‘remapping,’ what comes to (Changing, Guiding a new pattern,
mind?” Relocating)
(Making Renew things, Changing layout)
“Okay, Very Good Class.”
B. Presentation of the Lesson ,
"During today's class, we will discuss
the ‘Remapping of Philippine
Literature Through Criticism.’"
C. Review
"Before we proceed to our new
lesson, let's have a review."
“Poems, novels, essays, and other written
"In your own word, what is Literature?" material”
“That’s correct. Very Good. What else?” “Written works of any kind”
"That's also correct. Very Good Class."
“I can see that you are familiar with the word
‘literature.’”
“But, how about the word ‘criticism?’ Do you “When a person makes a severe judgment,
have any idea of what it means?” comment, etc.”
"Yes, that's right. Would you mind sharing “Making an unfavorable decision”
another aside from the first answer?"
"Exactly, Very Good. Thank you all for
participating, class. Now I see you have a
good understanding of the literature and
criticism.”
D. Discussion
“A while ago, we talked about what is
literature and what is criticism. So, the
first thing we will learn for today is
about, ‘What is literary criticism?’”
Literary criticism is the comparison,
analysis, interpretation, and/or
evaluation of works of literature.
Examples:
Biographical, Comparative, Ethical,
Expressive, Feminist, Historical,
Mimetic, Pragmatic, Psychological, “Yes, Ma’am.”
Social, Textual, Theoretical
“Interpretation and own opinion”
“Is that clear up to this point?”
“Okay, very good. So, how would you describe
literary criticism in your own words?”
“Great answer. That is correct.”
“On the other hand, Literary Criticism
can also be understood in this way.”
“see what has not been seen before
say what has not been said before
change what needs to be changed”
For further information,
One of the earliest works of criticism is
Plato’s argument against the
consequences of poetic inspiration in
his writing entitled “The Republic.” Up
until now, this text is used to guide
critics on how a text can be
interpreted or what other modes of
interpretation can be done.
“The link is given below; if you want to
know more about this book, you may
watch the summary of the whole book
after this class. Speaking of this, we
may observe the Functions of Literary
Criticism through this book which are:
1.Review of books
2.Reevaluate any given text
“Yes, Ma’am. That further information
3.Invoke discussions, reassess society,
makes me feel more evidently comprehend
and redefine culture
the topic, and I will go and watch the video
4.Social and political arguments”
after this class, Ma'am.”

“So that is for further information and
any questions until this? Is everyone
clear up to this point?”
"Ma'am, the writer, is the owner itself, and
“Excellent, Anak.” the critic is the one who judges."
“So, let us continue our discussion.”
“May I ask your ideas about the
difference between writer and critic at "Ma'am, it is the moment of truth." Meaning to
this juncture?” say, the writer is the one who knows everything
about the book, and the critic is the one who will
“Very Good” express what they feel is true about the
literature."
Any other else?
“Wow, that's different, and I like the
way you think differently, Anak. Keep
up the excellent work." “Ma'am, it is all about Argument, Analyze,
Compare and Evaluate.”
“So, thank you all for participating,
and now let's move to ‘Writing a “Ma'am, it is making an argument for a
critical paper.’” practical move.”
“What does it mean to be ‘critical’
when writing a critical paper?”
“Ok, that is correct. Aside from this,
any other answer class?”
“Very Good, class.”
“So that is what does it mean to be
critical when writing a critical paper.
We dispute, examine, compare,
evaluate for a practical move. Besides
this, we also have different steps in
writing a critical paper. Here are the
following: “None, Ma'am. We understand clearly up to
1. Outline this point.”
2. Introduction
3. Body
4. Conclusion”
“Any Question?”
“Okay, Great!!”
E. Generalization
“Ma’am, I have learned that this is all about
“ So that is our discussion about Literary
giving our own opinion to someone's
Criticism, and we will learn more about this in
literature work. It doesn't have any
real literature later on. But before that, I
boundaries; we may criticize independently

the way we want.”
lesson about literary criticism.”
"What have you learned about "Literary
Criticism?" “Ma'am, I have observed that writing a
critical paper has steps like writing an essay:
Introduction, Body and Conclusion.”
“You have a point. Very Good.”
“Okay Ma’am. Thank you.”
“What else, Class?”
“Today's topic is about "Remapping of
Philippine Literature through Criticism", but
“Exactly Anak, very good. And of we are learning about literary criticism, and
course, outline as well, do not forget that. there is no Philippines Literature in our
Ok?” discussion. So may I ask why Ma'am?”
“Any question Class?”
“Oh! An excellent observation you have,
Anak. My answer to your question is that we
will observe Philippines Literature after this
part. So, don't worry, but thank you so much
for asking. It shows you really pay attention to
the discussion and are willing to learn very
well. Keep up the good work!!”
F. Application
“Now, I can see that you are all aware of what
Literary Criticism is, what functions are
included in Literary Criticism, and the steps in
writing a critical paper. So, at this point, we
are about to read literature; let me introduce
you to the writer first.”
Dr. J. Neil Garcia
poet, literary and cultural critic
finished his BA Journalism (magna cum
“Okay, Ma’am.
laude) in the University of Santo
Tomas in 1990
currently teaching in UP Diliman
won Palanca and National Book Award
from the Manila Critics Circle
“Now, please read J. Neil Garcia’s ‘Revaluing
Value’ from pages 109-111 of your textbook.
(15minutes) Make sure you underline the
unknown words and look back later to
enhance your vocabulary.”
IV. Evaluation
So, time is up; I hope you have gained some knowledge from the literary piece you
have just read. So here I have some questions for you to answer, class. There is no
wrong answer; imagine like we are criticizing or analyzing in our opinion way to the
work of Dr J. Neil Garcia.
1. What is the main argument of the paper?
2. What fields are under the hard sciences? What fields are under the humanities?
What are the similarities and differences between the two fields?
3. How can you promote unity in the academe?
(Students will participate actively, if not, call on their names and help them find the
answer.)
