Musculoskeletal System Basics

This document outlines a module on the musculoskeletal system for a 6th-grade science class, detailing objectives such as identifying functions of the system, classifying skeleton types, and understanding muscle types. It includes instructional materials, lesson procedures, and health tips for maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system. The evaluation section consists of identifying joint types and an assignment to draw and color a human skeleton.

Science 6, Musculoskeletal System

I. Objectives:

At the end of this module, the child may:

• Identify the different function of the musculoskeletal system.

• Classify and differentiate axial and appendicular skeleton.

• Classify and differentiate the varying types of muscles and

describe their characteristics.

• Cite healthful habits that will promote the normal functioning of

the musculoskeletal system.

Values Infused: Being healthy

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic/lesson : Musculoskeletal System

B. Reference/s: Science Link 6, Rex. Pub. Co(pages 85-91)

C. Instructional materials: Pictures, Power Point, Video

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

Let us all stand up,

bow our head and let us

pray.

Angel of God, my

guardian dear

To whom God’s love

commit me here

Ever this day be at my

side to light and guard

to rule and guide.

Amen. Amen!

2. Greetings

Good morning ever one!

Good morning teacher!

3. Checking of attendance

B. Lesson Proper

1. Discussion

Our discussion for

today is all about

Musculoskeletal System.

When you heard

Musculoskeletal System

what comes on your Teacher, it’s all about

mind? bones and muscles.

Very good! It’s all

about bones and muscles of our

body.

Musculoskeletal

System is composed of the

different organs of the

skeletal and muscular

system. Their organs work

together to allow us to

perform locomotion. The

bones serve as the

framework of the body,

whereas the muscles

contract and relax that

leads to movement.

There are three(3)

kinds of structure:

1. Structure of the

Skeleton

 Human skeleton is composed

of different parts. Our

skeleton is composed of

two division:

1. Axial Skeleton – the

skull, vertebral

column, ribs and chest

bone are component of

the axial skeleton.

2. Appendicular

Skeleton – clavicle,

scapula, hipbones, and

bones of the

appendages.

Again what are two division Axial Skeleton and

of skeleton? appendicular Skeleton

Very good! teacher.

2. Structure of Bones

• Bones are made up of

collagen fibers embedded

in mineral salts of

calcium and phosphorous.

• Both minerals are

essential for bone growth

and strength.

Bone Marrow – is a less

dense spongy bone inner

layer which contain a

jelly like yellowish

substance.

Always remember that bone marrow

is very important in our bones

because bone marrow is

responsible to produce blood

cells in our body.

3.Joints

• A structure in the human

body at which two parts of

the skeleton are meet

together.

There are five kinds of

joints:

1. Ball and Socket Joint –

allow movement in all

direction. The joint in

the shoulder and hips are

ball and socket.

2. Hinge Joint – allows

movement in one direction

only. The elbow and knee

joint are hinge joint.

3. Gliding Joint – allow side

to side and back to forth

movement. The join in wrist,

ankles and vertebrae are gliding

joints.
4.Pivot Joint – allow rotations

movement. The joint where two

bones of lower arm, the radius

and the ulna meet is a pivot

joint.

5. Immovable Joint – An

immovable or fixed joint

does not allow movement.

All skull bones except the

lower jaw are immovable

joint.
What are the five kinds of

joints children? Ball and socket joint,

Hinge joint, Gliding joint,

pivot joint and Immovable

Very good! joint.

Now let’s talk about muscles.

• Muscles play an important

role in our movement and

locomotion. Although bones

are joined in different

ways to allow movement

they cannot do so without

the muscles that are

attached to them. Muscles

also protect several

organs in our body.

Three types of Muscles

1.Smooth Muscles

• Are considered as

involuntary muscles they

cannot be can controlled

consciously.

• They are present in the

walls of digestive tract

such as esophagus, stomach

as well the small and

large intestines.

2. Cardiac Muscles

 Are involuntary muscles

which are present only in

the heart.
3. Skeletal Muscles

• Are considered as

voluntary muscles that are

consciously controlled to

move bones.

• It is responsible for all

kinds of movement.

What are the three types

of muscles children?

System Healthy”

• Do regular exercise.

• Wear proper equipment when

playing a game or riding a

bike.

• Eat food rich in calcium

and vitamin D.

• Eat a balance diet.

• Rest
