asteroids and also glaciers on the moon and other
planets.

Important formula:

1. Water H20
2. Carbon dioxide CO2
3. Hydrogen H2
4. Sabatier
CO2 + 4H2 = CH4 + 2H2O

3.4: Oxygen

It is the major component of the colony atmosphere and is required for

manufacturing water, oxygen and other elements can be
obtained from moon.
Electrolysis can be used to produce oxygen. This process
splits water molecules reclaimed from other users on board.
The station into oxygen and hydrogen via Electrolysis. The
oxygen is vented into the cabin and hydrogen is vented into
space.

Oxygen is also carried from the farming section to the residential torus and
CO2 is carried from the residential torus to the farming section (Exchange of
gases)

3.5: Energy

Energy is the most vital resource in the life of everyone. In ancient times,
people obtained energy from human and animal labor. After many years,
people have learned to acquire energy from water, air and sunlight. We can
gain energy in multiple ways

Solar energy:

Gaining energy from sun is created by solar panels. The benefactor is that
this form of energy does no harm to air environment and keep our
surroundings clean.

Wind energy:
This form of energy is created by wind mills. This doesn’t oppose the
environment in any way. Similar to the solar energy on earth. If there is no
wind in space, then we cannot use it.

3.6: Temperature and pressure

The temperature is the most important point for seasons. If we want to

create a hot environment in our space structure, we can absorb from the
space using solar panels and release it to our UNIVERSUM structure.

If we want to create a cool environment in our structure, we can release the

hotness outside, this process is called as “Thermal rejections”.

We can determine the temperature by using temperature sensors.

We need pressure in our structures like we have on earth. If the pressure is
not same as we have here on earth, we can face many problems like:

1. Hypoxia (Tension in lungs, Dim division, loss of consciousness

etc.)
2. Altitude Sickness (headache, sleeplessness etc.)
3. Barotrauma and more.

We can create pressure in our space by the method called the dumping of
air. This method is also used in planes and aircrafts, we can pump air in a
structure with the help of Cryogenic tanks.

3.7: Days and Nights

Days and nights can be created with the use of mirrors. This will help set the
temperature in our space. it will be 12 hours day and 12 hours night. Day or
night cycles and artificial gravity will all resemble earth.

The difference between day and night is as shown in the figure below.

3.8: Seasons
There are three different types of seasons: Summer, winter and Monsoon.
During summer, heat levels are increased, the same process is done during
winter and monsoon. The seasons are kept because humans are habituated
to the earth’s climate and atmospheric pressure. So, this is the reason,
pressure is kept at 0.5ATM for survival of Human life in space settlement.

Chapter 4
OPERATIONS AND AUTOMATION
4.1 Controlling and Monitoring station

We are planning to do so many things related to controlling such as

Temperature, Security system, etc.
So, we are situating the main controlling station in the top and bottom of
our space settlement, in the sphere. The sphere has been divided in the ratio
of 20%: 80%.
We are using 20% as the controlling area and 80% as the agricultural area.
As we want to ensure complete safety and security in our settlement so that
the people have no problem in terms of comfort.
We have equipped the controlling area with the best technology.
The temperature and the weather of the settlement are controlled by
extremely qualified and experienced technicians.
The technicians work 24/7, in two shifts so that the people will not have any
problem living in the space settlement and always the temperature will be
checked by our technicians and problems can be taken care of as soon as
they occur.
4.2 Protection

Protection is one of the most important elements in life. In the colony, we

have many ways of protection.
1. Nano cameras and navigators fixed in passengers who travel from earth
to UNIVERSUM
2. next to the door of every house there will be a screen that will detect
fingerprint/retinal scan and voice of the member who lives in the house.
In vehicles we have navigators so that we can trace them, the screen
displays will be viewed by the government once
3. There will be a security guard at the entrance of every street
4. Schools in UNIVERSUM will issue wards for all teaching and non-
teaching staff and the students. The same rule will be applied in
industries and other places.
5. When any family wants to admit one of their family members in the
hospital, they will be given cards that should be focused on the scanner in
front of the screen, then only they can enter the hospital.

4.3 Transportation
We are going to provide transportation fuels, by the Sabatier method as it
produces CH4 as fuel. We are going to only provide public transport in our
space colony. Nobody will own any of personal transport, the reason behind
this is because people might overuse the resource and exhaust it.

