DETACHED HOME
A stand-alone house (also called a single-detached dwelling, detached residence or
detached house) is a free-standing residential building. It is sometimes referred to as a
single-family home, as opposed to a multi-family residential dwelling.
A single-family (home, house, or dwelling) means that the building is a structure maintained
and used as a single dwelling unit. Even though a dwelling unit shares one or more walls
with another dwelling unit, it is a single family residence if it has direct access to a street or
thoroughfare and does not share heating facilities, hot water equipment, nor any other
essential facility or service with any other dwelling unit. It does exclude, however, any short-
term accommodation (hotel, motels, inns), large-scale rental accommodation
ROW HOUSES
Row houses are a category of urban homes that are located in one area and are consistent,
one with the other, in architecture, design, and appearance. houses described with this
term are multi-storey units that are at least consistent, if not identical, to all adjoining
homes.
Besides architectural elements, row houses are often associated with multi-storey living.
The main living area of many can be found on the second floor, not the first. In some cases,
depending on renovation results, it may feature two spacious floors for the owner with
individual apartments above or below the main living area.
RESIDENTIAL CLUSTER
A Residential Cluster Development, or open space development, is the grouping of
residential properties on a development site in order to use the extra land as open space,
recreation or agriculture. It is increasingly becoming popular in subdivision development
because it allows the developer to spend much less on land and obtain much the same price
per unit as for detached houses. The shared garden areas can be a source of conflict
however. Claimed advantages include more green/public space, closer community, and an
optimal storm water management. Cluster development often encounters planning
objections.
Cluster Development
Cluster Development, also known as conservation development, is a site planning approach
that is an alternative to conventional subdivision development. It is a practice of Low Impact
Development that groups residential properties in a proposed subdivision closer together in
order to utilize the rest of the land for open space, recreation or agriculture. The purpose of
cluster development is to:
Promote integrated site design that is considerate to the natural features and
topography
Protect environmentally sensitive areas of the development site, as well as
permanently preserve important natural features, prime agricultural land, and open
space
Encourage saving costs on infrastructure and maintenance through practices such as
decreasing the area that needs to be paved and the decreasing distance that utilities
need to be run
The primary purpose is to create more area for open space, recreation and more
social interaction
APARTMENT
An apartment (American English), or flat (British English, Indian English), is a self-contained
housing unit (a type of residential real estate) that occupies only part of a building, generally
on a single storey. There are many names for these overall buildings, see below. The
housing tenure of apartments also varies considerably, from large-scale public housing, to
owner occupancy within what is legally a condominium (strata title or common hold), to
tenants renting from a private landlord (see leasehold estate).
By size of the building
Apartment buildings are multi-story buildings where three or more residences are contained
within one structure.
A high-rise building is defined by its height differently in various jurisdictions. It may be only
residential, in which case it might also be called a tower block, or it might include other
functions such as hotel, offices, or shops.
URBAN DENSITY
Urban density is a term used in urban planning and urban design to refer to the number of
people inhabiting a given urbanized area. As such it is to be distinguished from other
measures of population density. Urban density is considered an important factor in
understanding how cities function.
Measurement
Urban density is a very specific measurement of the population of an urbanized area,
excluding non-urban land-uses. Non-urban uses include regional open space, agriculture and
water-bodies.
