EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This summary is about how we can live in space. In this we are explaining the pros
and cons of space settlement.
A space settlement refers to habitation in space (or) on a celestial body where
families live on a permanent basis and that engages in commercial activity which
enables the settlement to grow over time with the goal of becoming economically
and biologically self-sustaining as a part of a larger network of space.
In our project UNIVERSUM we make all the people feel comfortable by providing
the needs of human beings. It is shown in below figure.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Framing of our project UNIVERSUM would never have been accomplished without
the valued guidance of so many people. We take this opportunity to express our
profound gratitude to:
Firstly, we would like to thank the Almighty God for his blessings who gave us
inner strength and determination to work hard and complete UNIVERSUM.
Next, we are grateful to NSS for providing this unique platform of Space
Settlement Design Competition which changed our outlook towards space and its
exploration and helped us learn valuable lessons. Then we also thank our school
Principal Ms Vidya Udaykumar ma’am, Ms Sowmya ma’am and Ms Gowri Senthil
ma’am for their valuable support and encouragement.
Our teacher, guide and mentor Mr Sasapu Venkata Ramana Sir for his honest
criticism and supervision because of which we could improve our work. Because of
his round the clock supervision, we were able to complete the settlement in time.
He also provided technical and mental support to the team because of which we
were put on the right track for the addition of feasible technologies.
He also helped us in 3D modeling of our model. His dedication in teaching us the
software can be shown in the structure. His excellent guidance, propelled us
towards the completion of the wonderful structure.
The primary argument calling for space colonization is long term survival of
human civilization and terrestrial life. By developing alternative locations off
the earth, the planet’s species including humans could live on in an event of
natural or man-made disasters on our planet.
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Space travel can be dangerous
It may contribute to space junk.
Many missions may not yield any results
CHAPTER 2
Structure
TORUS:
It is formed by revolving a small circle along a line made by another
circle. It has no edge or vertices but it is not a polyhedron.
A torus should not be confused with a solid torus, the ring torus is one
way to embed this space into three-dimensional Euclidean space.
CYLINDER:
It has a flat base and a flat top. The base is as same as the top. From
base to top the shape stays the same.
It has one curved side It is not a polyhedron as it has a curved surface.
Surface area = 2πr× (r + h)
Volume = π× r2×h
CONE:
It has a circle at one end. And a point at the other end and a curved
side. It is a rotated triangle.
Surface Area = π×r×(r+s)
Volume = 1/3 πr2 h
CUBE:
Cube has 6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices.
One of the platonic solids
Surface Area = 6× (edge length)2
Volume = (edge length) 3
Cuboid:
It has 6 flat faces and an angle. It is also a prism because it has the
same cross. Section along a length.
Area = 2×(lb+bh+hl)
Volume: l×b×h
(Here l=length, b=breath, h=height)
Heat resistance
Used as an insulator
High tensile strength

STEP 1:
STEP 2:
These two tori near to the center will have all the industries and in
and out of space shuttles will be carried out in these places.
STEP 3:
This is the residential area. Torus can provide gravity and is the best
shape to make residential area. This will contain all the hospitals,
schools and houses.
STEP 4:
These are our solar panels we have kept four solar panels because if
there are more panels then more energy is generatedsupplied.
STEP 5:
FINALDESIGN
2.7 ROTATING AND NON-ROTATING
If you have seen our structure we can rotate the torus part, because
that’s where the people live. It is a massive body, to rotate that big
massive body we need more energy and force. To create gravity, we
will add thrusters and boosters which will create centrifugal force
which will result in the gravity. They are used in rockets and in space
craft.
2.8 THRUSTING AND BOOSTING SYSTEM
THRUSTERS:
Gravity, which is very important for the survival of living beings, is
BOOSTERS:
Boosters are the machines that give a space craft or a rocket its take
off force or thrust. They are required to launch a spacecraft or rocket.
We like to use ion-tThruster for our structure and solid rocket
boosters.
Docking section, it means joining two massive bodies that are flying in
space. We can import and export the goods in the docking section. We
can connect the bodies permanently or temporarily by using this
docking section.
3.1 Gravity
3.2 Food
Humans living in space must have an adequate diet and food must be
sufficient and nutritious. A diet adequate for reasonable, environmental
stress and a heavy work load requires about 3000cal per day. It should
consist of 200gram of water, so in our space colony we provide
1. American cuisine
2. Italian cuisine
3. Chinese cuisine
4. Indian cuisine
Important formula:
1. Water H20
2. Carbon dioxide CO2
3. Hydrogen H2
4. Sabatier
CO2 + 4H2 = CH4 + 2H2O
3.4: Oxygen
Oxygen is also carried from the farming section to the residential torus and
CO2 is carried from the residential torus to the farming section (Exchange of
gases)
3.5: Energy
Energy is the most vital resource in the life of everyone. In ancient times,
people obtained energy from human and animal labor. After many years,
people have learned to acquire energy from water, air and sunlight. We can
gain energy in multiple ways
Solar energy:
Gaining energy from sun is created by solar panels. The benefactor is that
this form of energy does no harm to air environment and keep our
surroundings clean.