4.4 Communication

We are going to communicate very carefully because if we construct the

mobile tower, it might be dangerous for the people from harmful radiation.
So mobile radiation will connect to satellite so radiation will not be excess
on the residential area.

4.5 Waste Management

Waste management means taking care of pollutants. We must pay attention

to this and cry out the task regularly, we have decided that it is best to
automate recycling the waste until it’s used. Given the materials and
processes that will be used to recycle them

Metals/Plastics: If the material is a metal like steel, copper, or nickel, we

will first crush the metals into the smallest space or melt the metals at more
than 1200 C. This will change the scale of the metals from solid to liquid.
Then, we will mold the molten metal into useful equipment, etc. This will be
used to make things like furniture, utensils, art, etc. which keeps our colony
clean.

Wood/Paper: If the material is of wood or paper, we will crush them into

small particles. This will make it more flexible to mold and shape. We
cannot burn them as it can give Out C02. So, we will convey these
substances into something simpler like sandpaper, etc.
This will protect our colony from being polluted.

Junk in Space:
The junk floating in space is a possible threat to our
The settlement as it can collide with our settlement. To solve this problem,
we will use a device from NASA called the WRANGLER. The WRANGLER
is an Asteroid grabber used to grab asteroids and crush them into smaller
particles. We can use this device to manage the waste in our space
settlement, also keeping it safe from other dangers.

This is our plan for recycling and reusing. We also thought that instead of
giving 0Ut plastic bags, we will give strong polypropylene bags while
shopping IF groceries. This will guarantee a green and clean EGC Colony.

4.6 Robotics
We show the big importance of robotics in our colony as it IS the main
foundation of the whole settlement. Robotics is the study of robots. In our
settlement, robotics is very important. We use robotics in every field of
settlement. Robotics is very useful in the following situations

Security: Robots can be programmed to learn martial arts and karate. It is

also stronger than humans. This will keep the residents safe from any harm.
It also reduces the risk of anyone being mugged.
Calculation:
Robots are smarter than humans in calculating large Amounts of sums.
Therefore, robots can be used to calculate complex problems and solve
difficult puzzles. This improves mankind and their knowledge.

Medication:
Humans are not perfect, but robots are! When performing risky surgeries,
humans are not able to guarantee the safety of the patient. However, the
robot will perform the surgery without any risk to the patient’s life,
therefore robots are useful in medical procedures.

Labor: some dangerous jobs risk the worker’s life. For these jobs, instead
of hiring humans, we will make robots. So, no lives will be put at risk. This
will save thousands of lives from getting killed and millions of lives from
getting ruined. Therefore, robots must be used for dangerous works and
jobs.

CHAPTER 5
HUMAN LIFE DESIGN
5.1 CONSTITUENCY

There are not many constituencies in

our space colony. Everyone belongs to
the same category no matter what race,
rich, poor, caste, etc.
Everyone will get the same amount of
land for shelter
They can’t buy or sell or reconstruct the
land provided. Some of the rules are given below

 There is no caste system

 If the people are illiterate, we will educate them
 Saturday and Sunday are holidays for the people
 People should maintain cleanliness in our colony
 Police should investigate every case filed by a person
 Corruption or bribing is strictly prohibited
 The other rules can be taken by constitutions of other countries.

5.2 COMMUNITY DESIGNING

In our space settlement, there will be no caste system, if anyone does fight
for caste or racial discrimination, they will be sent to jail. If they commit any
other crime, they have to do labor work for our space colony. If someone
discriminates against other people, they have to give their property to the
ones being discriminated.

5.3 LAW AND ORDER

Every place should have law and order to function properly. if there is no
law our colony will be in chaos. So, we need laws to direct our people
properly.
Here are some rules:
 Elders and women should be given
respect
 Safety rules must be followed
 The laws must be in the interest of the people
 Laws must not suppress the people’s basic rights
 If the laws aren’t in the interest of the people, it can be removed

5.3 EMPLOYMENT

The purpose of our settlement is to provide human beings place to live, for
living we need money, to earn money we need a job. For middle class people
it is very difficult to do their own. As we need workers for our own colony,
we are going to hire people for things like collecting minerals from
asteroids, working in our main station, doctors,
engineers, scientists etc. if they have enough money they can start their own
businesses like trading metals, fruits etc.
Hence, we have employment and a chance to do own business too.