Wind energy:
This form of energy is created by wind mills. This doesn’t oppose the
environment in any way. Similar to the solar energy on earth. If there is no
wind in space, then we cannot use it.
We can create pressure in our space by the method called the dumping of
air. This method is also used in planes and aircrafts, we can pump air in a
structure with the help of Cryogenic tanks.
The difference between day and night is as shown in the figure below.
3.8: Seasons
There are three different types of seasons: Summer, winter and Monsoon.
During summer, heat levels are increased, the same process is done during
winter and monsoon. The seasons are kept because humans are habituated
to the earth’s climate and atmospheric pressure. So, this is the reason,
pressure is kept at 0.5ATM for survival of Human life in space settlement.
Chapter 4
OPERATIONS AND AUTOMATION
4.1 Controlling and Monitoring station
4.3 Transportation
We are going to provide transportation fuels, by the Sabatier method as it
produces CH4 as fuel. We are going to only provide public transport in our
space colony. Nobody will own any of personal transport, the reason behind
this is because people might overuse the resource and exhaust it.
4.4 Communication
Junk in Space:
The junk floating in space is a possible threat to our
The settlement as it can collide with our settlement. To solve this problem,
we will use a device from NASA called the WRANGLER. The WRANGLER
is an Asteroid grabber used to grab asteroids and crush them into smaller
particles. We can use this device to manage the waste in our space
settlement, also keeping it safe from other dangers.
This is our plan for recycling and reusing. We also thought that instead of
giving 0Ut plastic bags, we will give strong polypropylene bags while
shopping IF groceries. This will guarantee a green and clean EGC Colony.
4.6 Robotics
We show the big importance of robotics in our colony as it IS the main
foundation of the whole settlement. Robotics is the study of robots. In our
settlement, robotics is very important. We use robotics in every field of
settlement. Robotics is very useful in the following situations
Medication:
Humans are not perfect, but robots are! When performing risky surgeries,
humans are not able to guarantee the safety of the patient. However, the
robot will perform the surgery without any risk to the patient’s life,
therefore robots are useful in medical procedures.
Labor: some dangerous jobs risk the worker’s life. For these jobs, instead
of hiring humans, we will make robots. So, no lives will be put at risk. This
will save thousands of lives from getting killed and millions of lives from
getting ruined. Therefore, robots must be used for dangerous works and
jobs.
CHAPTER 5
HUMAN LIFE DESIGN
5.1 CONSTITUENCY
In our space settlement, there will be no caste system, if anyone does fight
for caste or racial discrimination, they will be sent to jail. If they commit any
other crime, they have to do labor work for our space colony. If someone
discriminates against other people, they have to give their property to the
ones being discriminated.
Every place should have law and order to function properly. if there is no
law our colony will be in chaos. So, we need laws to direct our people
properly.
Here are some rules:
Elders and women should be given
respect
Safety rules must be followed
The laws must be in the interest of the people
Laws must not suppress the people’s basic rights
If the laws aren’t in the interest of the people, it can be removed
5.3 EMPLOYMENT
The purpose of our settlement is to provide human beings place to live, for
living we need money, to earn money we need a job. For middle class people
it is very difficult to do their own. As we need workers for our own colony,
we are going to hire people for things like collecting minerals from
asteroids, working in our main station, doctors,
engineers, scientists etc. if they have enough money they can start their own
businesses like trading metals, fruits etc.
Hence, we have employment and a chance to do own business too.

CHAPTER 6
TRADE AND BUSINESS
6.1 TRADE AND BUSINESS
1. Method:
Looms are of two types
I. looms which work automatically are called
power looms
II. Hand looms: looms which are operated by humans are called
hand looms
2. Fiber
3 types of fiber will be used in project name:
a. Cotton
b. Wool
c. Nylon
Agricultural industry
Agriculture is a very important part in human life because food is
needed for all human beings to survive.
We can use Hydroponics method for agriculture. Its advantages are:
1. We can cultivate plants even without soil.
2. This process helps plants to produce more oxygen
than any other methods.
3. If oxygen is available more for plants, roots can
absorb more nutrients.
4. It takes 20% less space for growing than the normal
plants.
5. It will observe 20 times less water than the normal
plants which are there in earth available in
UNIVERSUM.
MINING INDUSTRIES:
Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological
materials from the earth. UNIVERSUM also has mining
industries. But we cannot mine minerals from EGC. So, we have
planned to mine minerals from moon and asteroids.
Moon has some important minerals like Aluminum, gold and
mineral ilmenite. Mineral ilmenite is a compound that contains
iron, Titanium and oxygen.
We can break down Ilmenite to separate these elements.
Uses of minerals extracted in moon – [Moon has many useful
minerals.]
Aluminum- Aluminum can be used to manufacture utensils.
Platinum- Platinum can be used to manufacture ornaments.
Gold- Gold can be used to manufacture ornaments.
Iron- Iron can be used in manufacturing of raw materials .