5.4 EDUCATION AND SCHOOLS

BY-SA

Education system is a group of institution is to provide education to

children and young people in educational settings. Education is the most
important
thing in children’s future. Our space settlement OASIS is providing a new
way of education as their technology should be in schools, colleges,
institutions, libraries. Etc.…, we are providing digital and mechanical
education, we are going to have a new rule that after exams they get a
certificate. Then they can get jobs from that certificate.

5.5 HEALTH CARE

Diseases can occur at any time, to cure the disease we need medical care
such as hospitals, etc. We have hospitals for sick and injured people with 24
hours of emergency care. Special treatment is given to doctors to operate in
every condition in space. If the patients need further medication, we can
send them to earth. our system does not give junk food to patients

5.6 RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT

To keep people’s, we have built recreation and entertainment zone shown in

our colony if people did not get any entertainment, they can get mental
issues from stress and tension. The places for entertainment are:
1. Sports stadium
2. Planetarium
3. Space trip around the planets
4. Auditorium
5. Area malls
6. Amusement Parks
7. Historical Museum
8. Movie sets for shooting
9. Cinema Theater
10. Gaming Club, etc.

CHAPTER 6
TRADE AND BUSINESS
6.1 TRADE AND BUSINESS

We are planning to establish some industries in our colony

 Fabric industry
 Agricultural industry
 Mining industry
 Fabric industry
to stich a dress we require 3 important things, they are:

1. Method:
Looms are of two types
I. looms which work automatically are called
power looms

II. Hand looms: looms which are operated by humans are called
hand looms

2. Fiber
3 types of fiber will be used in project name:

a. Cotton
b. Wool
c. Nylon

How the three fibers will be produced in project name

Cotton: cotton fibers will be produced in our colony by cultivation
Wool: wool fibers will be generated by sheep
Nylon: As nylon is an artificial fiber, it will be made in labs through
chemicals

3.Colors to dye clothes

We will produce colorful textiles by using natural colors to dye
Like:
Blue: Indigo, cabbage, etc.
Red, brown: pomegranate, hibiscus, etc.
Pink: cherry, strawberry, etc.
Yellow: Sunflower, marigold, turmeric etc.
Orange: carrot, gold lichen, onions, etc.
Green: spinach, peppermint leaves
All the materials used to dye clothes will be produced in agricultural area.

 Agricultural industry
Agriculture is a very important part in human life because food is
needed for all human beings to survive.
We can use Hydroponics method for agriculture. Its advantages are:
1. We can cultivate plants even without soil.
2. This process helps plants to produce more oxygen
than any other methods.
3. If oxygen is available more for plants, roots can
absorb more nutrients.
4. It takes 20% less space for growing than the normal
plants.
5. It will observe 20 times less water than the normal
plants which are there in earth available in
UNIVERSUM.

 MINING INDUSTRIES:
Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological
materials from the earth. UNIVERSUM also has mining
industries. But we cannot mine minerals from EGC. So, we have
planned to mine minerals from moon and asteroids.
Moon has some important minerals like Aluminum, gold and
mineral ilmenite. Mineral ilmenite is a compound that contains
iron, Titanium and oxygen.
We can break down Ilmenite to separate these elements.
Uses of minerals extracted in moon – [Moon has many useful
minerals.]
Aluminum- Aluminum can be used to manufacture utensils.
Platinum- Platinum can be used to manufacture ornaments.
Gold- Gold can be used to manufacture ornaments.
Iron- Iron can be used in manufacturing of raw materials .

Location of mining industries in UNIVERSUM- We located

Mining industries in Torus near Docking port.

Why will mining industries be located near Docking port?

Mining industries in UNIVERSUM will be located near Docking
Port because, when the minerals are brought from moon through
space shuttle in bigger amounts. So, it will be easy to transport
minerals to the industries. If there is less production of water in
our space settlement, UNIVERSUM has planned to mine water
This should
from the Moon or from Jupitar’s Moon Titan.
be followed in our space settlement. Crops
should be managed properly. Crops should
be separated properly.70% of the sphere
should be left to grow crops and 5% of it
should be separated to store
